" "1 Judy Sherer is Princess For Pacific International By KATHERINE LINDSTROM IONE Miss Judy Sherer was chosen as the Morrow county representative to compete for Miss PIP (Pacific International Parade) at a contest held at the Alpenrose Dairy in Portland on Saturday. Dressed In western at tire, girls from 14 counties took part. They were judged on their 4-H background and an extem poraneous speech they were re quired to make. Miss Judi Elliott of Polk county was chosen Miss PIP and Judy was chosen as one of her eight princesses. They will ride in the P. I. Parade on Saturday, October 12, in Portland and will have the pleasure of presenting the trophies and ribbons to the winners at the P. I. Show. Judy, lone High school sen ior, is a member of the lone 4-H saddlehorse club, "The Trail Dusters." She was selected for the PIP honor by the county 4-H agent and committee. The contest was sponsored by the Portland Jaycees and was staged against the setting of a small frontier town. The girls, attired in western clothing, were escorted there in stagecoaches and surreys. They were filmed for television over channel 8 and interviewed by the press. They talked on "My Most Memorable Experience in 4-H. The court will lead the P.I parade Saturday, October 12, and presnt the trophies to the P. I. winners during the follow ing week. Judy and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sherer, along with tne otner contestants were, en tertained at a dinner in their honor on Saturday evening. Mrs. Elmer Griffith is spend ing some time visiting her niece, Miss Grace Cunningham, at Post Falls, Idaho. High school students and fac ulty enjoyed a Sadie Hawkins Day dance at the school cafe torium on Friday evening. The affair was sponsored by the Lettermen's club with Dick Strait as their advisor. Tom Bristow of Portland has informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bristow, of his en rollment in Portland Community college. He will take an eleven week course in communications. Social Club Elects Officers Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen was hostess for the Eastern Star soc ial club on Wednesday after noon at her home. Plans were made to have a traveling food sale on Wednesday, October 30. Officers elected for the coming year were Mrs. James Barnett, president; Mrs. Eulenna Corley, vice-president; and Mrs. James Lindsay, secretary. Four teen members were present. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn Jr. were hosts for a "Come As You Are" party on Saturday evening. The following guests enjoyed pinochle: Mr. and Mrs. Larry Fetsch of Heppner, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Devin, and Mr. and Mrs. Vern Viall of Lexing ton; Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Cal houn of Milton-Freewater, and Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sherer, Mr. NOTICE! Lindsay Kincaid was awarded a prize for most ' un usual" costume. Rietmanns Observe Anniversary Mrs. Dean Rhode of Kenne wick, Wn has been visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Rietmann, Mrs. Rietmann met her in Hermiston on Wednesday. Her husband joined her here on Saturday and they returned home Sunday. Other guests at the Rietmann home on Sunday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rietmann and family and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rietmann and family, who came to help their parents cele brate their 38th wedding anni versary. Danny Akers, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Akers, underwent ma jor surgery on Wednesday at Doernbecker hospital. He is re ported in satisfactory condition, but very homesick and would welcome mail from his friends here. The address is Doernbecker Hospital, Childrens Ward, Port land, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn Sr. spent Saturday and Sunday in Portland. Twelve couples from the danc ing class sponsored by the Lions club, met at the Legion Hall Saturday night for a danc ing party. Refreshments were served by hosts, Mr. and Mrs. James Barnett, Mr. and Mrs. Gar Swanson, Mr. and Mrs. David Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom. Gene Harryman, administra tive principal at lone High school attended an Oregon Prin cipal's Association meeting in Corvallis on Monday and Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lun dell and Cheryl spent the week end in Portland attending to business and shopping. - Those attending the evang on Sunday afternoon at the elism workshop at The Dalles Congregational church were Rev. and Mrs. Walter Crowell, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse, Fredrick Martin, and Don Bristow, chair man of the board of deacons. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Morgan and Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Morrison and Merrie Jo spent the week end in Portland and attended the OSU-Baylor game. Geral dine Morgan and Cheryl and Michelle Morrison of Oregon State met their parents in Port land. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Mat thews and Berniece and Deniece and Virgil Morgan and Jerry Stefani drove to Portland on Saturday and attended the foot ball game, coming home on Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Berl Akers and Bonnie were week-end visitors in Portland. Guests Saturday night and Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Lindstrom and fam ily were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dorr Mason and sons, and her sisters, Judy Mason of Pico Rivera, Calif., and Mrs. Richard Rea and daughters of Portland. Mrs. S. E. Ransdell of Port land is a guest at the home of her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nelson Jr. She rode up with Mr. and Mrs. Al fred Nelson, Sr. of Oak Grove, who came to attend the Bert Mason rites on Saturday. Other guests of the Nelsons and the Norman Nelson family were Mr. and Mrs. Bertell Mason, Jr. and family, who were here for the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. James Lindsay have returned from a ten day visit with his mother, Mrs. Ida King, who has been quite ill at her home in