P W MAHONEY Attorney for Plaintiff Address: Heppner, Oregon 21-25c Hot Weather Brinqs Good-Bad Farm News Records Predicted Hot dry weather has brought mixed blessings to the Oregon larm scene ideal for some crops, but rough on pastures, small grains, and most seed crops, says M D Thomas, Oregon State col lege agricultural economist. Weather has also cut short the cane berry and bean season and has matured sweet corn sooner than expected, causing bunch ing at processing plants. The early hot spell in June reduced both quantity and quality 'of cer eal grains, particularly in wes tern Oregon. Despite these setbacks, total farm income in Oregon could hit a new high this year, Thomas believes. Near-perfect weather for corn, range forage, and many irrigated crops plus good prices CARD OF THANKS We want to thank all our nei ghbors and friends who assited us In controlling our fire Mon day. Prayer meeting, Wednesday, at 7:30 p m. USED CARS WITH AN for livestock have more than balanced out the weak spots. At the worst, cash returns seem lik ely to be second only to the farm income record of 1951, says the economist. Warm, frost free weather has been a real boon to all crops grown in the high eastern Ore gon country at elevations above 4,000 feet, reports E R Jackman, OSC range crops management specialist. Nationally, 1958 may go down as the best crop season in his tory. Production of wheat, barley, and soybeans now promises to set new records. Corn, grain sorg hums, and hay crops may be second largest on record. Pros pects for oats, potatoes, and su gar beets are also well above average. A record national crop would be doubly impressive, Thomas states, when considered it is be ing grown on the smallest acre age in 40 years. Also, the num ber of farm workers continues to decline. This summer, fewer than 7 million people are doing the farm work in the nation. Ten years ago, more than 9 million were working at farm jobs. Thus, crop output has increas ed about 13 percent during the past 10 years while the number of people working on farms has decreased by 30 percent, the economist notes. week.
