Fish 'Housecleaning"
Due Soon at McKay
The Oregon state game com
mission plans to chemically treat
McKay Reservoir for the removal
of undesirable fish on Thursday,
October 1, 1959. Toxaphene will
be used to treat the reservoir
and game commission person
nel will disperse the chemical.
In certain concentrations, Tox
aphene may be harmful to hu
mans and animals. The amount
of Toxaphene to be used to re
move fish from McKay Reservoir
will be well below the critical
level for mammals after it Is
mixed in the water of the im
poundment. Fish may be dying ,
for as long as thirty days after
treatment and because of the
nature of Toxaphene people are
warned not to salvage fish for
human or animal food supplies.
No large concentration of dying
fish, as seen when rotenone is
used, Is expected at McKay Res
ervoir. Fingerllng rainbow trout will
be re-introduced into McKay
Reservoir as soon as the water
becomes non-toxic to fish. This
should be around March or April
of 1960.
