Seniors Plan Farewell for Hedman By JUNE CHRISTOPHERSON Phone 676-5322 IONE The senior class of lone high school will hold a pot luck dinner and program in honor of Mr. Arnie Hedman on Sunday afternoon, January 27 at the lone high school. Dinner will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the pro gram will follow. Mr. Hedman has been advisor to the students who are now seniors, for the past four years. He is giving up his teaching position to go in to the furniture business in Heppner. Moranothas Give to Missions Maranathas club met Wed nesday, January 9, at the home of Mrs. Milton Morgan with Mrs. Arthur Crawford as co-hostess. Devotions were given by Mrs. Dale Ray. The club reported serving two dinners recently. Mrs. Omar Rietmann gave dedi cation of gifts to Friendly Ser vice which were layettes for sev eral missions overseas. There were 19 members and guests present. Mrs. Arvilla Swanson won the door prize. Mrs. Ella Burgoyne and Mrs. Mabel Craw ford were recently appointed to the ways and means committee. lone Topic club met at the home of Mrs. Fanny Griffith Friday, January 11. Twelve members answered roll with a statement on the effects of Com munism. There were three guests and two children present. Mrs. Jean Nelson gave the topic which was "The John Birch Soc iety." Plans were made for a bake sale to be held February 2, at a basketball game and committee reported on plans for a community play to be given next fall. Hostesses were Jean Nelson, Katherine Lindstrom and Fanny Griffith. Garden Club Hears Speaker lone Garden club met at the home of Fanny Griffith with Mrs. Ronald Bishop as co-hostess, on Tuesday, January 8. There were 14 members and three guests present. June Chris topherson was welcomed as a new member. Roll call was answered with each member giving a New Year's resolution on what they were planning to do garden-wise this coming year. Elaine Riet mann gave the Bird report on the Cardinal and his habits, pointing out that the Cardinal does not live on the West Coast. There was a routine business meeting conducted by Fanny Griffith, president. Mr. R. A. Bentley from Prine ville, showed slides of wild flowers, landscapes and wild animals. He also had a display of polished agates. The door prize was won by Vida Heliker. The garden club would like to announce its appreciation to Eldon Tucker and Pete Hams for collecting the Christmas trees for the Twelfth Night burning, as there was little response by the people of the community in taking their own trees to the burning lot. Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Nelson Sr., parents of Mr. Norman Nelson, are staying at the Nelson ranch for a month or two. They are residents of Oak Grove. The family night movie and dinner put on by the lone PTA was successful financially. It was very well attended. There were five tables of pinochle in play during the evening with prizes going to Mrs. Flossie Mar ick, high, and Mr. Dean Graves for 300 pinochle. Son Born To Sherers Mr. and Mrs. Dick Sherer are proud parents of a baby boy born Monday morning, January 14 at the Pioneer Memorial hos pital. The baby weighed 7 lbs. and 9 oz. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Morgan will be in Portland for a few days to attend a Wheat League meeting. Services In Idaho Call Rietmann Family Funeral services for Mrs. George Mumford, mother of Mrs. Gene Rietmann, lone, were neia in Nampa, Idaho, Tuesday, Jan uary 15. Mrs. Mumford died fol lowing a short illness Thursday, January 10, in Nampa. In lieu of flowers, relatives are asking that donations be made to the Heart und. Mrs. Rietmann is the only sur viving child. Accompanying her and her husband to the service were Mr. and Mrs. Omar Riet mann, lone. Fergeson on Roll Allen D. Fergeson of Heppner made the fall term scholastic honor roll at Oregon State Uni versity. He is a sophomore In the School of Engineering. Alter the meeting the group was enter tained with a turkey dinner in the dining room. The lecturer's hour was held following the din ner. A most instructive talk about the proposed Willow Creek Dam was given by