Evening service 7:30 p.m. By Jackie It should be ice tea weather by now, but all the ingredients in this "cup" are still being brewed under winter conditions. Furthermore, If these adverse conditions (meaning the wind, rain, and swampy fairways) don't change, I think I will hiber nate until this "winter" Is over. But dospite this atmospheric agony, there are still a few fear less females who like the per verbial mailman (neither rain, snow . . . . ) never falter in their desire to get their golf ball through. Tuesday we held our ladies day competition as usual, despite a drenching downpour before tee off time. Cork and I are in charge of ladies day act ivities for the month of July, so for our first Tuesday we had the gals play the entire course with just one club. Most every one chose a No 3 or a No 5 iron and did much better than we had expected ... the only real diffi culty seemed to be in the put ting. To add a little salt to the wound" everyone was blind folded when they teed off of No 6. (Which proved to be quite hilarious at times.) I luckily shot low gross of 46, and Sue Valentine and Vi tied for low score of 6 on the hidden hole which was the long No 6 . . . and blindfolded at that. PARTEE LINE PICKUPS: Cathy really had a stroke of luck on No 6; our foursome all laid about 25 yards out from the green, Cathy approached first (at a high rate of speed) luckily hit the flag and bounced back to the edge of the green, then I approached and lit on the green and knocked Cathy's ball a little closer to the cup, then Sue Val entine approached, lit on the green and hit Cathy's ball al most into the cup. (Guess Bonnie was mad at her, for she ap proached and didn't knock her ball into the cup, let alone hit her.) .... heard that Vivian missed one hole completely . . . I have heard more golfers say they wish we could use the fair way, now not in use, as the No 9 hole (just a thought I would pass on to the powers that be) ... . It seems like I am "scraping the bottom of the tee cup" any more to find something to write about. I guess everyone is getting so good they just don't get into trouble or make any hilarious mistakes. And the men are even "worse"; I never hear of, or see them making any "golf type" mistakes. Until the golfing con ditions get better or in this case "worse" I will have to write the bare facts without amusing ad libbing. But there is always an other day, so we'll hope for the best. As OSC extension farm crops specialist, Jackman blazed the trail for many of Oregon's major agricultural advances. He person ified the "field worker" exten sion specialist, taking his teach ings out to farm meetings and tours, visiting remote farms and crossroads throughout Oregon. He joined Oregon extension service in 1920 and has been most closely identified with the state's grassland and wheat pro grams. He helped develop Ore gon's multi-million dollar grass seed industry, promoted face lifting of eastern Oregon's range lands through sagebrush remov al and seeding of grasses and grazing alfalfas, and has been a strong advocate of pasture im provement programs throughout Oregon. He taught common-sense far ming practices with a blend of agricutural science, humor, and philosophy and with keen in sight for the right crop for the right piece of land and circum stances, college leaders noted. A skillful writer with the hu man interest touch, he widened his circle of Influence with art icles in many regional and nat ional magazines. His under standing of Oregon its people and its resources underlay all his teachings of new and better ways of farming. Early in the 1920's for example, Jackman encouraged trial plant ings of crested wheatgrass that was destined to seed millions of U S acres in the 1930's during the wheat reduction programs. He helped put Oregon grass seed growers a decade ahead of the rest of the country with improved methods and recently set the stage for further Oregon range development with some 125 grazing alfalfa trials in eastern Oregon. 4-H Club News IONE COOKERETTES The lone Cookerettes had a Mothers Tea at the home of Mar ilyn Morgan, June 18. Each of the girls had a dem onstration. Karen Hams made some brownies, Marjorie O'Con nor made an orange float, Marl lee Leathers set the table and Susan Lindstrom made an apple crisp.
