August 22, 1963 JVlaranatho Club Outlines Plans For Fall Events By CATHERINE LINDSTROM IONE Maranatha club of lone Community church met Wednes day, August 12, at the church with Mrs. Walter Crowell, Mrs. E. M. Baker, and Mrs. Kenneth Smouse as co-hostesses. Mrs. W. C. Crawford's theme for devot ions was "As the Day Begins," with scripture text from Psalm 118. The club changed its by-laws to read that the "Maranathas will meet on the second Thurs day of each month, hereafter" instead of on Wednesday. A holiday bread sale is being planned for early fall and a Christmas luncheon for the Wo men's Fellowship on December 12. The new year books were given out, complete with committees, hostesses, programs, and devo tional leaders. A new feature is a 20-year history, in brief, of the Maranatha club, from its inception to the present. Mrs, E. M. Baker was thanked for her effort in preparing the ar ticle. The next meeting will be Thursday, September 12, at the Marion Palmer home with Mrs, Mary Swanson as devotional leader. Mr. and Mrs. David Rietmann anu Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Bris tow left on Wednesday for Alaska. Grand Conductress Visits Mrs. Marjorie Jones, Associate Grand Conductress of the Grand Chapter of Oregon, made an of ficial visit to Locust Chapter No. 119, Order of the Eastern Star, on Friday afternoon. She was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, Worthy Matron and Patron, while in lone. Len Darst, Jim Baker, and Leo Perdoon left Thursday after spending some time here work ing in Gooseberry. Baker lives in Portland and the other two Doys make their home in Auburn, Wn. Mrs. Glendora Smith, U. S. Relatives Attend Family Reunion By NANCY TILLEY SrRAY A family reunion of 51 people was held August 17 and 18 by the relatives of Mrs. Venie Anderson of Spray. Those present were Mrs. Venie Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Britt, Ruth and Brenda Keller. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Sinclair and family, Mr. and Mrs. LcRoy Britt and family and Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Britt all of Spray. Also Mrs. Bernice Irwin from New Jersey; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Welds, The Dalles, (heir daugh ter Jackie Pearsall and family from Connecticut: Mr. and Mrs. George Hannon and family, their (laughter Mrs. W. M. Shipley and family from Brookings; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gitchell: Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Brht and family all of Port land; Mrs. Shirley Peterson and family, Mrs. Beverly Lei tnkrr and family, friends of the Petersons, from Ilurlong, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Simpson from Pendleton; and Mrs. Rene fisher from Ml. A graduation party was held at the home of Bob Ashmeads for Corky Ashmead. Many of his friends attended and enjoyed tho evening. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Thompson were week-end visitors at the Bob Ashmead home. Mrs. Tisha Koimlg was a vis itor at the home of the Kd Tilleys Saturday night where she also visited with her two brothers-in-law, David Keimig and Dwavne Keimig. Mr. and Mrs. Dwavne Keimig. Mike and David Keimig were here spending the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Tilley and Nancy. Mrs. June Troxell and family were in I ho Dalles and Benton Wn. recently on a shopping troi Mr. and Mrs. John Asher and family went to Prineville, Red mond and Madras last Saturday on a business trip. Deloris Mtmjar and Linda were in Fossil last Tuesday on business. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fleming are lure from Stockton, Calif., visiting their boys, Don and Bob lroxell. Mr. and Mrs. Lloy Munjar had the Don Troxell, John Asher, and Clifford Adams families at there home for a barbecue. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Youneo and family brought Mrs. G race You nee home Saturday from her vacation. Mrs. Youneo is the third and fourth grade teacher at Sprav. Dick Younce was here for the week-end with Mrs. Younce. Dick is a student at EOC. Mrs. Cress from Prairie City Rest Home was here this week end visiting w ith her sons Ted, Clarence and Edgar Cress. Mrs. Ollie Shelton came to vis it her son. Bud Nash and her daughter, Mrs. LoRoy Britt. postal instructor of Grass Valley, spent Thursday and Friday here, instructing Mrs. Charles O'Con nor in her new duties at the post office. Three Attend Army Camp Arthur Lindstrom, Roy A. Lindstrom and Larry Rietmann reported for duty on Saturday morning for a two week "Exer cise Cascade Columbia" at Camp Rilea Involving 4,000 army re servists, army troops, and Ma rines. Mrs. Roy A. Lindstrom and children went as far as Port land with her husband and is visiting her parents, Mr.