GOP STRATEGY MEETING Resoonding to a call made by Secretary of State Mark Hatfield about 150 persons, including w Renublican candidates, met at. Salem's American Legion Hall Saturday afternoon and heard thp Reiiub can candidate icr governor outline his position on the more Important campaign is-, sues. Secretary Hatfield empha-! sized that he was speaking only for their information and not try ing to dictate what their posit ions should be. Almost half the 10o men were legislators or re cent members of the legislature. Reports were made on recent activities of several legislative committees. The meeting ended with dist rict sessions on local problems. Some 50 women attended a separate meeting in the hall for wives of candidates. SECRET VOTE ON STRIKE A suggestion that both sides in the construction strike deadlock in Portland should consider a sec ret ballot vote on an armistice was madp early this week by Secretary of State Mark Hatfield. Hatfip d said he was maKing the suggestion, "as a friendly npntra 1 interested in the well being of the many families of our state affected by tne worn dplav" Should the men vote lor an armistice bv secret ballot, Hat field pointed out, work could be mod and upward payroll ad justments could be made later depending upon negotiations. A GREATER STATE FAIR The Joys of camping at the Oregon State Fair have made a evcle of nearly 100 years, be ginning with the days of the co vered wagon drawn by oxen to the rjresent $50,000 two-iamuy trailer mansions, with swimming pools. A new trailer Dark in the oak grove near the Livestock Build- intr will be one of the new fea tures at the Greater Oregon State Fair. A new sewer line has oeen laid and there will be water and electric connection for 70 trailer houses. These spaces will be ren ted at $1 a day to concessionaires and exhibitors. Another new feature is the re location of the picnic grounds in the shady grove on the west end of the Fairgrounds, near tne main line of the Southern Pa cific. This was the location of the main entrance in years past when most fairgoers arrived by hussps. streetcars or railroad. In reversing a judgement which awarded $12,217 t0 a wo- man who slipped at an Oregon City hospital while visiting her husband.