Silverton. Mrs. Henry Wright of Payette, Idaho is a guest at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Kincaid and baby daughter. Mrs. Adon Hamlett and fam ily of Fruitland, Idaho arrived on Saturday evening for a few days visit at the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Swanson. Monday afternoon Mrs, Hamlett entertained a group of friends at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Gar Swanson, with a jewel ry party. Mrs. Bert Mason, Sr. spen)t Saturday night as a guest of Mrs. James Lindsay. Attend District Rainbow Meet Rainbow girls of lone Assem bly No. 89 attended a district meeting with Ruth Assembly in Heppner on Thursday evening. Special guests were Miss Sandra Beck of Junction City, Grand Worthy Advisor, and Mrs. Charles Graham, Grand Deputy of International Order of Rain bow for Girls in Oregon. Lee O'Connor, Worthy Advisor, Su san Lindstrom, Elaine Gaars land, Bonnie Hynd, Mrs. E. R. Schaffer and Mrs. Roy W. Lind strom attended a dinner at the Wagon Wheel given in Sandra's honor, preceding the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mason lert on Monday for their home in Prineville after a ten day visit here with his sisters, Mrs. Clara Kincaid and Mrs. M. E. Cotter Mrs. Sam McMillan of Port land and her aunt drove to lone on Saturday to attend the Ma son services. They also visited Mrs. McMillan's mother. Bill Eubanks and a friend from Portland spent the week-end hunting at the mountain cabin of Mr. and Mrs. John Eubanks. Mrs. Gordon White of Port land and her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Weih ling of Seattle, were visting Mr. White and other relatives over the week-end. Church Holds Dedication Dedication services were held Sunday morning during services at the United Church of Christ for the Board of Education. The group includes Mrs. F. T. Martin, chairman, Mrs. Jack Barak, Mrs. Lindsay Kincaid, Mrs. Norman Nelson, and Rev. Walter Crowell; church school superintends Mrs. Norman Nelson; Mrs. F. T. Mar tin, assistant superintendent; Mrs. Walter Roberts, primary superintendent; Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, secretary; and the other classroom teachers. Betty Hausler and Terry O'Con nor were hostesses on Friday evening for a party at the Haus ler home honoring Janice Snider on her fourteenth birthday. The seventh and eighth grade guests enjoyed dancing and games fol lowed by punch, popcorn and snacks. Auxiliary Plans Food Sale Legion Auxiliary met at the hall on Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Eulena Corley as hostess. A traveling food sale was plan ned for Saturday morning, Oc tober 12 at ten o'clock. Mem bers are reminded to bring gifts for the Veteran's Gift Shop by the November 5 meeting. Topic Club will hold their Oc tober meeting Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Charles Carlson. The lone Grade School foot ball team played Irrigon on the home field Thursday afternoon and won by a score of 6-0. Janice Snider, Betty Hausler, and Terry O'Connor are the grade school yell leaders. Bill Salter of Forest Grove drove to lone this week-end, ac companied by two friends, Dick West and Roger Jensen of Port land. They visited Bill's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Salter, and; went deer hunting. Committal services were conducted by . Heppner Elks Lodge No. 358 with lain, Clint Agee; Est. Leading Knight, Darrell Padberg; Est. Loyal Knight, Claude Graham; Est. Lecturing Knight, Jerry Daggett taking part. Out of town relatives attend ing were Mrs. Mason, Mr. and Mrs. Dorr Mason and sons, John and Gerry, and Mrs. Richard Rea (Alice Mason) and daught ers of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Ber tell Mason Jr. and Frieda and Chris of Oak Grove, Miss Judy Mason of Pico Rivera, Calif., and Mrs. Mason's niece, Mrs. Velma Stillwell and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Dezell and Dora Lee and Phyllis of Spokane, Wn. and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mason of Prineville. . Faculty members were also entertained at a tea at the library, when members of the library board acted as hostess, Mrs. Roland Bishop is the li brarian and the library is open on Monday and Thurs day afternoons from 2:30 to 4:30. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rice re turned on Tuesday from a visit in Sacramento, Calif, with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Martin. Room Mothers Named PTA room mothers, who have been appointed for the 1963 1964 year are as follows: First grade, Mrs. Lee Palmer; second, Mrs. Bill Rietmann; third, Mrs. Robert Rietmann; fourth, Mrs. Henry Krebs; fifth, Mrs. Don Linnell; sixth, Mrs. Robert Jep sen; seventh, Mrs. Fred Nelson; and eighth, Mrs. Harold Snider. High school room representatives are Mrs. Joe Hausler for the freshmen; Mrs. Robert David son, sophomores; Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen and Mrs. Raymond Lundell for the juniors and Mr3. Ray Heimbigner for the seniors. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Herrick spent the week-end at Lewis ton, Idaho visiting her mother. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Thome spent Sunday at Pasco visting her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Fox. Mr3. Fox is recovering from recent surgery. mm all Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hutchins had as hunting guests the past week, his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Prather of Turner. They left for their home on Sunday. Rhea Creek Club Elects New Officers The Rhea Creek Livestock club was called to order by Dale Van Blokiand Sunday, October 6, at the Rhea Creek Grange hall. We got our record books back and talked of how to improve them. We elected officers for the coming year. They are Bob Har ris, president; Tom Rawlins, vice president; David, secretary; John Harris, news reporter, and Terry Corbin, sergeant-at-arms. We have three new members. They are Steven and Scott Mc Daniel and Diana Wright After the meeting was adjourned, re freshments were served by Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Van Blokiand.
