In order to gain the greatest income from the farm flock, as well as the range band, It Is Important to get off a big mark etable lamb early In the season when prices are higher. It is difficult for the range flock op erator to breed as early as the farm flock owner, however, many of the other management prac tices can be followed for early fast gains. The farm flock owner that breeds now can sell his lambs in June before pastures begin to dry up will fnid that his income can be increased con slderably. It is important that this extra care including flush ing of ewes and the care of the ram be practiced if the sheep man is to gain top income from his sheep flock. At the end of July only four agricultural commodities were on the above parity list Only one of these four, potatoes are grown commercially in Oregon. They were oranges at 135 of parity; potatoes 120; grape fruit 115 and sweet potatoes 105. Other products on the July list of Importance to Oregon pro ducers were apples 98 of par ity; beef cattle and carves each 87; milk at wholesale 85; butterfat 797 ; hogs 78; oats 75; eggs 733; lambs 72; wheat 71; chickens 68; tur keys, corn and barley each 67; rye 61; wool 58; and sheep 55 of parity. With these j which stood at 71 at the end of July. Cattlemen have been encouraged during the past week with quite a bit of activity as far as buyers are concerned. Sev eral buyers have been in the county and while few calves have been sold, offers are beginning to shape up to somewhat near the price that growers can see some profit in the cattle business this year. With some heavy year ling steers sold for 23 cents and some offers for calves of 25 and 27 cents the picture is beginning to change. One of the buyers In the county Is Newell Anderson, Othello, Washington who inci dentally was featured In the May 1960 story on steam rolled barley in the Far Journal. Visit ing with Mr Anderson, we were pleased to hear that he had pur chased some calves for his feed lot last year which came from Morrow county. His interest in our calves stemmed from the ef ficient gains which were made by them In the feedlot One of these bunches of calves were from the Charlie Monagle ranch near Heppner. While many of the calves for the Anderson's feedlot have been bought In the Okanogan country, he is Inter ested In Morrow county calves that can be purchased by Oct ober 1 In order to take advan tage of fall pastures before going into the feedlot 1 i V, te 7V Trm, k PUT IT TO THE TEST!
