HEPPNER GAZETTE -TIMES, Thursday. May 21, 1964 one news Rainbow Assembly No. 89 will hold Dublic installation on Sun day afternoon, May 24, at 2:00 p.m. Karen Hams was electee. Worthy Advisor at the Assembly meeting last Tuesday evening. Other officers elected were Elaine Gaarsland, associate ad visor; Bonnie Hynd, charity; Mary Nichols, hope, and Shirley Hicks, faith. The girls are mak ing preparations for attending Grand Assembly at Corvallis on June 21 through 23. They will have nearly 600 hours of service to their community to report. The girls plan to earn part of their expenses for Grand As sembly so anyone with work for any girls to do is asked to can Karen Hams or Susan Lindstrom. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Proudfoot, Sr., of Portland were week-end guests of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Proud foot. While here both families attended open house at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Proudfoot, Jr., on Butter Creek Sunday honoring their 25th wedding anniversary. Auction Ticket Sale Underway Plans for the church auction on June 6 are developing rapidly. Anyone with services or articles to donate are asked to contact Lindsay Kincaid or Bristow's Market for listing in advertising. Mrs. Bill Rietmann is chairman of the ticket sale and would like to inform the church school members that there will be a contest among the students to see who can sell the most tickets. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners for boys and first, second, and third place winners for girls. Tickets may be obtained at her home or at church on Sunday morning. Frank Jepscn of Walla Walla spent the week-end visiting rel atives here. He was a guest at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mary Holtz. Locust OES Elects Officers Election was held at Locust Chapter No. 119, Order of Eastern Star, on Tuesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen being re-elected as worthy mat ron and worthy patron for the ensuing year. Mr. and Mrs. Charles O'Connor were elected associate patron and matron. Mrs. Omar Rietmann was chosen secretary, with Roy W. Lind strom as treasurer. Mrs. James Lindsay and Mrs. Herbert Ek strom Sr. were elected conduc tress and associate conductress, respectively. Installation of elec ted and appointive officers will be held in June. The Chapter es pecially honored Melvin Melena, who is moving to Haines soon. He was presented a gift from the Rainbow Girls by Karen Hams, worthy advisor-elect, as a thank-you for having served on the Rainbow advisory board. Mr. Melena received a gift from Locust Chapter, and a Masonic Bible from AF&AM Lodge No. 120, which was presented by Charles O'Connor. Serving on the social committee for the even ing were Mrs. E. R. Lundell, Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom, Jr., and Mrs. Walter Jacobs. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jepsen were hosts for a party for her Church School class on Satur day evening at their home. The children learned bowling rules, form, and etiquette. They also took tests over the semester's work on "Jesus of Nazareth." Brock Linnell made the best score and Ricky Boyce was sec ond for the boys. Kristin Nelson scored highest for the girls and Susan Jane Jepsen was second. Besides members of the class, Mrs. Walter Jacobs and Mrs. Pete Cannon were present. Re freshments were served the group before going home. On Sunday all the students of the class, who had attended at least three Sundays of every month in the semester, attended church services together and then left afterwards for Pendle ton, where they had a picnic in the park and then went bowling. Those going were Ricky Boyce, Brock Linnell, Carl Smouse, Kathv Holtz. Susan Jane Jep sen. Kristin Nelson, Christine McCabe, Bob Benson, Terry Can non, Melvin Gaarsiand, Tanya Tucker, and Barbara Boyce. Mrs. Mary Holtz, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Boyee and Jim, Mr. Don Linnell and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jepsen and Bill, accompanied the class. Unable to attend were Rick Har riett, Greg Jacobs, and Jane Krcbs. Sewing Club Works On Wool Articles The "Teen Seamers" 4-H sew ing club met May 16 at the Al fred Nelson home. Our leader, Mrs. Keith Rea, looked over our wool practice articles and helped us with many problems we might have encountered. She also demonstrated making but tonholes and different hems In various materials. By our next meeting we are to have our ex hibit patterns fitted and layed out on the material. Our next meeting will be held at the Bryce Keene home on June 11. A motion was made, seconded, and carried that the County adopt a group life Insurance