It was the champion performance horse for the last two years, and was to have been entered this year but was injured recently. Presenting the ribbons is Fred Mankin, superintendent of the horse show. Kenneth Jones Wins 1st in Shoot Word was received this week that Kenneth Jones, lone, recelv. ed first place In the Grand Amer ican champion of champions In the junior division at the Nat ional Trap Shoot Monday at Van dalia, Ohio. He broke 100 out of 100. Monday was the first day of the shoot, the previous three days were preliminaries. Kenneth advised his mother, Mrs Lawrence Jones, of his a ward by phone Monday night. His father accompanied him to Ohio and they plan to return by Sunday. Polio Shots Urged On All Residents The local chapter of the Nat ional Foundation is urging those who haven't had polio shots to have them now while there is vaccine available. September Is a peak polio month and every one from babies to persons 40 and older should be protected, the county health office said this week. Chapter officers state that many mothers and fathers are careful to have their children protected, but forget about them selves. For those who have had three shots, a booster Is recommended one year after the third shot for further immunity. Vaccine is available to all lo cal physicians. Thursday, August 27, 1958 Final Rites For Louis C Bergevin Held in Pendleton Louis C Bergevin, Pendleton, for many years a rancher in Morrow and Umatilla counties, died Saturday night at Baker of a heart attack. He was 64 years of age. Mr Bergevin was born April 7, 1895, in Athena, the son of a pioneer family, who settled in Eastern Oregon and Washington before the Whitman massacre and he was well known through out both states. He operated ran ches In Umatilla and Morrow counties until 1955 when he re tired and moved to Pendleton to make his 'home. He was a member of St Mary's Catholic church and a life mem ber of the Elks lodge. His first wife, Edith, died in 1953 and he was married to Ina Lyons in Pendleton in 1956. Requiem mass was at St Mary's church in Pendleton at 10 a m today with interment at Olney cemetery there. Mr Bergevin is survived by his wife, Ina, Pendleton; one son Denward, lone; one daughter, Mrs Betty J Garvey, San Jose, Calif; five grandchildren; one brother, Al Bergevin, Sacramen to, Calif; three sisters, Mrs Ivan Yeagel, Seattle; Mrs Ed Ather ton, Pendleton; Mrs Mike Estes, Walla Walla; step children, Jack and Donald Mayer Portland, Lawrence Mayer, Seattle; and Mary Lou Sterkel, San Francisco. Pvt Larry Fetsch, who is sta tioned with the Army in Kansas, arrived last Thursday to spend a 15 day furlough with his par ents, Mr and Mrs Al Fetsch. Mr and Mrs Marvin Smith of Coos Bay were visiting here last week with Mr and Mrs Jack Van Winkle and Mr and Mrs LeRoy Gardner. Nazarene Church to Hold Services In Heppner Sundays The lone Church of the Naz arene is in the process of moving the church from lone to Heppner and temporary pastor, Rev Har old Gilliam announced this week that services will be held tem porarily in the Heppner Seventh Day Adventist church. Sunday school will start at 10 a m, morning worship at 11 o'clock and the evening service at 7:45. lone Names School Advisory Group A five-member school advisory committee was elected Wednes- rlav niirht at Innp from rpslHpnts of lone, Lexington and Cecil communities. The group will oversee the operation of the lone schools, where students from all three communities will attend classes. Chosen by the group were Bryce Keene, Don McElligott and Mrs Earl McCabe of lone; Mrs Jack Barak of Lexington, and Jack Hynd of Cecil. Thirty-two persons attended the meeting. Church Guild Group Enjoys Wallowa Trip The boys of St Albln's guild of All Saints Episcopal church spent two days last week camp ing at Wallowa Lake. They were accompanied by the Rev Bruce Spencer and Winn Crist. Those going were Gerald Bunch, Stuart Gribble, Mike Crist, Eric Anderson, Neal Pen land, Arthur Burkenblne, Alvin Ayers, Bruce Spencer, and Tim Drtscoll. PARENTS OF DAUGHTER Mr and Mrs Larry R Huffman (Nancy Wright! of Tampa, Flor ida are the parents of a 6 lb 9Vi oz boy born August 22 and named Lawrence Robert Huff man III. