Portland Slates 'Doc' Severinsen For Rose Festival A great attraction has been added to the program for the Portland Rose Music Festival in the person of Carl "Doc" Sever Insen, native of Arlington, ack nowledged by many profession als as the finest jazz trumpeter playing today. Severinsen will perform on the Music Festival program with the support or a professional orches tra. as will Pat Boone, previous ly announced as host and guest artist. 'Doc was a recent visitor in Heppner as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Spaulding, long time friends. He will also ap pear again, at the Pendleton Round-up In September. Born In 1927, Severinsen was taught the trumpet by his father, htmstlf an excellent musician. At the age of nine, Severinsen won an Oregon state trumpet contest, and at 13, took first In the senior division of a regional contest After high school and Army service, he was featured with several top "name" bands, In cluding Charlie Bernet Sam Donahue, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. In 1949 he settled in New York City to free lance, and accepted his first steady assignment with Vaughn Monroe's "Camel Cara van." He soon became staff musician for NBC, working such shows as Kate Smith, Dinah Shore. Eddie Fisher and Sid Caeser, and was regularly feat urde on the original Steve Allen show and NBC "Bandstand," both as soloist and conductor. Presently on the "Tonight" show, he often solos on the trum pet, and Is assistant conductor to Skitch Henderson. The music festival will include Invited music groups from Pa. cific Northwest high schools, colleges and universities, as well as solo competition winners in six vocal and instrumental cat egories. Blue Mountain Sets Summer Session The 1964 Summer Session at Blue Mountain Community Col lege will begin Monday, June 22, and continue through August 14. Offerings will be limited to areas of representative enrollments. Classes have been set up to be presented evenings from 7:30 to 10 p.m. twice weekly. However, 4 credit courses will run from 7 to 10 p.m. with the exception of sciences which, with the nature of laboratory work, will necessitate 4 evenings each week from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Courses offered carry college transfer credit for students meet ing general admissions require ments. Students planning to en roll arc asked to either call the College Admissions office, 276 1291, or contact the office by mail and indicate courses in which they plan to enroll. If courses are desired that are not listed below, every effort will be made to present such courses if the demand is sufficient. Courses scheduled are: survey of English literature, English com position, fundamentals of speech, general psychology, general psy chology, art appreciation, per sonal health, beginning typing, elements of algebra (no credit), intermediate algebra, and gen eral biology. May 11 Marvin Dean Way, charged with exceeding daily bag limit of trout, fined $25 and costs. May 4 Aaron Craig, Jr., charged with dumping rubbish on public highway, fined $25 and given seven days to remove refuse. Busy Beavers Busy On May 19, the Busy Beav ers sewing club was called to order by the president, Cathy Cannon. The roll call was given with four present. Minutes were read and approved. We Iinished our first Droiect which was a shears case. We made "get well" cards to send to friends in the hospital. Our leader, Mrs. Lou Crum, served nice refreshments. On May 23 we had a picnic lunch in the city park. All mem bers were present and had fun playing games. Our next meet ing will be June 2 at Carol Haus ler's.
