HEFPNER GAZETTE ...... . , , ft. i wis- 1'?miWt4&SA SEOUL, KOREA. Every movable, salvageable, usable scrap of lumber Is utilized, in Korea, for projects sponsored by the Joint efforts of The American-Korean Foundation and the Armed Forces Assistance to Korea programs. The "committee" above, including military, civilian, and canine personnel, are shown inspecting a recently assembled lot of saN vage lumber donated by AFAK to The American Korean Foun dation to be used for 4-H Club structures, including Improved hog pens and shelters. For the farm youth of Korea, the 4-H Club program Is a way of life,, and today much of Korea's food comes from stock and seed, as well as technical training given young Koreans under programs. Initiated and sponsored by the Foundation. . Just as American G.I.'s in Korea have always helped Korean orphans, they have also rendered voluntary and invaluable service to the Foundation In Its 4-H Club activities. Unlicensed Tank Cleaners Said Working Racket State Health Officer Richard II. Wilcox, M. D., reports that the swindle of home owners by un licensed septic tank cleaning op erators is continuing this year despite repeated warnings to the public. In one instance a woman from Hood River paid almost $500 to have her 500-gallon septic tank pumped out. Don Pattern, chief plumbing inspector, Oregon State Board of Health, reports that licensed pumpers in the Portland area would charge be tween $25 to $35 for pumping the same size tank. Patton suggests homeowners observe the following pre cautions: 1. Be cautious when anyone offers to give your tank a free inspection. Invariably these in dividuals will look at the solids at the top of the tank and tell the homeowner, "It's full up! We'll have to pump it right away." There is always a layer of solids at the top of the tank, Patton points out, and the usual indication that a tank needs pumping is not the layer of solids at the top but whether or not effluent has begun backing up into the house. Whether or not the tank requires pumping further depends on the size of the tunk and the amount of water used by the household. 2. Ask to see the state license and the county permit both of which are required for septic tank servicing operations. If in doubt, call your local or county health department. 3. Look at the side of the truck, which by law must bear a sew age pumper Identification label on each side. These currently are bright red with white lettering stating they are issued by the Oregon State Board of Health. 4. Have the operator tell you the cost of the job In advance. Patton reports that he has seen families traveling around the state in trucks rigged for pumping septic tanks apparently continuously on the move. Re sponsible pumpers are licensed, lump the extracted sewage in approved treatment areas and never hesitate to state their rates.
