TO THE EDITOR. . . To the Editor: Dear Sirs: Hello again! Please forward the paper to Littleton, Colo., Box 140. We are settling there perm anently as of today (Oct. 6). We wish to thank you for the paper following us over the Northwest. We haven't missed a copy, thanks to you. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. Edward James Gorman (formerly Sharon Cutsforth) To the Editor: Dear Sir and all American loving people of our fifty states. We all like to give to the care for the needy of Foreign coun tries but there is plenty of room for Care packages in our own fifty states, which should come first. And speaking of Foreign Aid, four or five billion at a whack while we get in our old U.S.A. Lemon Ade-Aid and it is getting pretty darned sour. Yours sincerely, Andy Hayes To the Editor: The increase of registered Democrats has become a matter of more than passing interest to many in recent years. It has been suggested that a substantial part of this increase is counted in student voters registering for the first time, as the result of constant pressure in our public schools by biased teachers and administrators pushing more NOTICE! Perhaps this is an overstate ment, but then let's look at what's happening in Morrow county. During this election year no Republican candidates for pub lie office have been invited to appear in Heppner schools, in cluding Governor Hatfield. However, when Al Ullman came to Heppner he was given not only an invitation but a captive audience, the entire Heppner High school student body, of course with the permis sion of the administrators. Al Lamb was introduced not as the mayor of Heppner, but as the chairman of the Morrow county Democratic Central committee, and he in turn introduced Ull man. Ask yourselves whether such impressions help convince a stu dent to register as a Democrat when eligible to vote. I have no objection to public officials speaking to our students, but in fairness, our governor should have had the same opportunity as was given Al Ullman; and I certainly can't condone using Ulman's appearance as an ex cuse to stage a partisan political rally among susceptible teen agers. It's time straight-thin king democrats in Morrow county, es pecially those working so hard to repeal the school reorgani zation act, think again before voting for Ullman or Morse, who would further limit local control of our public schools. Don Turner, Lexington Editor, Heppner Gazette-Times Dear Sir: It is evident from the recent decision of the Morrow County School Board to locate the new Irrigon-Boardman High school in the Boardman area in prefer ence to suitable Irrigon sites, that the future welfare of the pupils involved was not fully considered, or if considered, ig nored for some unknown reason. It is inconceivable that an In telligent representative group of people guided by a supposedly intelligent advisor should flaunt the concrete facts and make such a decision after reports from sur veys by disinterested groups have strongly advised against the locating of schools, churches and homes in close proximity to the Boeing Missile testing site, one firm of consulting engin eers recommending that the school not be located closer than 25 to 30 miles to the testing area because of the noise and accom panying offensive odor. Can you imagine a group of pupils trying to study under these conditions? Representatives of both the State School system and the Corps of Engineers have indi cated that the decision was the local board's, but with recom mendations that as much space as possible be left between the school and the testing site. M. 177 MAIN ST., HEPPNER PH. 676-9200 FEN is true that the decision should be the board's, but hot to the detriment of the majority of those who will be involved down through the next few years. Some of the pertinent facts are: The town of Irrigon is perm anent and even now the area of greatest population, whereas Boardman must relocate in its entirety. In four years' time that they have been aware of this, an acceptable townsite has not been secured. Many who, because of construction of the John Day dam, have been forced to sell, have already moved to new homes in the surrounding towns or have indicated that they in tend to. The tremendous expense that will accompany the instal lation of a water and sewage system when the new townsite is chosen will be prohibitive for the few interested in remaining. It appears that the matter lies in the fact that a few have in vested heavily in lands of the area and without a mass accept ance by the people to stay and "help them feather their nests", these speculators will be "left holding the sack". By bringing pressure to have the school lo cated in this undeveloped area, they hope it will draw enough of a nucleus to save their necks. Where does that leave our high school? Isolated out in a sage brush wilderness with the ex pense of transporting our child ren to it for years to come. Should their plan to build a Dog Owners Warned Of Bait Stations Lethal bait stations are now being placed in Morrow county for the control of predatory an imals in the interests of live stock and game management. Warning notices are posted at strategical points within the im mediate area and at the station site itself. Detailed information may be obtained by contacting Jerry Rood or Nels Anderson at the county agent's office. metropolis around it materialize, well and good, but if not? Our country has many examples of money spent and wasted. What a price to pay to some few self centered promo 1 1 o n seeking individuals who will soon be gone and not have to reap the harvest of their folly. I strongly feel that the Morrow County Board would do well to reconsider these and other facts and make a decision for the High School to be locatrd in or near Irrigon, the . present and likelv future center of greatest population. lours respecuuuy, Chester A.
