' Students Checks Union Pacific railroad present ed $4G0O in scholarsrip checks to 23 Oregon State university fresh men at a recent campus dinner at Oregon State University. Receiving $200 checks from Eastern Oregon were Gordon R. Eakin, Condon; Elizabeth A. Van Schoiack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Van Schoiack, and Kathryn E. Norton, Stanfield. Dr. James II. Jensen, university president, reminded the recipi ents that "the United States is unique in the world because a higher education is available to anyone wro wants to work for it." J. W. Jarvis, supervisor of the UP agricultural depar t m e n t , said, "The Union Pacific started the scholarship program in 1921 because it realized it should help build leaders in agriculture, in dustry and education." Every year the UP offers a $200 scholarship to one vocation al agriculture student and one 4-H member in 198 counties. Jarvis, who was the first voca tional agriculture student to re ceive a UP scholarship as a youtr at Ontario, said 8745 scholarships have been granted by UP, 788 in Oregon. Pine City Friends Honor Mrs. Finch; Others Entertain Mrs. Marian Finch was guest of honor at a surprise birthday party Oct. 22 at the Burl Wat tenbureer home. Pinochle was enjoyed by guests Mrs. Willard French. Mrs. Leo Ashbeck, and Mrs. George Luciani. Gifts were opened and refreshments enjoy ed at the close ot tne evening. Also in the Pine City area, the Home Economics club met at the school recently where a pro ject lesson on Swedish weav ing was given by Mrs. Andy Skiles and Mrs. Ida Slaughter. Also attending were Mrs. Jasper Myers and Mrs. George Luciani. Mr. and Mrs. Truman Sether of Seattle, Wash., visited recently at the Jasper Myers ranch. Mrs. Phoebe Bartholomew accompani ed her daughter and husband back to Seattle for a visit. While here Mrs. Sether, Mrs. Bartholo mew and Mrs. Myers visited the shut-ins and aged at Pioneer Memorial hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Myers who were recently married at Twin Falls, Ida., visited at the home of his brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Myers October lii en route to the Seattle World's Fair. They will make their honn; in Jerome, Ida. . Recent visitors at the Willard French home were Mrs. Mabel French, World, Wyo., mother ol Mr. French; Homer French, Salem, Ohio, uncle of Mr. French and cousins, ,Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ewing, Carfield, Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ilealy and Susan were in Portland recently where Susan consulted doctors. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Drake, Sr., traveled to Corvalhs Sunday, October 21, to see their grandson Raymond Keith Drake, initiated into the Corvallis chapter of fn molay. Keith is a senior this year in the Corvallis high school. J Drakes also visited otiier rela tives and with friends in the valley before returning theii home in Heppner. They also attended the Pacific International. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Myers went to Republic, Wash, recently where they purchased six bulls.
