HEPPNER GAZETTE SKI TRAILS By BIRDINE TULLIS The excellent snow conditions of last week-end brought a large number of skiers, both expert and beginners, to Arbuckle. The road condition was good, but once again a warning to carry chains at all times when coming up the mountain! The area is being operated on a host family plan this year. Host families for Saturday were Barb and Orville Cutsforth, Don and Martha Peter son. Arnold Melby family and Ken Peck family were on duty Sunday. Barb's hospitality in cluded supplying a huge delic ious pot of chili more than enough to feed all the hungry skiers. The usual procedure is to carry your sack lunch. Coffee is always available in the hut. Last week new directors elec ted in the ski club were men tioned. The complete list of di rectors should include Arnold Melby, our very able and active president; Alice Vance, secre tary; Garry Tullis, vice presi dent, and Don Peterson, past president. Chuck McLean is the Forest Service representative for the area. These and the other directors and ski club members bear the responsibility and con duct the business necessary in maintaining the area for the en joyment of anyone interested in skiing. At this time family member ships are available to the pub lic. For a $35.00 paid yearly dues, all members of a family can ski the remainder of this season without paying daily tow fees. Membership with the same priv ilege is available to a single person for $20.00. The daily tow fee is $1.50 per person. Any one interested in this plan should contact Arnold or Alice. The club is always happy to welcome new members. Sunday, January 19, the area will have as guest Marvin New by, Section Chief of the Nat ional Ski Patrol. He will be here to check out our ski patrol and visit with any one interested In Ski Patrol work. All members of Arbuckle Ski Patrol should try to be present for this visit. A good ski patrol is vital to the safety of all at the area. Apparently Arbuckle received a mention in a popular maga zine recently. Tom and Nancy Pryer and family of Kennewick, Wn., arrived at the area last Saturday, saying they had read of Arbuckle in Sunset magazine. The many surprised club mem bers were happy to welcome them to the area, and they seem ed to enjoy their visit. The lone "B" team took the Heppncr "B" lads, 53 to 35, but the Pony "A'' string won over the lone "A" five, 36-25. In the "B" game, the lone team was outscored in only the third quarter and led midway, 24-12. In the second half the Heppner boys tried to come back, but the Cards caught fire with a 29-polnt second half. The loss left the Ponies' "B" team with an 0-2 record. The Heppner "A" team, which narrowly beat the lone boys, 43 42, a month ago, came out fight ing to achieve the 36-25 victory. They opened up with a fast break and led at the rest time, 28-11. The Cardinals were not finished, though, and brought the final score down to 11 points. The Ponies' "A" team record now stands at 2-1 with both wins over lone and a loss to Irrigon. In jamboree play the Ponies have a 1-2 record. Next game for the Heppner junior high fives will be at Con don on Saturday, January 18.