Oliver Cres wick. C. C. Jones, Mrs. Alonzo Hender son and Mrs. Art Keene. The hostess made cakes honoring those having birthdays. Plans were discussed for the park to be made beside the lodge hall, and cards were sent to the sick mem bers. Next meeting will be at the home of Bertha Hunt. Mr. and Mrs, Mel Boyer of Hood River were week-end visi tors in Lexington. Mr. and Mrs. Serge Covall and family of Hillsboro have been re cent callers at the O. W. Cuts forth ranch. Party Honors Newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Vern Vlall and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Messenger were host to a "Welcome Home" party and shower Saturday night tor the newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Dexter Miles. Those present at the party were Mr. and Mrs. lone PTA Presents Interesting Program IONE lone PTA met Wednes day, January 9, with president Gary Tullis in the chair. Min utes were read by Mrs. Ronald Bishop, secretary. Ways and Means committee reported on Family Night movie to be shown Sunday night, January 13. A letter of resignation as vice president of PTA was read from Katherine Lindstrom. There was no action taken to fill this posit ion. Mr. and Mrs. Walt Jones were introduced as new members. Mr. Oliver Creswick spoke on the Heppner flood control nrnt?mm. Joe Hausler conducted the pro gram which was a take-off of the TV show "I've Got A Secret." Panelists were Garv Tullis. Mrs. Jean Nelson, Mr. Matthews and Ray Heimbigner. Guests were Gene Rietmann. Mrs. Lewis Halvorsen, Glen Biehl and Mrs. Milton Morgan. Refreshments were served bv some of the fathers including Jim Barnett, Louie Carlson, Lewis Halvorsen. Rov Lindstrom. Pete Cannon and Glen Biehl. Miss Thomson Enters Hastings College Miss Bernice Thomson. daui?h. ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thomson. is now enrolled in the Hastings Business College, Portland, tak lng a full business course prepa ratory to entering the secretarial field. Miss Thomson transferred from the Eastern Oregon College of Education, La Grande, at the end of the fall term, where she was taking a course in business education. She Is now living at The Martha Washington, in Portland. Franklin Miles of Pendleton, Mr. and Mrs. Al Frost of Hermlston, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Nolan, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Marquardt, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Steagall, Mr. and Mrs. George Hermann, Mr. and Mrs. Messenger, Mr. and Mrs. Viall, Mrs. Ethel Dunbar, mother of Dexter, and Laddie Henderson. Games were played and refresh ments were served. Mrs. Elsie rox of Wenatchee, Wn., recently visited her mother, Mrs. Cora Allyn, at Pioneer Memorial hospital In Heppner. Betty Darnielle of Reno, Nev., and Johnnie Darnielle of Port land have been recent visitors at the Vic Groshens, Jr., home in Lexington. Thev are brother and sister of Mrs. Groshens. Several are Hospital Patients Mrs. Morris McCarl underwent major surgery at St. Anthony's hospital on Friday of last week. Mrs. Bertha Hunt, Mrs. MeCarl's mother, and Mrs. Florence Mc Millan remained in Pendleton a couple of days to be with Mrs. McCarl. Charley Padberg had surgery at St. Anthony's hospital one day last week. Carroll Messenger underwent major surgery at the Community hospital In Pendleton on Friday of last week. Mrs. Carl Mar quardt and Mrs. Bill B. Mar quardt, sisters of Carroll, and a brother, Gerald, all spent Friday in Pendleton to be near him. Mrs. T. E. Messenger. Sr.. of Mitchell has been confined to her home since Christmas be cause of illness. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Orwlck were visitors in Pendleton one day last week where Mr. Orwick received medical attention. Mrs. Joe Yocom and Mrs. Charley Padberg were visitors in rr-ndieton on Friday of last week. Three Links club met at the home of Mrs. Oliver Devin on Thursday of last week. The club surprised Mrs. Devins with a cradle shower. Those present for tne atternoon were Mrs. Armin Wihlon, Mrs. Archie Munkers, Mrs. Merle Cornileson, Mrs. Ed ward Hunt, Mrs. A. F.
