Chats With Your Home Agent By ESTHER KIRMIS The organization and re-organization of 4-H clubs seems to occupy my time these days. Oct ober seems to be the month for this activity, and I am trying to make contacts all over the county. Tuesday of last week, 16 girls visited the home of Mrs Robert Jones who is starting a 4-H knitting club. We had nine-year old girls up through high schoal seniors that showed interest. Sue, Mrs. Robert Jones, put out a cry for help. Mrs Bruce Spencer has consented to help lead the club. This week they received their 4-H knitting material and were to bring their knitting needles and yarn to learn the first steps in knitting. I also spent some time in lone visiting leaders and prospective 4-H leaders. There, is interest in a beginners foods and a begin ners clothing club besides the three clubs which were organ ized in previous years. We are making a letter sur vey of girls in the lone com munity to determine how many clubs and leaders will be need ed. Concern was also expressed that there was no 4-H club for young boys In the lone com munity. With several interested mothers working on the idea we might come up with a boys club in either outdoor cookery, pho tography, electricity, or ento mology. The field is wide open. Pendleton, Oregan Phone CR 6-3111 Mrs Larry Schaad, the spark plugs of this activity, have done some shuffling in the clothing clubs and have come up with the idea of having one club for the grade school youngsters and one for the high school girls. "The Happy Sewers", Mrs Had wick's club of grade school girls, have already organized with Mary Gerberding as president; Susan McCoy as vice president, Shirley Jackson as secretary; Gloria Senn as news reporter; and Sherry Williams as song leader. These girls are enrolled in "Sew It's Fun" (2nd year cloth ing;) "Charmingly Yours" (3rd year clothing) and "Teen Wise Clothing" (4th year clothing). Members, besides the officers listed above, include; Pamela Hubbert, Georgene Hash; Linda Senn, and Sheryl Witherspoon. Mrs. Fred Murtishaw, Irrigon, will act as assistant leader with Miss Ann Schmeder as junior leader. Mrs Larry Schaad will super vise the activity of the high school group as soon as they organize. Mrs Hadwick and Mrs Schaad are also sampling the interest in continuing the boys foods club which was organized a year ago, They have arrange for a 4-H program to be given at the Nov ember 16 Irrigon P-TA meeting. Exhibits will be displayed and a small style show is planned. Pins and awards will be presented to boys and girls that completed this past year's 4-H club work. I took the "Hawaiian Kit" over to Irrigon on Thursday, October 8, and sat in on their extension unit meeting at the home of Mrs Maxwell Jones. Mrs Margaret Weaver, Mrs Marguerite Houghton, and I pre sented a travelogue of the Ha waiian Islands with the aid of colored slides and native objects. I think we all felt we had learn ed a great deal about our 50th state and it will revive our in terest in our pen-pal exchange. I found Mrs Rose Titus, chair man of the Irrigon unit, doing a fine job in presiding over the business of the unit. HEPPNER GAZETTE-TIMES, Thursday. October 15, 1959 9 Over The Tee Cup I By Jackie Labhart I wish to apologize to you golf-. 4 and in trying lor her birciy ers for not .brewing your weekly cup of tee talk for the last month; due to hunting season, fall housecleaning and other numerous and sundry chores, my golf clubs have been somewhat idle, therefore no ingredients for this "cup." But this aromatic autumn at mosphere has become too intox icating and I have finally suc cumbed to its tantalizing spell. Ton golfing gals turned out for our weekly ladies day competit ion and vou might say the weather certainly suited us to a "tee." Those playing were Cork Norene. Hester Creswick, Gene Case, Hazel Mahoney, Vi Lan ham, Inez Meador, Dee Gribble, Marie McQuarrie, Coramae Fer guson, and myself. Vi shot low gross score for the day, and Coramae and Hester tied for haying the lowest combined scores on No 3 and No 5 holes. LADIES DAY OBSERVATIONS: Inez parring the No 3 hole (her first par since she started play ing, which hasn't been very long) . . . Dee wearing new ventilated type golfrhg attire. . . Gene worrying about the bees . . . Cork driving the green on No 'winged" her putt too much and ended up by taking a 4 on the hole (needless to say the "Cork" popped) . . . Maxine Gray bring ing coffee and homemade cook ies to our rest stop at the No 7 hole. ATTENTION GAL GOLFERS: Tee off time for ensuing ladies days this fall will be at 10:00 Tuesday mornings. A beautiful new addition to our golf course Is a handsome glass case bulletin board, which should make a grand weather proof place for all handicap list ings and other golfing gab. Due to my absence on the LEXINGTON Mr and Mrs V E McMillan and John Spence were Baker visitors at the Irby home on Sunday where they attended the golden wedding anniversary celebration hold in honor of Mr Spence and Mrs McMillan's brother and wife, Mr and Mrs Harry Spence. Miss Barbara Stoagall and Butch Eatch were weekend vis itors in Lexingtoin.
