Hepwek Gazette-Times Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April 30, 1959 lone High Holds Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet By ECHO PALMATEER The Junior-Senior banquet and prom were held at the school Saturday evening, April 25. The program at the banquet consis ted of the invocation by Father J P Gaire; welcome by Melvin Martin, president of the junior class; response by John How ton, president of the senior class; music, the theme song, April in Paris by the junior girls; class will by Kenneth Jones; class prophecy by John Howton; guest speaker, Dr Frank Bennett pres ident of the Eastern Oregon Col lege of Education and the ben ediction by Rev J W Riley. Members of the P-TA served the banquet with Mrs Raymond Lundell as chairman. Soph omores waiting on the tables, were Linda Hams, Marilyn Mor gan, Judy Morgan, JoAnn Tur ner, Bob Rice, John Swanson, Francis Rea and Jack Crum. They wore French waiter out fits. The prom was held in the old gym with decorations carry ing out the theme "April in Paris." In front was a large painting of the Siene River and other scenes in Paris. On one side of the gym was a cabaret with a brick wall background and a brick fence in front, an awning and round tables. A real fountain played over rocks in one end of the gym and there were many spring flowers. Gene Rietmann's orchestra furnished the music. Leann Padberg and Paul Pettyjohn were crowned queen and king of the prom. The crowns were presented by Mel vin Martin and Karen Lundell. The train bearers were Gene Crowell and Maryann Williams, and the crown bearers were Terry Cannon and Sandra Carl son. Punch were served during the evening by Arleta McCabe, Cher yle Lundell, Judy Sherer and Katherine Rea. They wore French waitress's outfits. Mr and Mrs Bryce Keene gave a birthday party in honor of their daughter, Kathy, Sunday, April 26. She was 9 years old. A dinner was served at noon and the show in Heppner was enjoyed in the evening. Guests present were the third grade girls. They were Merrilee Jacobs, Terry O'Connor, tMaureen Mc Elligott, Marlene Crawford, Jan ice Snider, Janet Palmateer, Betty Hausler, and Susan Hams and their teacher, Mrs Allie Al bertson and Mr and Mrs Arthur Keene and Mrs Loy McFerrin. Mrs Garland Swanson and Mrs Adon Hamlett gave a party Sun day, April 26 at the Rebekah hall in honor of the 8th birth day of their children, Jim Swan son and Sharlene Hamlett. Others present were Teresa and Tanya Tucker, Bonnie Akers, Bonnie Morgan, Joyce Howton, Kathy' Shockly, Judy Esteb Linda Williams, Teresa Stefanl, Jodine Snow, Mark Tullis, Paul Proudfoot, Tom McEl 1 i g o 1 1, Frank Halvorsen, Ronnie Pal mateer, and Richard Hamlett. A picnic dinner was served at noon and games were played. Jimmy Boyce, son of Mr and Mrs Ray Boyce, underwent sur gery on his toes at the Pioneer Memorial hospital Monday. Mr and Mrs W G Seehafer of Boardman and Mrs Duane Essex of Sacramento, California were visitors here last week. Ernest Drake was with the team from Pacif ic. Mrs Linda Richardson of Port land was a weekend guest at the Paul Pettyjohn home. Her mo ther, Mrs Richardson and fam ily spent the weekend at the Gordon White home. Mrs Doris Gollyhorn reported that her son, Wayne, is a pa tient in a hospital in Guam. He is in the Air Force. Mr and Mrs Ernest Heliker spent the weekend at their mountain home. Mrs Leo Crabtree and Mrs Al vin McCabe and son, Ashley, were Salem visitors last week. Mrs Crabtree's mother, Mrs Blanche Scheelar and nephew, James Scheelar, of Salem re turned home with them. Other guests at the Crabtree home last week were her brother and fam ily, Mr and Mrs Larry Scheelar and David and Debbie of Eu gene. Mrs Gene Hall entertained the bridge club at her home Friday evening of last week. Those re ceovlng prizes were Mrs Pete Cannon, high; Mrs Robert Jep sen, 2nd high and Mrs Ernest McCabe, low. Mr and Mrs Paul Pettyjohn entertained members of the choir of the Community church Monday evening of last week in honor of Rev and Mrs Floyd Bailey. The Baileys were presen ted with a lamp. TO Attend Girls' State Paula Barak, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Barak, was chosen as a delegte to Girl's State at the American Legion Auxiliary meeting at the Legion hall Tues day