Her Arrival 21st of April. 1961. IFEYS, Ger many, Switzerland and Luxem bourg leave Europe In Rotter dam for a six-months-exchange in the United States ol America. Arriving In Washington D. C my friends and I are given a warm welcome In the 4-H Cen ter. After eight days, entirely fill ed out with preparations and In structlons concerning our future ti. program, I am sent to a farm In the state of Kansas. First Horn In Kansas On my arrival In my first home, I am expected by my first host-mother. She receives me as a daughter, telling me that she is glad to have me in her home, and hoping I should feel homely and comfortable. Already the first day I assist to a nice family-celebration. It's mother' day. I only learn It when my host father comes home with a lot of parcels and flowers he has himself chosen for his wife. Every day I learn something new In assisting my host-mother in house-keeping and cooking. My host-brothers and sisters are well-educated 4-H kids. Though they are very young, they al host parentu and ulster! are all very kind and open-hearted. On the occasion of my 25th birth day, they arranged a pretty fam ily Party. 1 have never Keen auch a big birthday cake In-fore, and though 1 am so tar away from home I am very happv and feci like the daughter of the house. With The Martina' In Ion At the University of CorvallU we are given a nice welcome and I meet there with my first Ore gon family. Before returninu home, we six-nd several days at the rsciric. Already on the way to my new home. I can remark an enonnoua difference between Kjna and Oregon. In the first state tht-rt are only endlt corn field, here In Oregon 1 lh firM vegetable garden and or chards, liut a hirel time 1 over, fanners make holiday and n-.y host family takes me wl ft hiking In the mountain. I ran t slop admiring the beautiful pine we dlMtiver there. I learn a lot about Ameiican Geography. One day, on our way home, w ee real Indian. They are oulet ly picking berries. 1 only knew Indiana from stories where they are painted a wild and adven turous creature, and I am really lurprined. 'w n disap pointed to find them peacefully picking berries. Leav Taking I leave with great regret, out not without hoiK! of turning aualn to America. First I want to thank the 4 II organization which made my trip to America possible, then all the frlemts and families 1 met with and who contributed so largely In making my May term In the Unltevt Slates such an enjoyable and forever unforgettable one.
