Auction And Barbecue Slated In lone Saturday 11 i nnnn HI GAZ E-TI HEPPNER MES Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, June 6, 1963 Sec. 2-4 pages lone High School Gives Awards To Students For Achievements Annual Awards Night was held at lone High school on May 24 at 8 p.m. for those students who have merited recognition for accomplishments throughout the year. Leslie Madden, senior class president, served as master of ceremonies, and the high school band, under the direction of Arnold Melby, presented a few numbers. A review of the school year was given by Tass Morrison, re tiring student body president. In installation ceremonies the fol lowing new officers were given oath of office: Steve Lindstrom, president; Dick Hynd, vice president; Cheryle Lundell, secretary-treasurer; Shirley Hicks, assistant secretary-trea surer; Merrie Jo Morrison, Cardinal ed itor; Cheryle Lundell, Ionian ed itor; Karen Hams, Connie Christopherson and Susan Lind strom, cheerleaders. Miss Aletha Grytness, girls' athletic director, awarded volley ball letters to Louise Pointer, Barbara Bishop, Lynn Benson, Karen Hams and Susan Lind strom. Those receiving certifi cates and have lettered prev iously were Sue Townsend, San dra Eubanks and Cheryle Lun dell. Mr. Melby presented band awards to Merri Jo Morrison, head majorette; Cheryle Lun dell, student director, and to Tass Morrison and Ron Crab tree as outstanding senior band members. Gil Lujan, commercial teacher, awarded typing pins to Joe Haus ler, Bob Crum, Herb Davidson, Rodney Linnell, Lee O'Connor, Elaine Gaarsland, Barbara Nich ols, Tim Tullis, Joyce Peck, Jim Marin, Jay Ball, John McElligott, Bill Akers, Rollie Ekstrom, Ralph Martin, Mark Halvorsen, Cher ilyn Smouse, Cheryle Lundell, Susan Lindstrom and Karen Hams. Shorthand pins were awarded Tass Morrison, Lynn Benson, Judy Sherer and Arleta McCabe. Joe Hausler, science and math teacher, awarded Tom Heimbig ner a certificate for his achieve ments in chemistry. Editor pins were given Merrie Jo Morrison and Judy Sherer, and merit awards to Cheryle Lundell and Lee O'Con nor. Awards to seniors for achieve ments in newspaper work went to Kathy Rea and Leslie Mad den; annual awards to Tass Morrison and Bill Akers. Ken Klinger was awarded a medal for the most valuable foot ball player and Marv Padberg was rewarded for being the most inspirational football player. Ron Crabtree wsa announced as the most valuable basketball player and Bill Klinger was announced as the most improved basket ball player. Receiving awards for being chosen honorary basket ball captains were Rollie Ek strom and Jim Martin. Gene Harryman, principal, an nounced those students who have maintained at least a 3.25 GPA for the first three nine weeks periods of this school year. These were Louise Pointer, Tass Morrison, Tom Heimbigner, Judy Sherer, Arleta McCabe, Merrie Jo Morrison, Tom Heimbigner, Judy Sherer, Arleta McCabe, Merrie Jo Morrison, Cheryle Lundell, Karen Hams and Clierilyn Smouse. He also announced that the class of '64 had won the class citizenship trophy. Entertain Mothers The 4-H Sit n Knit club en tertained their parents Tuesday night at the Catholic parish hall. We displayed all the articles we made since the club was organ ized last October. Theresa Moore led us in the Pledge of Alleg iance, and Linda Eckman led us in the 4-H pledge. Susan Melby read the 4-H Creed, and we sang songs. Miss Kirmis talked to us about summer camp at Cutsforth Park and showed colored slides of 4-H club work in Morrow county. We presented corsages to our leader and co-leader, Mrs. Cook, and Mrs. Gentry. Refreshments were served to 29 parents and mem bers. Every member of the family will enjoy the barbecue, which will feature rolled boned roast, cooked with special cherry and apple wood by Garry Tullis, Fred Nelson and Jack Lovd. Serving will start at 12:30 and there will be all that those par taking can eat, the committee promises. Price will be $1.75 per plate for adults and $1.00 per plate for children. While adults are taking part in the community auction with the opportunity of picking up some exceptional bargains, kids can enjoy riding in the authentic old horse-drawn stage coach, which will be driven by Buck Lieuallen of Pendleton. Snack bar will also be open throughout the day. Bob Jepsen is chairman of the planning committee and most members of the church have a part in getting the event ready, as well as assisting while it is underway. IONE NEWS IONE Mrs. Beulah Lundell of Portland, was a recent guest of her son, Raymond Lundell, and other relatives and friends in lone and Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Martin and Ralph returned Monday af ter spending the week-end in Dallas. They joined other mem bers in a family reunion and helped her parents celebrate their golden wedding anniver sary. Friends from Astoria, Port land, Roseburg and valley points gathered Sunday to pay tribute to the Ralph Hortons on their 50th anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Harland Lun dell, Janet, Corliss and Curtis of Boise, Ida., spent the week-end in Jone at the home of his par ents, the Oscar Lundells. Ralph Martin left Tuesday for Denver where he will enter the Cliff Mann Floral school on June 9. Couple Has Daughter Mr nnri Mrs. Mike Merewether are parents of a baby daughter, Laura Lee, born May i in seauie, Wn. The little girl, born pre maturely, weighed 4 lbs., 12 oz., remained in the hospital for a short time, but is now making good gains. Mr. Merewether is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Al fred Nelson, Jr., Lexington. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Glennie and sons left Monday for a Vk month's stay in Montana visit ing relatives and attending school. They will stay with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Dahlen in Harlowton, Montana. The stage coach made the actual run from Umatilla to Cayuse in 1874 with David Horn as driver. The rides will be available throughout the day Saturday.
