Monument News By MARTHA MATTESON (Too late for last week) Lillian Cox, daughter of So phia Cox Ayers, was here from her home in Arizona. Wednes day her mother brought her to visit with relatives and she stay ed with an uncle, Carl Cox, Sun day her folks, Mr and Mrs Clay ton Ayers of Lexington came after her. Harold and Alta Stevens came over from Hardman to stay with Mr Stevens at the Stanley Mus grave ranch so the Musgraves could go to the fair Saturday at John Day. Joe Herfard, and Dalton Wil helm have completed their year's work at the state forest office. Mr and Mrs Henry Martin, daughters Caroline, Margaret and Sharon Hinton went to John Day for the last day of the fair. Mr and Mrs Ike Shank of Mt Vernon visited Ellen Stubble field Sunday. Helen Holmes demonstrated her lroner to a group of wo men Wednesday at the Ellen Stubblefield home. Gerald Slocum drove to Her miston Tuesday to take in the stock sale. Heppner Gazette-Times Mr and Mrs Glenn Williams made a trip to Redmond last week. Helen Brown accompanied Mary Du Bosch to Heppner Mon day on business. Mrs Oleta Farrens drove Mrs Wave Jackson to Bend Monday for a checkup. Gerald Slocum and Maynard Hamilton drove Lee Slocum to Pendleton Monday on business. Mrs Bob Neel and Mrs Edna Moore left Tuesday morning for Portland. They returned Satur day. Mr and Mrs Cork left this past week to spend two or three weeks in the valley and on the coast. Mr and Mrs Ivan Gienger and daughter Sherry returned to their home in Spokane last week after spending some time with their parents, Mr and Mrs Bob Gienger on Cottonwood and Mr and Mrs Jim Harris of Long Creek. The Leasy family of Fox spent the weekend at their ranch on Cottonwood. Miss Alice Hills spent the weekend at the Bob Gienger home. Mrs Wilbur Flowers spent the past week at Prineville with her husband who works there. Forest Noland left Saturday for Portland on business. Hugh Howland of Chico, Calif spent the past week at the mar vA WEEK 6 T it Wayne Leathers home. They left Sunday for Portland. Mr and Mrs Wayne Leathers drove to Redmond Monday to meet her folks, Mr and Mrs Mar tin Cupper who had spent two weeks visiting at Chico, Calif with their granddaughter and family. Charles J Holmes who had liv ed off and on in Monument since 1946 passed away Wednesday at Arbuckle ridge near Heppner where he had spent most of the summer with the Ross Logging Co. He died from a heart at tack. He was married to his wife Lillian June 15, 1908 and they had celebrated their golden wed ding last June at the home of their son, Mr-and Mrs Charles "Bud" Holmes. He leaves his widow, two sons. Kenneth Holm es of Heppner; Charles L Holmes of Springfield; six daughters, Mrs Florence Groat, Salem; Mrs Waldo Hunter, Springfield; Mrs Myrtle Bryant, Bridge; Mrs Tom Ross, Heppner; Mrs Warren Crib bons, Bridge; and Mrs Delbert Stubblefield, Clackamas. There are also 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Salem.- Norris Stubblefield and Jack Sweek spent last week in Cor vallis attending meter school. They returned Saturday. Pauline Sweek drove to Mitch ell Friday with the Milt Mor gans rock hunting. Harley Matteson of Heppner came in Monday, then he and his neice, Mrs Harry Scott drove to Alturas, Calif Tuesday to visit her sister and brother-in-law, the Bob Kingman's and brother, L J Matteson. They returned here Saturday. There were 14 present. The hostesses were Caroline Martin, Deanna Leath ers, Sharon Hinton and Theo Vandetta. , Owen Smith, Lynn Forest and A C Owings went to Long Creek Saturday and hauled back the lumber that the Legion boys had taken from the Long Creek hall which had been turned over to the Monument post if its mem bers would tear it down and re move It. There is no longer a Legion post in Long Creek. The American Legion and Aux iliary held their meetings Thurs day at the Grange hall. There were 13 present. Harold Reynolds told about his trip to Boys State last June. Bob Holmes, district comman der, drove to Hood River Sept 20 for a Legion convention there. The Ivan Smith family have moved back to their home in Mitchell. They had been here since spring where he has been working in the woods. Mr and Mrs Ernie Johnson drove to Heppner Thursday on business. Grandma Jennie Gienger, who is looking forward to celebrat ing her 91st birthday in two weeks, made her first trip to the Grant county fair Saturday. Dean Hunt, Johnnie Ledbetter and Roger Campbell were Port land visitors one day last week. O G Breeding and son, Max are spending a few days in Port land. Paul Breeding, son of Mr and Mrs 0 G Breeding have been visiting his parents from his work in Eastern Oregon. Kathleen Waddill of Oregon City spent the weekend with her parents, Mr and Mrs Dale Wad dill. Miss Galyer 5th and 6th grade teacher spent the weekend at the home of her parents in Ontario, Oregon. Joan Patrick, daughter of Mrs Gladys Young, has gone to La Grande where she has enrolled in Eastern Oregon college. Mary Stroud of Greely, Colo is spending the winter with her aunt, Mrs E E Peck and attend ing school here.
