Only one flue fire has callerl out the fire department this fall, but several happen every year, Ruggles said. j with antlers? How about a three legged deer? Or maybe a buck deer hale and hearty with a bullet In its heart? How about a black snow goose or a white crow? These wildlife oddities and freaks are just a few that have been brought to the attention of the game commission over the years. The strange creature, or creatures, usually leave a lasting impression with the observer. And well it should for such phe nomena are rarities in the wild life world, seldom seen by the hunter or other outdoor user. We don't know how many of these freaks are actually pro duced In the wild, but tha vc- currence Is probably much mou prevalent than what one would believe. However nature seems to have a way of culling these od dities and misfits from her ranks with only an occasional one sur viving for any length of time. Not long ago, Francis Ives, dis trict game biologist at Corvallis, was informed by a landowner of a young deer hobbling around very strangely. Invest i g a 1 1 o n showed this young animal to have but three legs, two normal legs on the hindquarters, and a single deformed leg in the front. The fourth leg was ves tigial and showed as a mere stump on the animal's fore quarter. How this youngster survived ns long as it did under the hard laws of nature remains a mys tery. However, the yearling whs all but done in from malnu trition and it was taken to the research center at Oregon State University, For almost nine years a hen pheasant at the game commis sion's K. E. Wilson game farm wont about her business of lay ing eggs tor tne hatchery In cubators. During these years she produced in the neighborhood of 600 eggs to be artificially hatch ed and ream! into husky phcas ant cnicKs. Suddenly, as if tired of her many years of hard work with out once rearing a family of her chores, changed completely and I what he thought was a larre developed all the characteristics 'spike. When the animal went " . a ,1, I 1 la I J 1 A of an adult cock pheasant. Lon tail feathers, brilliant plumage ear tufts, raucous rooster trow ing, and even the arrogant ctrut ting were all a part of her m-w role. Probably the most common change from the normal Is color variance. Many species of wl'd life seem to be prone to color throwons, with albinism the most prevalent. Albino deer ara frequently observed by outdoors men, which run the gauntlet from cream color to pinto to pure white. Almost every year some hunter, bags such a trophy. White robins are reported occas ionally, as are white crows. Al bino ducks, skunks, muskrat, beaver, mice, and other animals are reported from time to time. How can a snow goose be even whiter than it is? It's true and one of these is on record as an albino. Doe deer with antlers are te ported to the game commission almost every year and have be come accepted as fairly common. A rarity, though, Is the report this year of a cow elk with ant lers, to this writer's knowledge, the first to be taken. The antlered cow elk or should we call this creatwo a bull-cow elk was shot by Sam Burii of Portland during the first week of the 1961 elk season in the Chesnimus country of north eastern Oregon. Burrl slipped up on this ma-1 down he found it had but one antler, a forked horn growing almost straight up just oir the center of the skull. The antler was about 22 Inches ' in lengt'i and completely in the velvet. Now this was a strange plac for an antler to be growing, but Burrl was in for a second surprise when he began to dress out tne animal only to find it to be a mature cow. A law breaker f-r shooting a cow? Burrl didn't know but rightly decided thai any cow elk foolish enough tj be running around sporting anl lers should be fair game. Any way, as one hunter put it, ant iers is antlers and what elK hunter has the time to run around and look at both ends before he shoots, Strange, indeed, are some of the wildlife oddities, and one cf the most unbelievable is the buck deer wheih lived to a ripe old age with a hunter's builet in its heart. - This fine mule deer buck wis killed by Ernest Wood of Port land several years ago. The ani mal was in excellent condition, fat and healthy. Wood even com mented that this deer was as fine eating as you'd wish to set tooth to. About a week after the hunt, Mrs. Wood decided to have fried heait for dinner. While slicing the heart for the fry pan, she cut into something hard ana metallic, and upon investigation, SANTA SAYS- MNKERINTOR ? SHINY NtW '62? i-0 Sura you can manage a new model this year!
