lone Auxiliary To Make Jackets For Vets Hospital by echo palmateer The American Legion Aux illary met at the home of Mrs John Eubanka Tuesday after noon, Oct 6. Mrs Charles Doherty 1st vice president conducted the meeting. Mrs Eubanks, rehabili tatian chairman, reported that jackets will be made for the pa tients at the Veteran's hospital in Portland, also scuffs (slippers) made from ticking and lap robes are to be made for the Veterans at Camp White in Medford, , Gifts for the Christmas Gift Shop for the hospital should be in by the Nay 3 meeting. It was voted to give $10 to the Christmas Cheer and send the check-of-the-month money. Mrs Cecil Thome gave a re port on a recent conference at Milton-Freewater. Others going were Mr Thome and Mr and Mrs G Hermann. The following chairmen were appointed by Mrs Hermann, president: child welfare, Mrs Ted Palmateer; Poppy and Poppy Poster, Mrs Eldon Tucker; reha bilitation, Mrs John Eubanks; Americanism, Mrs Earl McCabe; Pan American, Mrs Gordon White; Girl's State, Mrs Elmer Holtz; junior activities, Mrs Ves ter Hams; community service, Mrs Robert Rietmann; civil de fense, Mrs Robert DeSpain; mus- natha club of the lone commun ity church. Mrs Lewis Halvorsen entertain ed the Eastern Star social club at her home Wednesday, Oct I with a luncheon at 12:w p m. Mi's E Markham Baker and Mrs Hattie Crabtree were co-hostess es. There were 18 present. Mrs Lloyd Howton and daugh ters of Hermiston were visitors nere Sunday. The lone fire department was called to the home of Mr and Mrs Lee Paimer Thursday morn ing of last week to put out a small fire caused trom the oil stove. Tnere was mucn smoke damage in the house. They also attended the ban quet given by Mr Atkinson, head of the dam construction. Among the dignitaries from Oregon at the banquet were Vice President and Mrs Richard Nixon, Governor Mark Hatfield, the governor from Washington, Senator and Mrs Richard Neuberger. Arthur Bergstrom and Wayne Gollyhorn recently received their honorable discharge from the armed forces. Arthur is the son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Bergstrom and served with the Air Force for ten years. He was stationed at McChord, Wash and was in Korea twice. He spent the past year in Korea where he received his discharge. He was staff sergeant Wayne is the son of Mrs Doris Gollyhorn and served with the Naval Air Force for four years. He was stationed at Widby Is land, Wash and was in Guam for some time. He was third class mechanic. Both boys are graduates of the lone high school. Relatives from here who at tended the funeral services of Earl Crawford in Portland Mon day, Oct 12 were Mr and Mrs Wate Crawford, Mr and Mrs Mil ton Morgan, Mr and Mrs Delmer Crawford, Mrs Tad Miller, Ar thur Crawford, Rollo Crawford, Harlon Crawford and Clyde Crawford. Earl Crawford is sur vived by his wife Helen, two daughters and one son; three brothers and two sisters. Wate Crawford of lone is a brother. Mr and Mrs John Briggs and children of St Helens spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Gil bert Lujan. The Topic club met at the home of Mrs Garry Tullis Fri day afternoon, Oct 9 with Mrs Charles O'Connor and Mrs John Proudfoot as co-hostesses. At the business meeting conducted by Mrs Norman Nelson, president, a report was given on Know Your Library Week by Mrs Proudfoot; it was voted to purchase a mem orial book and list the memorial books in it and place the books on the regular shelves in the library; raising money for the library was discussed and a com mittee was appointed to decide on this. Mrs O'Connor gave a report on the Gilbert and Sulli van operetta, H M S Pinafore and played the records on a phonograph. The November meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Mabel Cotter. Guests at the meeting were Mrs Walter Dobyns and Mrs Rod MacKen zie. At the regular city council meeting Tuesday evening, Oct 6, it was voted to send repre sentatives to the hearing in Con don, Oct 20 in regard to the speed of trains through towns. A graph ic count of cars will be taken at the crossings in lone. Most of the streets in town have been patched. The reservoir will be repaired and cleaned soon. Mrs Earl Wright of Baker Is visiting her mother, Mrs Ida Grabill and other relatives. Mrs Ray Hurst of Arlington has been staying at the home of her daughter and family, Mr and Mrs Bill Rietmann. Mr and Mrs Richard Rea of Portland were visitors at the Lewis Halvorsen home Sunday they took their daughter, Donna, home with them. Mr and Mrs Tom Wilson of Sand Point, Idaho, former Hepp ner residents, are in Heppner visiting friends and also for hunting. They expect to be here for about two weeks. Susan Drake led singing, Down In the Valley. The members also played a game. George Van Schoiack led the flag salute, Da vid Anderson led the 4-H salute. Joe Hay, county agent, assis ted Marcel Jones, leader of the club. Mrs Howard Pettyjohn, Mr and Mrs Doug Drake and Mrs Wagenblast were also present Mrs Anderson served refreshments. The next meeting will be at the Marcel Jones home Novem ber 8. Sandra Eubanks, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Eubanks re turned to school last week after being absent for a few weeks. She received injuries in a rodeo in Dayton.
