lone Garden Club Hears Report on National Meeting By ECHO PALMATE ER The lone Garden club met at the city park Tuesday afternoon July 14 with Mrs Dale Ray and Mrs Frances Piper as hostesses. At the business meeting conduc ted by Mr Fredrick Martin, pres ident, members were asked to gather material to be dried for corsages for the November meet ing and to gather beardless wheat and lacquer it to be used "Nine Tenths Of Wisdom Consists Of Being Wise In Time" Wisdom is the ability to fudge the facts and do the rights thing at the proper time. For the Droeram, Mrs Etta Hus ton gave a very interesting re port on a 30 day trip she took this spring. She attended the National Federation of Garden clubs convention in St Louis, Mo where she saw the dedication of the national Garden club Foundation; She went to Chat tanoogo, Tenn; attended the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky: went through the Ozarks and to Richmond, Va. Guests at the meeting were, Mrs Marlon Palmer, Mrs Rod MacKenzie, Mrs Wate Crawford, Mrs Anna M Ball, Mrs Arvilla Swanson and Mrs Mary Swan son. Mrs Anna Lindstrom re ceived the door prize. The H E C of Willows grange held their meeting at Stefani's Friday afternoon, July 17. A lun cheon was served before the meeting. At the business meet ing conducted by Mrs Harvey Ring, president, it was decided to have the grange picnic in the city park, August 16 with a pot luck dinner at noon. The grange will furnish the ice cream, cof fee and punch. The grange booth at the Morrow County Fair was discussed. It was reported tnat an oil furnace had been install ed in the grange hall, also new blinds had been purchased for the windows. Mrs Lloyd Howton received the door prize. The hos tesses were Mrs Kathryn Yarnell, Mrs Stella O'Meara and Mrs Echo Palmateer. At the Bunchgrass Rebekah lodge meeting Thursday even ing of last week it was decided that the Rebekah lodge have a picnic for their family and friends, August 9 with a picnic dinner at noon in the city park. Mrs Omar Rietmann showed slides on the Rebekah Assembly and I 0 O F Home. Refresh ments were served by Mrs Adon Hamlett and Mrs Paul Pettyjohn. The Darsts other sons, Dick and Leonard are work ing here during harvest. Ernest McCabe who is working in a meat market at Bay City spent the weekend here. Jack Loyd of Heppner has been hired to teach the 6th grade in I the lone schools. I Mr and Mrs Irwin Elder of i Arlington and Mr and Mrs Dick Lindgren of Scappoose spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Rod MacKenzie. Ray Heimbigner and son, Tom my, and niece, Judy Frlnk, re turned horn Sunday from Med ford where they attended the Oregon State open water skll meet. Heimbigner won 1st in the men's slalom race, novice class. Tommy and Judy entered the slalom races but did not place. Juanita Nichols of Odessa, Wash is staying at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Ray Heimbigner assisting with the work during harvest. Funeral services were held for Louis Jackson, July 20 in Van Nys Calif. He died July 15 at at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Rev and Mrs Floyd Bailey in Weiser, Idaho. He made his home with them here for two years when Rev Bailey was pastor of the Com munity church. They moved to Weiser in April. Mr Jackson was an " active church worker and was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge and the Patriarch Milli tant. He is survived b his daugh ter, Mrs Bailey, two grandsons and 4 great grandchildren. Bruce and John spent a week at Mt Tacoma. iAhn Rrvson fell at the home nt his son. Huston Bryson in Portland one day last week and fractured his arm. Mr finrdon White's father. Oscar Shifter of Forest Grove was injured recently when a tractor rolled on him while spraying his orchard. His shoulder blade and arm were broken and his leg injured. He is in me nospuai in Hlllsboro. Swimmin? lessons are beine given at the pool each Wednes day and Friday morning witn Amio Hedman as instructor. The intermediates have lessons at 9 A M and the beginners at 10 A M. Sue Townsend was a recent visitor at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs Fred Jen kinson at Carson, Wash. Mr and Mrs Frank Helina and son, John, of Seattle visited her mother, Mrs Anna Lindstrom last week. Trova Rigby, daughter of Mr and Mrs Grant Rigby, attended the Episcopal church camp at Cove the past week. Mr and Mrs L A McCabe and daughters and Mr and Mrs Leo Crabtree and son, Ronnie, recent ly went fishing at East Lake where they caught their limit. Guests at the Lloyd Howton home last week were, Mr and Mrs Grover Estes and Lily Dun ton of Hayward, Calif and Mr and Mrs Virgil Estes of Lewis ton, Idaho. The theme will be Centen nial and members are asked to wear Centennial clothes. Mr and Mrs Henry Crane and children of Roseburg spent the weekend at the Wallace Mat thews home. Leonard Gaarsland and son, Ray, of Battle Lake, Minn, are visiting at the home of his bro ther, and family, Mr and Mrs Joe Gaarsland. They are also working in harvest. Bonnie Morgan, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Morgan, was a patient in the Pioneer Mem orial hospital for a few days. Mrs Franklin Ely who is at tending summer school at Port land State, spent the weekend at home. Her granddaughter, Mar lene Crawford returned to Port land with her to spend a couple Monument News The state forest office here re ports for the week, one man made fire; Friday evening on the Arlot Fleming ranch, grass; also a week ago on the George Stub blefield ranch, grass and toilet started by a smoker. They are busy laying a tile floor in the Ritter lookout tower. L D Vinson has taken over Aub ery Crum's job with the state. Mrs Joe Mellor and children of Dayton, Wash, came In Fri day night. They brought George Kirk home. He had been visiting them since the 4th of July. They drove to Kinzua Saturday to vis it her folks, the Lee Flemings, returning to Monument Monday evening and on to their home on Tuesday, taking Miss Marilyn Lewis home after her visit with her grandparents, the Bud Eng les. Mr and Mrs Ansel Martin of Prlnevllle visited his folks Wed nesday. Gary Allen of Ritter lookout had an accident Wednesday ev ening when his pistol, which was in the scabbard on his side, went off hurting his leg. He is in the John Day hospital.