-and Mrs. Dorr Mason. Miss Linda McGaugh of Ver- dale, Wn has been visiting her friends, Misses Lynn and Sherry Benson for about ten days. On Friday morning she and Sherry left for her home, where Sherry will spend a short vacation. Mrs. James Lindsay, who re cently had surgery, re-entered the hospital Tuesday. Earl Morgan of Spokane spent several days here this week, re turning on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Lindstrom and family left on Monday for Portland and on Tuesday will depart by plane for Los Angeles, where they will vacation for about a week. Miss Marilyn Morgan furnish ed beautiful Hawaiian flowers for the church services last Sun day. The altar flowers were Bird ot Paradise and there were bou quets of anthirium and orchids in the sanctuary. She also ore sen ted orchid corsages to Rev, and Mrs. Walter Crowe 1. Mrs. Martha Resner of Camas Wn. has been a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Holtz. Mrs. Wayne Hams and Infant son, Jeffrey Wavne returned on inursday from St. Anthony's hos pital in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Harrv Ash and daughter, Lila, returned home to lone on Friday. They spent the summer at f ort Hays, Kans., wnere Mrs. Asn and L a at. tended summer school. Lila fin ished her course in business and is now awaitinff a call to the Navy. Mrs. Ash took an English workshop course. The return trip was made throueh narts of Yellowstone National Park and Montana to Washington. where thev visited relatives of Mrs. Ash for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Drake and family are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Drake and other relatives here and In Heppner. Saturday they left for Nevada, leaving the little girls with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Connor in Heppner, and from there will go to Corvallis for a week at coach's school be fore returning here for their children. Friday afternoon guests of Mrs. Delia Corson were Mrs. Dor othy (Slocum) Harkner of Port land and her brother, Earl Slo cum of Palm Springs, Calif. They are old friends of Mrs. Corson and were enroute to Spokane, and Bellingham, Wn. Rebekah Lodge met at the home of Mrs. Omar Rietmann on Thursday evening with Mrs. W. C. Crawford and Mrs. Wallace Matthews as co-hostesses. Their next meting will be at the home of Mrs. Anna Lindstrom and will be a birthday part v. Miss Kathy Rea, a student at l'hagens Beauty School in Pen dleton, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clell Rea. Mr. and Mrs. Carol Miller and family of La Grande have moved into the Lee Palmer house. Miss Vicki Benson and Miss Sharon Mabe were hostesses for the af- fair. Games were played with prizes Deing won bv Mrs. Marv Woods, Mrs. Slinkard, and Miss Sharon Kelson, after which Rita opened her many lovely gifts assisted bv Mrs. Marv Conlee. The gift table was centered with a bride doll flanked by pink roses. At the wedding next Sundav afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Kinzua church, all friends of Rita and Steve are invited to attend. No local invitations were sent out. Newlyweds in Kinzua are Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Burchett who were married Saturday. August 10, at Vancouver, Wn. Attendants of the couple were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Main. Mrs. Burchett is the former Karen Monroe, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reavis. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Roberts of Turlock, Calif., became the par ents of a son Friday, August lb at the Heppner hospital. The young man weighed 6V2 lbs. and loins a sister Kelly. To date he has not been named. Grandpar ents are Mrs. Harvey Spivey and Dofna Martin of Kinzua. Msr. Jack Eicks and children of Topanga Canyon, Calif., visit ed Sunday with the Jiggs Bow man family. They were enroute to Echo where they plan to visit a month. Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Hulett were in Madras and Metolious Sun day. In Madras they visited Mrs. Hu left's sister, Mrs. Ed Fitz gerald. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ferrel spent Sunday fishing at the Prineville reservoir. Mr. and Mrs. Hap Gregg went to Prairie City Sunday to visit Mr. and Mrs. Mary Gregg. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Zitek of Redmond have moved into the house recently vacated bv the Howard Birds. Mrs. Zitek is a sawyer at the mill. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Richmond of Portland arrived Saturday to spend several days with Mr. and Mrs George Smith. The Kinzua Womens club had its regular meeting Thursday af ternoon with Mrs. Margie Ball and Mrs. Helen Wright as hos tesses. Atter a short business meeting the ladies played games. Leslie Bell went to Pendlptnn Wednesday where he had his nand X-rayed and was found to have a broken bone. Mr. and Mrs. John Meadows and family visited relatives in Klamath Falls Sunday. trip. Marilyn and Gary accom panied them. Gus Read was visiting old friends in the community re cently. He formerly farmed the Carl Troedson and Ralph Crum places and now lives at New port. He was interested in the many changes in farming meth ods, and the many improve ments. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Rietmann had as dinner guests Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Rhode uf Kennewick, Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Fugleman of Portland, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. Joel Engleman and son of lone. Mrs. Rhode is the Rietmann's daughter and the rest are sisters and brothers, who were here for the week-end. Mrs. Phil Emert, Robert, De lores and Connie joined friends and relatives from Hermiston last week end on a "pack in" trip to Chimney Lake. There were 16 in the party. The host Madras nlnh went all out as far as hospitality was concerned and entertained with a fine luncheon and a dis play of friendship which was en joyed to the utmost. Clarence Smith won low gross for Kinzua and Wayland Hyatt took low net honors. Mrs. Robert Kelso and daugh ter Sharon returned home Friday from Colusa, Calif., where Shar on had spent the summer vis iting Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Miller. While there this past week they soent two days in San Francisco sightseeing and attending the Ice ruuies. The F. L. pinochle club was entertained Friday evening with' Mrs. Ann Asher as hostess. Mrs. Lola Ferrel had high score for the evening with Mrs. Virginia Sitton having low score. Float ing prizes went to Mrs. Joan Main and Mrs. Barbara Mort imore. Others enjoying the even ing were Marilyn Bailey, Jean Ann Adams, Ann Bastian, Carol Norris, Evelyn Robinson, Marge Asher, and Lois Walker. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Asher and family of Mt. Vernon spent the week-end visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lee Asher. Their daughter Nola remained here to spend an extra week. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hines went to Nyssa Saturday to meet thejr daughter, Mrs. Steve Har rison and children Chris and Kelly of Idaho Falls, Idaho who win visit here and also in Fos sil with Mr. and Mrs. Fuzzy Harrison. New residents of Camrj 5 are Mr. and Mrs. Irvin "Mike" Michel and children Russell and Robin. They are from Moscow, Idaho, and he is employed as a blademan on the road crew. In Heppner last Tuesdav for business, shopping, and medical care were Kenneth Norris, Mrs. Frank Ferrel, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Blevins. Mr. and Mrs. Rusty Medlock and children were in HeDDner Thursday for business and shop ping. At the Camp 5 Community hall Mr. and Mrs. Perle Anderson were Saturday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hall at their home in Heppner. Camp S Women Entertain A potluck dinner sponsored by the Camp 5 Womens' club was held Saturday at the Commun ity Hall with 47 people present. Hostesses were Lola Ferrel, Shir ley Kyle, and Ann Bastian. Ham and ice cream were furnished by ine ciud and afterwards pinochle was played with high prizes going to Lola Ferrel and Earl Norris, low prizes to Jo Ann Michel and Frank Ferrel and traveling prizes to Jean Medlock and Kenny Rico. Attending the card party irom Kinzua were Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Adams. Mrs. Walter Bastian and daughter Billie Jean went to Portland Sunday to spend a few days visiting Miss Dolores Bas tian. They also planned to see Mrs. Bastians brother Ralph Shaeffer and family. Pete Neal of Redmond came Saturday to spend a few days visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Bob Kyle. Mr. and Mrs. Slim Rhoton went to Boardman Saturday to do some fishing in the Columbia. Mrs. Marie Hulett and Mrs. Marie Rhoton were In HeDDner Thursday for business and shop ping. While there they visited with Mrs. Maurice Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Michel and family were shopping visitors to Hermiston Sunday. A potluck dinner and ball game with Spray was held Aug ust 11 at Bull Prairie. Each team furnished a ham for the dinner. In the women's game the score tied 6 to 6, with Ardean Reed as pitcher. Others playing were Lorraine Rico, Jean Ann Adams, Bonnie Campbell, Dixie Middle ton, Betty Saddler, Hazel Kandle, Deanna Howell, and Ona Sar gent. Spray had a mixed team Sargent, Arlet Campbell, Ken Rico, Scott Reed, Marvin Saddler, Arden Tripp, Bill McMinn, and Ronnie Saddler. A home run was hit by Jerry Sargent. For Spray the pitcher was Clifford Adams with players John Asher, Dave Kilgore, Don, Bob, and Tom Trox ell, Don Troxell, Jr., Sam Sam itore, Bob and Steve Medlock. Umpire for both games was O. L. Adams. Golf Club News The annual husband and wife mixed two-ball foursome was played at the Kinzua Golf club on Saturday afternoon, August 17. Seventeen couples, hitting al ternate shots, beat their way around the course determined to out-do each other in a contest of skill and cooperation. When evening caught up with the swingers Ola and Clarence Smith had topped the field with a one stroke lead over five other com binations tied for second spot. The edge was determined when Ola pitched a ball into the cup for a neat eagle two on the ninth hole. Low net was won by La Velle and Mark Jellick, two of our short time golfers who turn ed in a nice net for the nine. The day was climaxed bv a ban- quet featuring thick, juicy steaks grilled and served by Harlan Schroeder, Milo Prindle, Dick Graham and Alan Guinn. Thursday evening the Camp 5 with Helen and Tom Troxell as viucii a mummy Laiu pariy was held with Carol Norris as hos tess. High score was held by Ann Bastian, low by Shirley Kyle, and floating by Marie Hulett and Eva DeMeritt. Others present were Lola Ferrel, Signe Ander son, Lorraine Rico, Barbara Mortimore, Marie Rhoton, Jean Medlock, and Ardean Reed. pitchers. Others Dlavins were Pat Adams, Carol Asher, Aloha Medlock, Bobby Medlock, Steve Medlock, Don Troxell and Sam Samitore. One home run was nit by Bobby Medlock. In the men's game Kinzua won 19 to 18. Pitchers for Kinzua was Jerry Sargent and Bernard Dyer. Others playine were Douglas Little Girl Joins Harry Green Family Little 8-month-old Ella Map Green arrived August 2 to make her home with her new parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Green of Lexington. The little miss was one of several who came from Korea by United Airlines with Harry Holtz, and was met by the Greens in Eugene. Ella Mae joins one other adop ted Korean girl in the Green family.