evening of last week. She is a junior in the lone high school. Girls are chosen on their character, leadership, scholar ship, cooperativeness, physical fitness, horfesty and courage. At the meeting paper flowers were made for the wheel chair parade at the Veteran'h hospital in Port land, .also, poppy corsages were made. The hostesses were Mrs Cecil Thorne and Mrs Gordon White. At the business meeting, con ducted by Mrs Thorne, chairman, copies of blueprints of the lone cemetery plots were presented by Mrs David Rletmann. Mr and Mrs Rletmann and Mrs Thorne have been working on these. May 16 was set for clean up day at the cemetery. This is a commun ity project. A potluck dinner will be served the workers at the Rebekah hall at noon. Commit tees appointed were, dinner, Mrs Charles O'Connor, Mrs Mary Swanson and Mrs E R Lundell; tables, Mrs Wallace Matthews, Mrs Thorne and Mrs Ernest Hel iker; clean up, Mrs Echo Pal mateer, Mrs Fannie Griffith and Mrs Ida Coleman. Mrs Heliker read a letter that she wrote and was sending to the Rebekah lodge in lone, Washington tell ing of the lodge here and its work and history. Cards were played after the meeting and those receiving prizes were Mrs Palmateer, high; Mrs Mary Swanson, low, Mrs Paul Petty john received the door prize. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Adon Ham lett. Mr and Mrs Earl Eskelson of Hermlston visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Ewing Hynd in Cecil last week. Mr and Mrs Orlin Spaulding of Arlington was visitors at the O L Lundell home last week. Recent visitors at the Ray Bar nett home were their son and family, Mr and Mrs Joel Barnett and children and Mr and Mrs Charles Nord of Portland. Those from Locust chapter of the Eastern Star who attended Friendship night at the Ruth chapter in Heppner Friday even ing of last week were, Mrs Omar Rietmann, Mrs James Barnett, Mrs James Lindsay, Mrs Sam Esteb, Mrs Roy Lindstrom, Mr and Mrs Charles O'Connor, Mr and Mrs William Smethurst and Mr and Mrs Millard Nolan. College students home over the weekend were Sharon Cutsforth, Mardine Baker and Larry Riet mann from the University of Oregon; Loy Keen, Ann Belle Coleman, Paul Miller and Keith Rea from Oregon Tech at Klam Psl Morrow hi : I ath Falls. Mrs Keith Rea and son accompanied them. Berl Akers from Pacific University, Kay Sherer from EOCE at La Grande. Visitors last week at the Fan nie Griffith home were her son, George Griffith of McDermott, Nevada and her niece, Mrs Wil liam Loos of Orcas Island, Wash. Mrs Griffith and Mrs Loos left Saturday for McDermitt to visit the George Griffiths. Mrs Fannie Griffith and Mrs A W McLeod called later in the afternoon. Lt LeRoy Brenner of Moses Lake Air base in Washington spent a few days with his par ents, Mr and Mrs C E Brenner last week. He Just returned from Amarilla, where he took further training. Dr Frank Bennett, president of Eastern Oregon College of Edu cation in LaGrande gave the ser mon at the Community church Sunday morning. He was accom panied by Mrs Bennett. They were weekend guests at the Fred Martin home. Mrs Allie Albertson spent the weekend in LaGrande. This Is a com munity project. Open house was held at the Stefani's Fine Foods and the Harvest Room Saturday evening, April 25. A French buffet dinner was served and three floor shows were held during the evening by the Whtppoorwllls, a girls' trio from Portland who were chosen as the Centennial Sweet hearts there. The Royal Dukes orchestra of Pendleton furnished the music. The rooms were decorated with flowers given the Stefanis. Mrs Norman Nelson is attending the P-TA State con vention in Corvallis this week as a delegate from the lone P-TA. Members of the lone Garden club who are replanting their perennials will have extras available for any one desiring them. The proceeds will go to the Garden club. Those having these perennials are: Mrs Harold Dobyns has dahlias; Mrs Edith Nichoson has chrysanthemums (named and unnamed) and Shasta daisies; Mrs William Rawlins has 100 different var ieties and dahlias; Mrs Fredrick Martin has chrysanthemums (named and unnamed), Esther Reed daisies and columbine; Mrs Elbe Akers has Shasta daisies and raspberry bushes; Mrs Omar Rietmann has chrysanthemums, mlchaelmas daisies and day lilies.