plan for County employees. A motion was made, seconded. and carried that the Lexington Airport residence be insured for $8,000.00. A motion was made, seconded, and carried that the County pay Elmer and Bob Lyons for re moving trees from the County road right-of-way in Boardman. The Court unanimously agreed to boost the further development of Highway 74 in the present lo cation to the Heppner Junction. Alloys 1.130.00 Monument Class To Graduate May 25 By MARTHA MATTESON MONUMENT Monument High school had its Junior-Senior banquet and prom on Saturday evening, May 16. Graduation ex ercises will be held Monday, May 25, at 8:00 p.m. at the gym nasium. A farewell party was held in the Legion-Grange hall Friday evening, May 8, for the families of the Harold Corks and the Henry Cuppers, who have sold their ranches here. The Corks will make their home in Bend and the Cuppers are moving to La Grande, Mrs. Clara Flower, the first and second grade teacher, had her annual Mother's Day party for her two classes on Friday afternoon, May 8. There were 14 mothers and grandmothers present. Each year she has a house plant for each child to give their mother as a Mother's Day gift. After a program she served Kool-Aid, cookies and ice cream. Donald Capon celebrated his 18th birthday Wednesday, May 6. High school students were in vited to a hay ride and wiener roast, ending with a record hop at the Legion hall. He was named Kenneth Duane and weighed 6 lbs., &Vi oz. The mother is the daughter of Mr. and Mxs. Everett Wheeler of Kimberly, known here in school as Julia Ann. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Epley, now of Pendleton, are the new par ents of James Bruce Epley II, born April 28, weighing 5 lbs., 15 oz. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Epley of La Grande and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stirwalt of Kimberly. Mrs. Epley was the former Diana Stirwalt. Brothers and families from Gold Beach who have bought the Harold Cork ranches are Mr. and Mrs. Earl Miller and 13-year-old daughter, Niki, and Mr. and Mrs. Warren Miller. Word was received May 9 that the father of Mrs. Pearl Martin had passed away Friday night in Salem. Mrs. Martin was there with the family. Saturday morning, May 9, about seven cars loaded with boys, girls and teachers from La Grande, under leadership of Joe Batty, came through on their way to the fossil beds. While stopped here, several went over to Milt Morgans and talked about rocks. Bruce Ward of John Day spent Saturday here with his father, Swede Ward, who is re modeling Red Foster's new office building. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lewis and four children returned Saturday after spending two weeks in California visiting his relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Fleming arrived Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stella Mc carty. Sunday they visited in the homes of Harold Reynolds, Darrel Dulanney and Elmer Matteson. Mr. Fleming left Mon day for his home at Jackson ville, but Mrs. Fleming stayed to visit friends and relatives for two weeks. She was known as Mrs. Josephine Schruam before her marriage to Mr. Fleming. Mrs. Dorothy Page of Milton Freewater visited at the Elmer Matteson home on Mother's Day. Pete Gilman and Lon Merrell returned Wednesday after at tending funeral services for Mrs. Pete (Myrtle) Gilman In Hepp ner on Tuesday. She died Satur day morning, May 9, in her home while eating breakfast. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Johnson of Bend have purchased the Henry Cupper ranch. The Cuppers are moving to La Grande where they have purchased. 'The Moon Motel." Roy Crane of Novato, Calif., is visiting his daughter, Mrs. Bud Johnson on the Cupper ranch. Janice Cork and Reta Cupper accompanied Wayne Leathers to Bend where they visited Harold Cork in their new home. Edna Moore accompanied them to Prineville where she spent the day with her daughter, Mrs. Roy Cork, Jr., and family. Mr. Leath ers met his wife at the bus de pot in Bend on her return trip from Chico, Calif., where she had visited their daughter and family, the Al Gates, and also her son Buzzy who attends Chico State College. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Durbin and children of Prineville spent Sun day here visiting her mother, Mrs. Reeta Hinton. Mrs. Page Dulanney and also Sammy Howell were both in the John Day hospital with mumps the past week. Mrs. Frieda Wheeler who spent 10 days visiting here returned Monday to her home and work in Pendleton. Friends gathered at the Legion-Grange hall Friday even ing ioi a farewell party for the Cuppers and Corks. A nice mir ror was given each family as a farewell gift.
