She was pre sentcd a going away gift from Kuth chapter. Order of Eastern Star. Marjorie Worden and Lois Hunt were hostesses for the afternoon play and used attrac tlve Halloween and fall decor ations altout the room. Irlzcs were small pumpkins filled w!th miniature pumpkins with candy or coins Inside each. The win ners. Beulah Mankln, high In Dinochle. and Lota Tibbies, high In bridge, discovered that all was not candy as they generously offered it to the guests! Not all treats are edible! ! o o o I ENJOYED a very nice visit with Mr. and Mrs. William Cun ningham last week, interviewing them for their anniversary story. We did much reminiscing, as I especially remember Mr. Cunn ingham stopping at my folk's place to eat his lunch many time when he ran the county maintainor. And of course, we got to visit with him! In the course of the conversation, we got around to ages, Mr. Cunning ham is 77 and Airs. Cunningham 71, not years old but young! o o o FAY FERGUSON entertained the What's Trump bridge club Wedne.sd.iy afternoon. They lnit lated a new idea for trial with the club meeting at 11:00 a. m., a noon luncheon and continued play until mid-afternoon. Making up two tables of play were Helen Schaffitz, Lota Tib bies, Virginia Ku.se wall, Hazel Mahoney, Happy Graham, Delia McCurdy, and Margaret Blake. Lota won high and Happy won low. Happy told me she thought she always won low! Not every one can do that. I always end up in the middle, you know not even a booby prize! ! Carrie Beckett, Mary Harrl Doris Welkins, I'earl Wright, am Millie Evans. Guess who won lieu la h! Did she ue Knotted cards? Low went to Hannah, and Gladys and Carrie won the double pinochle. o o o ANNE SMOU.SE Is still talkin about the Broadway show h saw In New York. She said she had planned fur so lung to see it and wonde red If she would be disappointed. Not so! ! Just bat from her trip, and I heard he mention another tour scheduled for the southern states next fall! ! ! So, Ola, get out those maps and start planning! o o o BARBARA GRlBHLK celebrated her thirteenth birthday with dinner "out" at the Teen club, to the movies, and back home for a slumber party with fou classmates as guests. Joining in the tun and excitement were Brenda Young, Diane Schaffitz, hrna Lynn Winchester, and Meridy Webb. Wonder if Syb Wells recovered from the slum ber party five talkative girls! As for Barbara, she was oh so glad to be 13, she had been 12 for so long! o o o JUNE BELLENBICOCK won high at the Bridgettes gcttogeth er Inst Friday night with Inez Meador as hostess. hlsle Cole won second high and Bebe Mun kers won low. Highlight was the delicious smorgasbord served during the evening of play, Girls, what about those diets? Others taking part were Kay Robinson, Lillian Sweek, Mabel Heath, and Edda Mae Lovgren. o o o TUESDAY ENDED the Elks weekly duplicate bridge play with Phil Mahoney and LaVerne Van Marter winning high, north south. Second went to Gordon Pratt and Bert Huff. Jney neid separate business meetings fol lowing the supper with discus sions on the forthcoming Vet eran's Day breakfast at the hall starting at 4:00 a. m. They in vite all you early-bird elk hunt ers for some good eating Hazel Hamlin, auxiliary president, says she hates to get up at that hour, but she and others will be there giving out with the hotcakes, ham, bacon and eggs, and steam ing coffee! Sounds good and for a good cause, too! o o o ANITA STOCKARD was hostess for Mother's club at her home Monday night with Esther Kir- mis, county agent, giving tne lesson for making the ever pop ular smocked pillows. They dis cussed plans for the special Christmas meeting in December. Also last year's president, Rita Wolff, received her past presi dent's pin. Mrs. Everett (Ber nice) Struckmeler was a guest, o o o FOURTEEN MEMBERS were present for the Co-op Biddies meeting in Lexington Monday afternoon. They brought with them the items they made to enter the Hen House Fair in Portland this month. Represent ing the Co op group, Edna Turn er and Fay Ferguson will attend an art workshop In Pendleton Saturday to bring back hobby and craft ideas for the members' use. o o o I HAVE this week a delicious, very moist, applesauce cake recipe which comes to me from Mrs. Creston Robinson. Kay got the recipe from her mother, Airs. Lena Kelley, and she doubles It for her family of four. They es pecially like it for hunting lunches. Kay and I made two of them at her home last month, they are easy and quickly made and practically fool-proof! Applesauce Cake 1 cup sugar V cup butter or shortening l',4 cup applesauce 1 t (rounding) soda t salt 1 t cinnamon Mi t cloves 2 cups flour 1 cup raisins andor nuts (op tional) Cream tut(er and sugar, add applesauce, and silt in dry in gredients, beat until smooth, bake in medium size loaf pan for 30 to 45 minutes at 350 de grees. 0 o o MRS. CAL SUMNER sent me this frosting recipe, one that kids really go for. Frosting xk cup jelly 1 egg white Put into small bowl ana Deat until the desired stiffness. Jerry says she uses any jelly she has handy. . o o o GOOD SUPPLIES of frozen etrctables are available with October holdings one-third more than last year. - Look lor irozen food buys in the markets. In meat buys, beef is still the leader, especially the cuts from the loin, rib, and chuck, al though chuck prices will rise in the next month. Veal is still very high, expect pork prices to start going down and bacon prices are dropping. 0 o o I NEED recipes, how about a stew recipe, and Thanksgiving recipes for later this month. The building Is re-dec orated each year using 2,000 to 3,000 bushels of corn at a cost of $15,000. Inside there are "corn paintings'' of pioneer scenes but they are not re -set each year. Mrs. bmouse said the weather was very nice, Just missed the storms, and they enjoyed the Dtautiful fall colors everywhere. Enrolled At Linfield Ned Clark, son of Barton E. Clark of Heppner, is among the 972 students enrolled for the fall semester at Linfield college in McMinnville. Clark is a Junior majoring in business administra tion at Linfield. Mrs. Sam Nagel, Mrs. Dave Had dock, Mrs. Ken Magrew and the hostess, Mrs. Rogers. Mrs. Sam Miller assisted with the gift, but was unable to attend. Card Party Scheduled Bridge and pinochle enthus iasts are reminded of the card party planned for Friday, No vember 17, by the Lexington Al tar Society. It will be held at St. Patrick's parish hall, start ing at 8:00 p. m. A special door prize of a Thanksgiving basket will be presented to a lucky winner.
