They are still working for more names just to keep the interest up, says E Geary Neal, Salem, who heads the movement. He reports there are now 2500 petitions be ing circulated in Portland and that clubs have been organized in that city and in Linn, Benton, Marion and Yamhill counties. Senator Morse is in South America and expects to be back to his Oregon home sometime before Christmas. LIBERALISM SHOWS The extensive liberal group of the Democratic party will de mand liberal planks in the par ty's platform to be given a test try at the December 12 meeting at the Salem Armory. The liberal plank will have its final test at the January 29- 3q convention in Salem at the Marion Motor Hotel. The Far mers Union will lead the drive for a public ownership of pub lic owned serving utilities plank. NEW HATFIELD HOME The first party given in their new Salem home by Governor and Mrs Mark O Hatfield honor ed the governor's father and mother, Mr and Mrs Charles Dol en Hatfield who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last Sunday. The couple was feted at a beautifully arranged reception in the recently re-furbished pio neer period mansion facing Bush's Park to view the Bush Art Museum. Happily proud of her five-month-old granddaughter, Eliz abeth Hatfield, was Mrs Vincent Kuzmanich, Portland, who shar ed her delight with many of the well -wishers. The anniversary cake decorated with red and gold complimented the color scheme of the home. NEWSPAPERMAN PASSES Frederick Barlow Currey, 86, pioneer Oregon newspaper pub lisher died in Salem Sunday. He was editor and publisher of the LaGrande Evening Observer, a newspaper that he and his late brother, George H Currey, found ed in the early 1900's. He owned and operated several newspapers in Oregon and California. His name carries honor of his great uncle, Samuel Kimbrough Barlow, founder of the Barlow Trail and explorer of the fin ishing expanse of the Oregon Trail. Surviving are his daughters, Mrs Gladys Wood, Salem, Miss Carol Currey, Tokyo, Japan, and a nephew, Albert Currey, co editor of the Eugene Register- Guard. FUND RAISING DINNER Robert Straub, Demo c r a 1 1 c State Chairman, Springfield, will be honored at a fund-raising dinner following the party's state central committee conclave at the Salem Armory on Dec 12. The Jane Jefferson Club is sponsoring the $5 a plate dinner and all proceeds will be turned over to the state committee says Mrs Phyllis Rand, president of the club. Chairman Straub will be the principal speaker. This will be the second dinner honoring a state leader. In 19o7, the late Dave Epps was similarly hon ored. Some 200 committeemen, alternates and friends have in dicated they will attend. The new state Bourbon chair man is a "holdover" member of the Oregon Senate representing Lane County. He has dedicated his legislative efforts to "help accelerate the needed industrial growth of Oregon." "A. B. C D." When Gov Rockefeller was in Salem last month his political strategists put thumbs down on a suggestion to use the slogan, "A. B. C. D. Anybody cept Dick." Now we hear it is being used extensively in southern states and the Great Lakes country. Cartoonists have started letter ing it in too. FLUORIDATION TRY Plans for a 1960 state confer ence February 18 at the Marlon Motor Hotel in Salem have been announced by the Oregon Health Council, composed of 44 official voluntary and civic organizations Interested in public health. The conference will emphasize problems of fluoridation of pub lic water supplies, the blood bank program and community responsibility for the health of migrant workers, according to George J Sirnio, Council chair man, Salem. The conference will discuss aging problems as a preliminary to the 1960 State Conference on Aging, which will be held In Salem on April 29 and 30.
