Wahtonka Tough But Mustangs Win By GREG PIERCE Heppner's Mustangs found the going rough in their first league basketball game but slipped by wamonKa High of Chenowith (The Dalles) in the small gym of the league's latest entrant Friday night, 49-45. Ken Wright, hoop ace for the Mustangs, found the net and dropped in 20 points to lead the Horsemen to their seventh vic tory in eight starts. Lee Padberg, off his usual form, was second for the Mustangs, scoring with 13. Coach Bob Cantonwine used eight players, and seven were in long enough to penetrate the strong Eagles' defense to score. In the first quarter the Mus tangs took the lead at 16-11, and in the second stanza they pulled to a relaxing 10-point lead, 26 16, at intermission. But in the third quarter they saw the lead dwindle to four points, 39-35. The game became wild in the fourth period, but each team con nected for 10 points and the Mustangs took their slim victory. Areas are enjoy ing the most bountiful snowfall received in several seasons. More and more local people are head ing for the slopes. There was a large crowd of people at Ar buckle last week-end. The area was open week-ends and some days of the Christmas holiday. Club members enjoyed a pot luck and some very icy skiing at Arbuckle on New Year's Day. Others took advantage of the school holiday to visit some of their favorite places farther from home. Those visiting Spout Springs were the Don Peterson family, Bob Rietmann family, Norm Nelson family, Art Vance family, Garry Tullis family and Frank Halvorsen. We had a won derful time, and the kids, es pecially, enjoyed the night ski ing each evening. Susan and Stephen Lindstrom enjoyed a trip to Timberline. The snow condition at Ar buckle last week-end was excel lent and from all indications more snow has fallen since then. Spout Springs received several inches of snow over the week end as did Timberline, Anthony Lakes and Government Camp. Looks like a good season for skiers ! Another item of good news for skiers in need of equipment is that this is the time of year when most sport stores start their sales of ski clothing and equipment. The wise skier will be watching for news of such sales. Actually the basic items of skiing change very little from season to season. A good pair of stretch pants and parka should last for several seasons. I find it very interesting that this year the manufacturers of ski cloth ing have put more emphasis on style in children's clothing. The little skiers are iust as style con scious as their elders. The racing stripes in ski pants and on par kas seem to be the big item the younger generation liked. At a recent meeting of the Ski Club several new directors were elected. Orville Cutstortn was elected Area Development director; Art Vance, Ski Patrol director, and Ken Peck as Rec reation and Ski Director. The Ski Patrol is in charge of all safety at the area and an ade quate ski patrol is always on duty to take care of first aid needs. The Ski Patrol is on the sloDe for the safety of all skiers, .just as the policeman is on the streets. Their requests snoum De followed. Steven Peck is planning a course 01 ski instruction at ar buckle. No one can learn to ski by reading a book and then eoine out to the nearest slope to practice what he has read. Lessons in skiing by a qualified instructor not only increase en iovment of the sport, but de crease the chances of being in jured. Any one interested in les sons should contact Steven or check at the Ski Shop for fur ther information. 5&j 4-door custom, white, 6 cyl.
