"This Is an In crease In number of beneficiaries of about 5 percent since Feb ruary, 1959, the last previous date for which county figures are available," he said. Nationally, about 13 Vi mil lion persons were receiving old age, survivors, and disability In surance monthly benefits at the end of 1959 at an annual rate of more than $10 billion. At the close of 1910 the first year in which monthly benefits were payable beneficiaries through out the nation totaled 200,000. Almost half a million disabled- worker beneficiaries and their de pendents receiving benefits at a yearly rate of over $400 million are Included In the figures for 1959. The number of wives, hus bands, and children of disabled- worker beneficiaries receiving monthly benefits i n cr e a s e d sharply in 1959. Such benefits were first payable for Septem ber, 1958. Nationally, from Feb ruary to Decemoer iyo, ine number of these beneficiaries more than doubled from 60,000 to 126,000. Payments to a retired worker with no dependents receiving benefits averaged $69 a month nationally at the end of last Dec ember; to a retired couple, both of whom were receiving benefits, the average payment was $121. The average for a widow with two young children was $169. Uy contrast, Welo recalled that when benefits first became pay able In 1910, the average month ly payment to a retired worker with no dependents receiving benefits was $22. and to a retired couple the average payment was $36. As social security celebrates Its silver anniversary (the original Act was signed Into law on Aug ust 14, 1935) about 74 million working people are In covered employment or self-employment In the course of a year. They are building old-age, survivors, and disability protection for themselves, their depe n d e n t s, and their survivors under the social security law. The table below shows the number and monthly amount of each type of benefit being paid in Morrow county, as of Decem ber 31, 1959, the date of the latest available tabulation: netired workers (218) $13,150 monthly; Disabled workers (2) $161 monthly; Wives or husbands of retired or disabled workers (57) $2,113 monthly; Widows or widowers (29) $1,701 monthly; Dependent parents (1) $32; Mothers with children (8) $435 monthly; Children of retired, de ceased, or disabled workers (41) $2,053 monthly. For the entire state of Oregon, old-age, survivors, and disability insurance payments at the end of December, 1959 were being paid to 160,259 beneficiaries at the rate of $10,213,440 per month.
