This is the most outstanding feature in our city park since city crews completed the but chery of two of the large trees there. And why? They had been butchered before! About this time every year cit izens seem to feel it is a mistake to let a tree grow in the manner nature decrees with tall, spread ing limbs reaching for the sun light and the sky. So with axe and handsaw, powersaw and cables they set about the annual rite of "topping their trees." "Killing their trees" would better describe the activity, for this is precisely what they are doing; killing them, slowly. A tree can no more live out a normal life span after being "topped" even once, than a person can live a normal life with an amputation every now and then. A tree de velops in balance root system, trunk, and spreading limbs each in its proper degree to sup port the rest. It is as serious to upset the balance by severing the top as by severing the root system, or stripping the bark from the trunk. To be sure, the tree tries to sur vive: It sends out an enormous growth after being "topped" in its struggle to live growth that will provide as much area as possible for leaf development (the tree's manufacturing plant). But the odds are all against its success. The new growth cannot provide the uncongested area for leaf development and exposure to sunlieht and air that wide- spreading, well-developed limbs provide. The blunt end oi a sa wed-off limb several inches in diameter is open invitation to decay, even alter our teeDie efforts to assuage our minds about butchery by painting over the cut.) No wound on a tree can long remain free from de cay if it is larger than the tree can cover with new bark, it's one healing process, within a vear or two. Unless, of course, it receives constant and careful attention until the trees new bark growth has had time to cover the wound. A severe "topping" such as the park trees have received will have reduced their life span by decades, and their beauty is destroyed forever. A home-owner should think carefully before severing even a large limb or two; the value of a tree, and its beauty, should be weighed against any possible danger to his house from a limb downed by a high wind. "Topping" should become as frowned upon as burning stubble in a wheat field. Careful pruning and shap ing a growing tree is good and necessary, but butchery is a tragic mistake. Let's stop killing our trees! Goodness knows they are none too plentiful now. Let's let them grow, tall, majestic, beautiful! Let's let them lift our eyes and our spirits! Let's lot them grow, and grow with them.
