HOTEL GRILL Chaff and Chatter By Wcs Sherman Let's Go To School Again Mcmt parents have wished at some time or another thst they could bo little mire In the rorner at school to we how their little Janes and Johnnies are doing in the classroom. This Is the week to be a mouse In the corner, for It Is Amerlcsn Education Week and a special Invitation Is extended to all adults to come to school again and see trie eoucauonaj program In action. Morrow county schools are scheduling open house events for parents to acquaint them with work Doing aone. mis suuum not be considered "Just another one of those National Weeks" but rather as a good opportunity to go and see what Is going on In the classroom. Consult with teachers and help cement that mutual understanding between parent and teacher a vital step In aiding the development of tne stuaent. Theme for 11 American Education Week Is "Your Schools: Time for a Progress Report" Local schools are following this theme with demonstrations and exhibits. They are anxious to report to you parents and patrons and welcome your ques tions and comments. Our schools are always open to the public and visits are welcome any time, but we parents often find ourselves "too busy" to take the time to go to school. However, our teachers and administrators cannot be expected to do the Job of edu cating our children alono. They need the cooperation and help of a responsible, Informed public to help with the manifold problems confronting them In this ever-changing world. So during this American Education Week resolve to take more Interest In your schools. Do this by going to school, seeing first hand the problems and conditions that exist, talk with the teachers and administrators, find out what improvements are needed. Take this opportunity to become Informed. This will give a better basis for intelligent action the next time a vote comes up on school issues. Parents and teachers alike should recognize once again that the Child is the all-important thing In our educational system. During this week they should dedicate themselves to work to nether for the best interests of the Child your child and my cnild and theretore to the best Interests of our nation and Its democratic way of life. Cardinals Have Spirit of Champions Championship athletic teams need more than ability to rain the top rung in competitive sports. Spirit and desire are almost as important as ability. The zest and enthusiasm dis played by an outstanding team gives that extra something that supports its performance and carries the players on when lesser teams falter. However, some teams have the desire and not the ability, and they fall along the way despite their fighting hearts. The lone Cardinals have developed an admirable spirit It is readily discernible not only in their games but also in their practices and attitudes. It is retleced in tiie demeanor of tne coach, of the school and the atmosphere of interest shown by the community. They must have had this spirit when they won the state 8-man championship last year, and as the team enters the quarter finals of the state playoffs, they show the mental conditioning so important to success in athletics. Coupled with their excep tional ability, this makes them a hard team to defeat and they aie undefeated for the year. At this time, no one knows if lone can go all the way through the rugged competition between the Cards and another state title, 'mis year, all games will be away from home, and that makes it more difficult. However, throughout tne year they have performed as cham pions and they will display tne same spirit In the playofrs. Coach Glenn Biehl has done a line Job with his team, and it is going to take a great team to defeat his boys. When the Cardinals go to John Day to play Mt. Vernon Satur day they will have solid support lrom tneir home area and many will be present to cheer them on. We Join their hundreds of rooters in the hope that they can come through with victory and go all the way. But If they should lose, we il still consider them champions lor the spirit and pertormance they displayed. IT WAS a cikmI thing that no profe-inlonal basketball scouts were In the stands Thursday nlk'ht when the Morrow county Ul Stars (composed of teachers and roaches) played tne liariem Clown. If they had been, some of our best teachers might have been hired for the pro ranks: The Clowns, whose untie were hilarious and crowd pleas inc. play by rules foreign to batkctball naturally, but It would have twen Interesting to see how the locals would have made out In a serious contest with the towering touring team. We were Impressed with tht abilitv of Darrel Kelscn, Bod can tonwine and diminutive Pete Clennie, who seemed to nave a real shooting eye In drilling em in from lr out. Capturing the fancy of the big crowd, though, was Don McClure, who proved especially agile in view of his avoirdupois, and Big Jcem Su thei land, who might have received an award for be ing the best sport of a highly enjoyable evening of entertain ment But, kidding aside, It looks to us that Morrow county's teach ers could put up a team that could really go to towa Those boys are good. AFTER 45 years in Heppner. Mrs. Frank t. 1'arker quieuy saia goodbye this week and went to walla walla, wn., to maxe ner home. Hundreds of memories must be compressed into those years, and it probably tooK treat deal of courage for Mrs. f arker to depart fiom the old home town, as she felt she must Her many friends here will miss tier, but all wish her tne best of happiness in her new home, ed yesterday. Fellow drives up Willow street and breihly whips around right in the middle of the block. Most of the offenses appear to be by traveling sales men, and maybe they think our town la so small that no regu lations apply. But you seldom see a native do it It's usually one of these furrlncr. If a sales man came in here after pulling a stunt like that, he'd have some talking to do before we'd buy anything from him. It isn't exactly that the vio lation Is such an awful bad thing, but it smacks to us of a condescending attitude towards our town. Gazette-Times office. utm. toil - "SOME OF the best beef In the world is just over those hills,' said Don Robinson of Kirk and Robinson here the other day as lie pointed to the hills surround ing Heppner, "and even some of our local townspeople don t know a." Some of the awards and rec ognitions that our local stock growers are getting back up Don's words. ProbaDly the county needs to "blow its own horn" a little more on this point Old-timers probably take it lor granted, and newcomers haven t lound it out. QUITE A number of friends of B.ll and trances Wildman, lormor owners of the Gazette nines, have inquired about them and want to know what they are uol.iK. They have bought a filbert farm near Newberg Rt. 1, Box 183-A. We'll confess that we've heard it said that the newspaper business would drive anyone nuts, but never heard that it specified filberts. IT COULD ONLY happen In our town: Jim Farley watched with some satisfaction the other day as a happy couple drove away from his garage in a brand new Buick they had just bought Across the street, Earl Ayres, tord dealer, witnessed the pro feedings from the sidewalk After the car had passed, Earl caught Jim s eye. The Ford deal er's face was wreathed In a big I trin, as cordial as if he had sold the couple a new Galaxie. Rais ing his hands over his head, he shook hands with himself in pleasant salute to his competitor on Ileppner s Auto Row. A THING that Irks us no end and that we consider an af front to community pride and safety is to have these autos with out-of-state licenses boldly maKing u turns on our streets. iou see it all the time.