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Oral Wright of Seattle, Wash and Mr and Mrs Lawrence R Huff man, Sr of Memphis, Tennessee. The baby has one sister, Lisa Loree. Mr and Mrs Garnet Barratt left for Pendleton Sunday for a few days. Wranglers To Again Serve Sunday A M Cowboy Breakfast Members of the Wranglers are again making plans to feed up wards of 50o hungry cowboys and townspeople at their annual cowboy breakfast Sunday morn ing. Serving for the general public will start at 7 o'clock at the club house on the fair grounds and it is hoped that everyone can be filled with real Eastern Oregon food by 10 a m. Mrs Lowell Gribble is general chairman for the breakfast. Special Swimming Hours Slated Special hours have been set for this weekend at the Heppner swimming pool so that there will be no conflict with rodeo shows. On both Saturday and Sundty the pool will be open only from 5 to 7 o'clock. The pool will remain open un til Monday, Sept 7. HEPPNER VISITS HEPPNER Allen G Heppner, his wife and two children of Moundridge, Kansas stopped in Heppner last week to look over the town which carries his name. He possibly Is a distant relative of Henry Hepp ner, the town's founder. Heppner was driving highway 30 when he noticed road signs pointing to Heppner and took the side trip to look the town over. SONS VISIT Dr and Mrs A D McMurdo were surprised Saturday when their son, Dr Bernard McMurdo of San Mateo, Calif, flew in for a visit. He had stopped in Corvallis to pick up his brother Scott and Miss Connie Relgle and landed in Lexington one hour and nine minutes out of Corvallis. RAINBOW GIRLS TO MEET Ruth Assembly, Rainbow for Girls will hold their first fall meeting Sept 7, 7:30 p m. Elec tion of officers will be held. OES TO MEET Ruth Chapter No 32, Order of the Eastern Star will hold their first fall meeting Sept 11, 8:00 p m. FIRE BURNS GRASS A grass fire burned several acres of grass Wednesday morn ing at the Don Llnnell ranch three miles west of Morgan. The' lone fire department answered the call and aided in keeping the blaze away from a barn. Mrs Walter Barger and three children of Gresham are visiting at the home of Mr and Mrs W C Collins. Mr Barger will join them here on Saturday. Miss Karen Valentine, who has been in Santa Rosa, California during the summer, is recuper ating from a car accident, at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Jlm Valentine, Jim Thomson and son Bruce returned Tuesday from Portland where they visited the Centen nial Exposition. Today (Thursday) Mrs James Thomson went to Wind Moun tain Girl Scout camp near Stev enson, Wash to get her daugh ter, Meredith, who has -been a counselor for the summer. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Mayer and Susan of Lebanon visited Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Penland. Mr and Mrs Glen Nyman and daughters. Judy and Robin who have been visiting at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Har old Evans left Wednesday for their home at Seattle. Mr and Mrs Don Markoff of Portland were guests last week at the home of Mr and Mrs Harry Bongers, and Saturday guests at the Bongers home were Mr and Mrs Joe unningham and three children of Walla Walla. Mr and Mrs Ernie Winchester and daughter Erna Lynn return ed Saturday night by plane from Boston, Mass where they were visiting relatives. Mrs Jack Loyd and son Tim were in John Day for the week end. Tim remained at the home of his grandmother, Mrs Charle9 Trowbridge for about a week's visit. Dwight Clift of Pendleton Is visiting at the home of his aunt and uncle, Mr and Mrs Bill Turn er for the past week. Mike Slyter of Seattle has been visiting for the past month at the home of his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Ambrose Chapin. Mr and Mrs Harold Becket re turned last week from Portland where they visited relatives and also attended the Centennial Ex position. Mr and Mrs Clifford Powell of Corona, California were guests last week at the home of his sis ter and brother-in-law, Mr and Mrs George Blakney. CAPITAL PA.1ADE ' (Continued from Page 7) DAVID EPPS SCHOLARSHIP A $500 physical education scholarship in memory of David C Epps of Sweet Home, late state Democratic chairman, has been established by Senator and Mrs Richard L Neuberger. The Neubergers said the money for the scholarship was from income he received for a recent article, "When I Learned I Had Cancer," he wrote for Harper's magazine. The senator specified that there shall be no religious, pol itical, color or sex limitations on applicants for the scholarship. Peter Gunnar, State GOP Chief and Senator Neuberger ev idently know all about gas and mileage. They are having an ante-over newspaper scrap, ac cusing one another of various small-time practices. Percentage wise Gunnar is getting the most publicity, which he can use, while Senator Neuberger never gets off page one. On Sunday, Mr and Mrs Phil Blakney were in Walla Walla for a day of golfing.
