HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday, April 16, 1964 Know Your Candidates 4 , I f BERL AKERS 1 Berl Akers Republican Candidate For Morrow County Judge We live in an era of Group Power and we must work with these groups. This is a good sit uation if we have the leader ship to unite their efforts and plan for the future growth and development of Morrow county. We must also recognize that there will always be individuals with problems and constructive criticism. This problem and the rights of the minority must al ways be protected. The Republican Party realized this obligation to the people of Morrow county when the late Russell Miller of Boardman was nominated and elected as Coun ty Commissioner almost 20 years ago without opposition. There will be no problems that we cannot solve if we unite for the good of all and keep the lines of communication open between the public and the County Court. This can be done by contact with groups, individuals, and through newspaper reports. We cannot stand still for it is certain that if we do we will lose the battle of progress. Thero is no better example of what can be done than the develop ment of the Boardman and Irrl gon areas. They have an un limited potential because of their cheap power, cheap freight, and nn abundance of water. It is to the best interest of all to give them every assistance at our dis posal. Berl Akers Is a native of Mor row county. He attended grade and high school in lone, grad uating from high school in 1934. In 193G he married Margaret Kly, and ever since they have lived on the ranch originally homesteaded by his father, R. M. Akers. They have three children, Berl, Jr., who works on a ranch near lone; Robert, a senior at Oregon State University; Wil liam, a freshman at Lewis and Clark College; anil Bonnie, who is in the seventh grade at lone. Akers served eleven years on the lone school board, and for sev eral years was Scoutmaster of the lone Boy Scout troop. Ho is a member of the lone Commun ity Church, the lone Masonic Lodge, the Willows Grange, a life member of the Oregon Wheat League, a life member of the Oregon State University Dads' Club, and is now serving as Morrow County P o m o n a Grange Master. I s a FRANK HAMLIN Frank Hamlin Democratic Candidate For Morrow County Judge If elected judge of Morrow county I promise to promote our resources with strict attention to county problems. I think we ere on the verge of great develop ment in the county and 1 would like to take part in that future. Having worked with the pub lic most of my life I feel qual ified for this position. I realize the problems of a county judge are not always easy to solve and take a person who has dealt with the public for many years. I have been a businessman most of my life. I feel many of the problems which would face me as judge would be similar to those any business man is called on to solve. Though I realize it is impossible to do exactly what each person wants, because we all see problems differently, I would make it an important part of my job to work for the betterment of everyone and to get this county to pulling to gether for the good of all. With this in mind I would give full cooperation to the county school district, the road department, welfare and hospital, and the governments of the cities of Morrow. My background, as I have said, consists mostly of the bus iness world. I am a native of the state, have been a resident 56 years and was educated in Gresham public schools. During World War I, I served overseas two years with the Army Engin eers, and returned to service with the same branch for two and one-half years during World War II. I owned and operated a garage in Gresham between the wars, had the Allis-Chalmers dealership at Redmond for sev eral years before moving to Heppner in 1950. I operated A Ikons Sport Shop for seven years, before becoming manager of Barratt Sales, which I later purchased. I recently sold that business and would have full time to devote to the duties of my office. I am a member of the Amer ican Legion, Elks, Masonic Lodge, IOO F. I served as com mander of the American Legion post at Gresham three terms, on the city council two terms, and 15 years on the volunteer fire de partment. My association with the people of Morrow county and adjacent counties has been a pleasant and gratifying experience. My wife and I built a home in Heppner five years ago because we felt this is the place we want to re main. We want to be a part of the opportunities that lie ahead for us all in this county. Rugglcs Insurance Agency Heppner Phone 676-9625 Lloyd Berger Democratic Candidate For Port Commissioner A democrat who has filed for a position on the Morrow Coun ty Port Commission is Lloyd Berger of Irrigon. Mr. and Mrs. Berger have made their home in Irrigon for the past 17 years, coming here from Portland. Their two children, Judy and Ronnie, were educated in the Irrigon school system, During the years Mr. Berger has lived in the community he has served on the local fire dis rtict, is a chapter member of the Irrigon Grange, has organized the Irrigon Cemetery District and is its chairman. He was appointed by Governor Elmo Smith to serve on the County Welfare Board in Morrow county and has worked on that for several years. He is a member of the Lion's Club which was recently organ ized in Irrigon. Mr. Berger is employed by West Extension Irrigation Dis trict in the capacity of ditch rider and has been in their em ploy for about 15 years. Mr. Berger is a well Informed, civic minded and energetic cit izenalways willing to lend a hand to any worthwhile pro ject that will help to make his community a better place in which to live, and gives freely of his time and talents when ever he can be of service. His neighbors know him to be a forthright man of his convic tions and a truly good neighbor. After giving thoughtful con sideration to the pleas of his various neighbors to become a candidate he has agreed as he feels that Irrigon should have some representation on the Port Commission. ENVMiK roc tiki -K-o-ttk CUSIMCSS NMD GAZETTE-TIMES HHS Cindermen Garner Trophy At Saturday Meet Heppner High school thin clads really brought home the bacon actually, the brass Sat urday as they journeyed to Ar lington and won the Arlington Invitational track meet. This is the third time the Mustangs won the affair during its four-year history and thus the local crew walked off with permanent pos ession of the trophy which is awarded annually at the meet. Heppner garnered 57 points to 37 for runncr-up Umatilla. Two other Morrow county clubs, Ione's Cardinals and Riv erside's Pirates, were entered in the meet. The Bucs gathered 20 23 points and the Cardinals copped 11. Lee Padberg captured wins in the mile and the 880 to lead the Mustangs to their victory. In the only one-two finish of the afternoon for the Heppner ites, John Wagenblast followed Padberg to the tape to capture sceond place in the mile event. The Mustangs' other first place finish in the meet came in the mile relay where they churned the cinders for a 4:10.9 clocking. In other events, Myers of Con don heaved the discus 120' 10" to win that event. Benson, Uma tilla, tossed the shot-put 44 5" and Barnett of Condon chucked the javelim 148' 10" to win in their respective fields. Tom Heimbigner, lone, pick ed up the Cards' only first place finish of the day when he clear ed 11' to win the pole vault. Obermeier of Riverside high captured a first-place finish for his school in the two-mile run, winning with a time of 11:37.3. Other times: broad jump, Wil liams, Echo, 18'; 120 yd. high hurdles, Boor, Arlington, :18; 100 yd. dash, Anderson and Eis ele, both Umatilla, :10.6; 440, Furniss, Echo, :58.9; 180 yd. low hurdles, Boor, Arlington :22.3; 220 yd. dash, Williams, Echo, :26.4; high jump, Porter, Helix, 5' 6"; and 880 yd. relay, Arling ton, 1:46.2.
