Guests Enchanted With Bali Hai Theme At High School Prom "Bali Hai." tho nf chantment, was the background lor an evening of dancing and iresnments at the Heppner High Junior-Senior prom Fridav evening, May 4. A volcano, appearing to be viupung, mrnisheri seats for yuecn Kose JNash and King Kennelh Daggett. The royal couple had been chosen by the junior class to rule over the events of the evening, and were presented with orchid leis, to wear during the festivities. Water lilies grew in an island pond at the foot of a waterfall near the entrance to the room, and a bridge over the pond served as the entrance. A pale moon cast light over the orches tra and dancers, with palm trees silhouetting a grey sky behind the orchestra and refreshment stand. Music for the evening was fur nished by the "Intruders" from Yakima, Wn. Refreshments were served from a little grass hut by four eighth graders, David Matheny, Carla Luciana, Leslie Meadbr and Paul Hisler who were dress ed in native costumes. Attending were iracy ana Tina Connor Barbara Enckson, Randy Ball and Kelley McChntock. Assist ing were Mrs. Morgan Connors ana Mrs. Kay Ayers. On March 28, Susan Chally celebrated her eleventh birthday by inviting friends to a show slumber party. Her guests were Pamela Hughes, Christy Wat- kins, Terry Pettyjohn, Karen Blake, Marcia Jones and Sue Ellen Greenup. one Rainbow Girls To Install Sunday Kathy Rea, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clell Rea of lone, will be installed as worthy advisor of the lone Order for Rainbow Girls Sunday, May 13, at 7:00 p. m. PH. 676-9200 Mr. and Mrs. Obenaus, Newlyweds, Honored At Friday Reception Mr. and Mrs. Richard Obenaus (Eleanor Rice), were honored at a lovely reception at the t-pis conal parish hall Fridav night The young couple was married May 4 in California and arrived here for the reception. After the newlyweds cut the first piece of the 3-tiered cake, Mrs. Walt Hill, Pendleton, and Mrs. William Zinter, lone, con tinued serving. The white cake with yellow and pink decorations was made by Mrs. Albert Schunk. Pouring were Mrs. Robert Mil ler, La Grande, aunt of the bride, and Mrs. Gertrude Applegate, cousin of the bride, Mrs. Frank Anderson, and Mrs. W. C. Rose wall. Mrs. Vern Evans had charge of the gift table and guest book. Gordon Pratt sang two num bers, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. (J. C. carmichael. Mrs. Jack Loyd and Mrs. Helen Cox were in charge of the re ception with Mrs. Earl Blake and Mrs. A. D. McMurdo assisting about the rooms. The kitchen committee included Mrs. Jim Thomson, Mrs. Walter Wright, Mrs. John Pfeiffer, Mrs. Tom Marlatt, and Mrs. Loyd. Bouquets of purple lilacs and pink and yellow carnations were placed on the gilt table, piano, and mantle. Mr. Obenaus, a native of Salz burg, Austria, is a civil engineer in San Francisco, and Eleanor, a 1958 graduate of Heppner high school, Stevens college, and San Jose State, is head of personnel at the Emporium in San Fran cisco. They left Saturday for their home in Sausalito, Calif. Out of town guests for the re ception included Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rice, Seattle; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller, La Grande; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Thompson, Pendleton; and Mr. and Mrs. Walt Hill, Pendleton. Engagement of Local Couple Announced The recent engagement of Miss Kathleen Spencer, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. C Bruce Spen cer, Heppner, to Ned Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. Barton Clark of Ruggs, is announced by the bride-elect s parents. Both young people are attend ing Oregon State University in Corvallis, where Kathleen is completing her first year and Ned is enrolled as a sophomore. They are both graduates of Heppner High school, Kathleen with the class of 1961 and Ned in 1959. He attended Linfield College in McMinnville one year before transternng to OSU. A summer wedding is planned by the couple. OES Social Club Has May Card Party Mrs. Mervin Leonard of Lex ington and Mrs. Clarence Rose- wall were hostesses for the reg ular Saturday afternoon party of the Ufc-s Social club at the Ma sonic hall last week. Tables of bridge and pinochle were in play, with Mrs. c (J. Carmichael holding high bridge score and Mrs. Charles Stout win ning high in pinochle. Next meeting of the group will be a no-hostess luncheon in June to be held in the Episcopal Parish hall. Beta Omega Sets Dinner Date May 19 IONE Beta Omega sorority held their meeting on Wednes day of last week at the ranch home of Mrs. Charles Doherty, with Mrs. Doherty and Mrs. Don ald Peterson hostesses.
