HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES. Services Friday For J. Hughes, 77 Funeral services for Joseph James Hughes, age 77, will be held Friday, March 27, at 10:00 a.m. at tne first cnrisuun church, Heppner. The Rev. Charles Knox will officiate, with inteTment in the Heppner ma sonic cemetery. Mr. Hughes, who had been in in health fnr some time, died Tuesday, March 24, at Pioneer Memorial hospital, ne naa mauu ui in nr near Hennner all 1113 IIUHIV. The son of pioneer parents, John and Mary Hughes, he was born on a ranch in the Lexing ton area on May 28, 1886. On June 17, 1923, he was married to Olive Bassett in Newberg. He was a member of the First Christian church, and had served as a deacon for over 20 years. Survivors include his widow, Olive; three sons, Thomas J. of Heppner; Joseph J., Jr. of Los undine Calif and William B. of McMinnville; two daughters, Mrs. Ellen Marshall of Sweet Home, and Mary Olive Hughes of Salem, and ten grandchildren. Also three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hoaly of Heppner, Mrs. Anna McNamoe of Heppner, and Mrs. Nora Buffington of Portland, be sides a number of nieces and nephews. Final Rites Held At Masonic Cemetery For Florence Hughes Memorial services for Florence May Hughes, 81, were held March 19 at Smith-Callaway Chapel in The Dalles, wilh the Rev. E. Ernest Taylor officiating. Graveside committal rites at the Heppner Masonic cemetery were conducted by Ruth Chapter 32, Order of Eastern Star, Heppner. Mrs. Hughes died at her home home on route 2, The Dalles, on Monday, March 1G, following a sudden illness. She was born April 24, 1882, at Pembina, N. 1)., and resided many years in Heppner, where she was a member of the Epis copal church, Sans Souci Rebek ah Lodge 33, and Ruth Chapter, OES. Her husband, Hansen, died in 1943. Surviving are one brother, Harry C. (Brick) Hoffman, and a sister, Mrs. Henry Peterson, bolh of The Dalles. Pallbearers were John Wight man, Paul Jones, Howard Bryant, Frank Parker, Harold Bucket and Oliver Creswiek, all of Heppner. New Pharmacist On Humphreys Staff Tat Lamothe, formerly of La Grande, has joined the staff at Humphreys Rexall Drug as pharmacist, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Murray, owners, announce. La mothe formerly was pharmacist for Graham Drug in La Grande and has also held similar posit ions in Buhl and Boise, Idaho. Originally from Pocatello, Ida., Lamothe received Ills pharmacy degree in that state. He and Mrs. Lamothe have throe children, including two sons, 17 and 9 years of age, and a daughter, 14. The family ex pects to move hero after the end of the school year. This week Lamothe has been working part time at Murray's Condon Pharmacy while Clay (Ed) Espy, pharmacist there, is on vacation, The Espy family Is on a trip to California. NEW! HOWELL John Day Judge Seeks Election To Supreme Court It has been more than a half- century since an Eastern Oregon judge has won a seat on the Oregon Supreme Coure bench by election, but this year could break the long drought. One of the candidates for elec tion to Supreme Court Position No. 7, from which Justice George Rossman will retire in January, is Circuit Court Judge Edward H. Howell of John Day. Judge Howell is one of four candidates for election to the position. Two of his opponents in the race are also circuit judges, William S. Fort of Eug onei and Ralph M. Holman of Oregon City. The other is Jason Lee of Salem, who is without judicial experience. Of the three judges, Howell is senior in length of service on the circuit court bench and is probably the most traveled with in the state. A native Oregonian and a graduate of Willamette Univer sity Law School, Howell was ad mitted to the Oregon bar in 1940. After only five years in private practice of law and four years in the U. S. Army Air Corps dur ing World War II, he was ap pointed to fill a circuit court va cancy in the 11th Judicial Dis trict in 1949, with the backing of his colleagues in the district. He was elected to the position in 1950, 1930 and 1962. Because his own judicial dis trict is thinly populated though widespread and his caseload relatively light, Judge Howell has frequently been assigned by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to assist in other districts. As a result, he has heard a wide variety of cases, civil and crim inal, in more than two-thirds of Oregon s 3b counties, In all sec tions of the state.. Consequently be has had an opportunity to become widely known, especially in legal circles. Like Judge Hol man, Howell has been a pro-tem Supreme Court Justice, serving in that capacity tor an extended period in I960 and 19G1 to assist in clearing a backlog of high has been honored by his follow court cases. Like frort, Howell circuit judges by election to the presidency of the Oregon Circuit Judges Association. Howell has also been a member of the exec utive committee of the Oregon Judicial Council, which includes all Supreme Court Justiceses and Circuit Judges. The club members have been invited to a wiener roast by the Black Horse livestock club at Ber nard Doherty's home April 19. Each club will have a short meeting after eating. The next meeting of the Busy Needles Knitting club was held March 11 at Mrs. Spohn's home. We worked on our caps and some had them almost done.
