TopicClub Library Benefit Brings Good Response By LORRAINE BALL IONE The lone Topic club sponsored a card party Wednes day afternoon, April 25, at the lone Legion Hall for the benefit of the lone Public Library. Ap proximately $112.00 was received. This money was donated for the maintainance of the library and purchasing of new books. Contract bridge and pinochle were in play during the after noon with prizes going to Mrs. Ola Ruggles, first; Mrs. Lota Tibbies, second; Mrs. Clarence Kosewall, low and Mrs. Gladys Connor, jack high. Mrs. Louis Carlson received first in pinochle, Mrs. Vera Rietmann second, Mrs. Helen Pettyjohn low and Mrs. Adelle Wright, 300 pinochle. During the refreshment hour new spring fashions were model ed by young people in the lone area before a background which used a library theme. In the pre school group were Debbie Baker, Bill Tews, Donna, Debbie and Barbara Palmer, Jan Ekstrom and Mark Rietmann. Christina Lindstrom, Bill Jepsen, D Ann Harnett, Shirley Baker, Jerry Pettyjohn and Kathy Holtz were included in the primary group. Tlio.se in the intermediate grades who showed spring fashions were Kristin Nelson, Sandra Carlson, Charles Nelson, Terry O'Connor, Pamela Proud foot, Dates to Remember: May 3 Rebekah. Sports, school, and dressy clothing were modeled by Cheryl Lundell, Judy Sherer, Tass Morr ison, Diane Pettyjohn and Linda Halvorsen for the high school group. Soft music was played during the show bv Arleta Mc Cabe, Cheryl Lundell and Linda Halvorsen. Club Meets Tuesday Garden Club will be held at the home of Betty Spohn on May 8 at 2:00 p. m. Mrs. Fredrick Martin will be the co-hostess. Several of our community are confined tn the hospitals. Mrs Lana Padberg is still a patient in Pioneer Memorial hospital however her condition is im proving. Also in the Heppner hosnital confined to illness is Mrs. James Barnett, who was ad mitted this past week. Mrs. Joel Englcman is a pat ient in Pioneer Memorial hos pital where she underwent surg erv Fridav night. Her condition Is also reported improving and she is expected home about the end of the week. Mrs. Lewis Ball, Mrs. Cecil Hick and Mrs. Edythe White hosted the Bingo Club on Wed nesday at the home of Mrs. Ball Eleven members were present. Mr. and Mrs. Berl Akers, Mr. and Mrs. Art Dazell and Mrs, Eulenna Corley were among the Willows Grange members from lone who attended Pamona Grange at Rhea Creek on Sat urday. Mr. and Mrs. Elmo McMillan visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Swanson over the week-end. Mrs. McMillan re mained for a longer visit with her mother, Mary Swanson. John Swanson was home for the week-end to visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Swanson and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tews of Seattle, have been visiting the past week at the home of their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tews. Mary Swanson was hostess for a cotiee hour at her home on Wednesday of last week for Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tews and child ren and Anne Smouse of Hepp ner and Mrs. Tuda Swanson. Attend Portland Trapshoot Mr. and Mrs. Hershall Town- send attended the Telegraphic Trapshoot on Sunday in Port land.. Accompanying the Town- sends were Mr. and Mrs. George Snider. Mr. and Mrs. Harvy Smith visited his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Howie in Port land over the week-end, return ing to lone on Monday. Mr. Smith also took in the trap shoot while in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirk vis ited in Gresham and Portland during the week-end. They vis ited the Portland zoo and saw Belle and Packy, the new baby elephant. They reported the new arrival at the zoo is quite an attraction. Gordon Nichols, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nichols has received n honorable discharge from the Navy, arriving home this past week. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peter son, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Peterson nd Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peter son were hosts to a family night potluck dinner at the Valby church on Sunday evening. A large crowd attended with a de licious dinner enjoyed by all. Riflemen Meet Saturday There will be a 4-H Riflemans lub meeting this Saturday, May i, at 2:00 p. m. at the cafetorium. All are invited to attend, and immediately following the Fellowshio is sponsoring a ba zaar and food sale. All proceeds will be used for projects in the church. On Sunday Lexington is fortunate to have Evelyn Jep- sen as a guest speaker on North west Christian College Day Evelyn is a graduate of the lone H eh school in the ciass 01 iybi and well known in the commun ity. There will be special music and following tne services a coffee hour is planned. An an nouncement has been made that the offering of the JO pieces of silver for the building fund was a huge success and increas ed the building fund by $144.90. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Harrison are the nroud parents of a son born on Thursday, April 26, at Pioneer Memorial hospital, ine young fellow has been named Todd Wayne. Mrs. Dean Hunt and mother, Mrs. Opal Key of Heppner are expected home this week from a week's trip to Springfield, Mo., where they visited relatives. Myrtle McCarl ot Heppner is helping at the Morris McCarl home a couple of days this week. Mrs. McCarl of Harrisburg re turned to her home there last week, after a short visit in Lex ington at the Morris McCarl home. Here For Cornelison Services Connie Lee Cornelison of the U. S. Navy and stationed in San Francisco, Calif., returned to his base on Sunday after a week n Lexington called by the ser ious illness and death of his grandfather. Joe Cornelison. He was taken to Portland by Ray mond Schoonover who is going there to work. Mr. and Mrs. E. Cornelison and daughter were Lexington visitors on Wednesday to attend the fun eral services of Joe Cornelison, a brother. Two Attend District Meet Mrs. Fredrick Martin and Mrs. Fannie Griffith attended a dis trict meeting of Garden clubs in Stanfield last Thursday for the Blue Moutain District. Mrs. Grif fith and Mrs. Martin saw the conservation posters which were entered from this area. Marvin Padberg's poster will be entered in the state competition. Win The Bowling Tournament About 15 couples of the Lex ington community and friends, enjoyed an evening of fun and bowling at Echo Saturday night. Winning in the bowling tourn ament were Bob Kilkenny, all events; Kenneth Turner, men's singles; Lorene Ledbetter, wo men's singles; Earleen Miller, women's all events; Janice Cuts forth and Wes Marlatt won the doubles. Everett Harshman drove to Seattle Monday to meet his two grandsons, Noel Gay and Everett Harshman, who will spend a month here with the Everett Harshmans. The youngsters, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Gay Harshman, flow into Seattle from their home in Juneau, Alaska. Neal Penland visited at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Ed Schaf fitz Saturday and Sunday from his studies in Eugene. Jack Van Winkle left Monday from Prosser, Wn., with his father-in-law, Don Hannaman, on a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska. They plan to drive through in a new pickup purchased by Mr. Hannaman, Ex-Heppner Ranger Up for Retirement The retirement of two long; time employees of the Umatilla National Forest is announced by Supervisor Wright T. Mallery. Retiring are John W. Clark, forest mechanic with 29 years of ser vice, and Marion R. Saling, dis trict assistant on the Pendle ton Ranger district, who has 26 years of federal service. Clark began his Forest Service career at Medford in 1933. He transferred to Pendleton In 1946 as head mechanic the position he retained until his retirement. Saling first worked for the Forest Service In 1929 on the Heppner Ranger district. He transferred to the Pendleton Ranger district as District assistant in 1947. Supervisor Mallerv announced that the position vacated bv Clark is being filled by the pro motion or uinton (J. Case. The position vacated bv Case is be ing filled bv Bill D. Henslev. Saling's successor is Neil D. Zander of Pendleton. Mrs. Ray Ayers went to Port- land Saturday and returned Sunday, bringing home her granddaughter, Kelly McClin tock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gale McClintock. The young Miss will spend two weeks here.
