OREGON'S 100TH BIRTHDAY Governor Mark Hatfield gave a spiritual message at a Valen tine Day prayer breakfast, the first of a series of events cele brating the 100th anniversary of Oregon's statehood. More than a hundred clergymen and lay men of all faiths attended the breakfast at the Senator Hotel, Salem. The governor said. "I think it is proper that the commemora tion of our admission to state hood should begin with this meditation. We have before us today a tremendous challenge, and great problems and decis ions are faced by the state and the nation. We need the guidance of religion." Three of Oregon's principal cities participated in individual istic ways in celebrating the state's centennial birthday: A prayer breakfast at Salem; first day sale and dedication of the 4 cent Oregon stamp at Astoria; ceremonies of pomp and pagen try at the Capitol when Vice President Nixon delivered an ad dress after a cavalcade of dig-n-ataries, headed by Nixon and Gov Mark Hatfield, had been escorted through the Capital City; the vice president and the governor then went to Portland Ralph I. Oregon's capital was not short of politics the past week. On Valentine's eve 250 Democrats attended a Democratic $10-a-plate dinner at the Marion Hotel where they applauded vigorous ly when U S Representative Chas O Porter told them his chief pro ject in the present session of Congress would be "to remove the embargo against trading with the Chinese. Nothing could mean more to Oregon's economy." He explained that the official U S policy toward dictators in Latin America is now changing, thanks in part to the riots dur-1 ing Nixon's visit and the later visit of Milton Eisenhower. i Speaking of the nation's cap-1 ital, Porter described Washing-' ton as a city of "alcohol and Geritol." OREGON RACING RUN OK Elaborate and thorough core Is being taken by the Oregon Racing Commission and it's staff to keep horse and Greyhound racing clean and attractive, ac cording to the findings of the Ways and Means Committee of the House, made Wednesday. Thaddeus B Bruno, commission chairman reported that Oregon agricultural fairs and other exhi bitions which share the revenues from racing have come to rely more upon their share of the re ceipts from racing. Cecil L Edwards, Super visor of Racing, demonstrated to the legislators a new race cam era that is final in judging "fin ishes," faults of jockeys, tem peramental horses and other in fringments in racing. The race can be run backwards or chang ed into slow motion. It takes 500-$2 bets to pay for the camera but it pays for it self, on an average, daily. Racing officials say they are not disturbed by the news that a bill in the Washington Legis lature to legalize racing, may result in racing in Vancouver.
