Importance of Proper Waste Disposal Stressed By Sanitarian A warning against Installation of Inadequate septic tank sy terns which might fall to dis e of wastes and cculd make a home practically unsaleable I a:; been Issued by W. B. Cul ham, district sanitarian, Slate Board of Health, with offices in Pendleton. He pointed out that state reg- vlntions require tanks of at least 5o0 rallons capacity for one-bedroom homes, 750 for two bed- n-oms, 1.000 for four, and 250 gallons more for each additional bedroom. However, the minimum 500 gallon tank Is acceptable only for summer cabins or other limited-use dwellings, according to the health official. FHA and CI n-quirements specify not less than 750 gallon capacity for any home with two bedrooms. Failure to meet these minimum requirements would make a home ineligible for federal and state loan guarantees and thus difficult to sell, he said. Because of the Increasing trend toward such labor-saving devices as dishwashers, garbage disposal units and automatic washing machines all of which put a greater load on the waste disposal system Culham advis ed people building or remodeling to "err on the side of too much rather than too little capacity." He said this also is true for the tile field into which the sep tic tank empties. The state re quirement Is for not less than 150 square feet of trench bottom for any home, but the only homes which could qualify for this minimum would be those with not more than two bed rooms and where the tile line would be located in clean, coarse sand or gravel. The state tile I field requirement is on a sua ing scale, depending on the type of soil, going as high as 250 square feet of trench bottom per bedroom in areas with clay con taining small amounts of sand or gravel. State regulations also require distribution box between the septic tank and the tile field, Culham said. The sai.itarian said, persons planning to Install home waste disposal system may contact him for advice at Room 218, Raley Building, in Pendleton, or may 1 4. write for the free leaflet "A Sep tic Tank System for Your Home." These regulations apply only to homes. Persons planning sys terns for motels, restaurants and other commercial and industrial establishments which have dif ferent requirements were urged to talk with Culham before starting construction.
