Winter Feed Program For Cattle Brings Profits in Test Ranchers in the high desert range country of Eastern Oregon may be able to find new pro fits in wintering beef cattle, ac cording to scientists at the Ore gon State college agricultural ex periment station. Phosporous-fertilized flood mpadow hav plus protein supple ment proved the key to faster winter gains In trials last winter at the Squaw uutte-Harney branch experiment station at Burns. The station Is operated Jointly by the OSC agricultural experiment station and the USDA agricultural research service. The wintering feed program is now regaraea largely as a "maintenance" operation, hold ing steers for grass-finishing on range the next summer. Weaner steer calves on a xii dav winter feed DrSgram gained 33 pounds more when fed phos phorous-fertilized hay wan ani mals on unfertilized hay, report ed Farris Hubbert, animal scien tist at the branch station, Phos nhnrous fertilizer Increases the white-tip clover content of flood- maadow hav. resulting in both higher crude protein and phos phorous content of the hay, ne explained. Addition of one pound or cottonseed meal dally to unfer tilized hay rations produced 37 pounds more gain than unfer tilized hay alone. But the big boost came from a combination of the cottonseed meal and phos- phorous-fert 1 1 1 z e d hay 80 nounds more gain than with un fertilized hav during the 132-day triaL All animals received two pounds of barley daily. Valuing steers at 23 cents a pound, winter gains netted $5.41 above feed costs for animais on iinfprtlH7Pd hav: S10.31 for un fertilized hay plus cottonseed mpal: $14.06 for phosphorous- fertilized hay; and $21.19 with the combination of fertilized hay and cottonseed ceal, Hubbert said. In addition to boosting clover content of the meadow hay, ap plication of 40 pounds of phos phorous (P205) per acre increas ed hay yields about three fourths of a ton per acre. The feedlne trials, however,! measured only quality of hay and didn't Include Increased pro fits per acre from total hay yields. Hubbert said all animals ate the same amounts of hay. Main difference was the levels . . ., 1 !,,, V,-r,ie or cruae proiem eu jjiivi' ., . , r , 4....- invniianip in me two ivyca w available in the two types of hay. t Calves fed uniertinzea nay riifin't rpppive sufficient phos phorous to meet "recommended allowances," Hubbert explained, pven thoueh phosphorous sup- nipmpnt was available 'free choice" in a salt and bonemeal mix. Addition of one pound daily of cottonseed meal brought the unfertilized hay up to adequate phosphorous levels, fertilized hay, due to clover content, met phosphorous requirements witn nut addition of cottonseed meal. Importance of phosphorous for range cows in tne sageorusn hnnoh crass reeion was also re ported by R R Wheeler, animal researcher at the branch station. Phosphorous supplements avnllahlp at all times in the form of bonemeal and disodium nhosphate resulted in about two- weeks earlier average conception rlntpa fur ranee cows and a I slight increase in the number of calves born. Wheeler said. Fur ther studies are planned to see if higher levels or pnospnorous supplement intake by cows may increase birth weight ana wean ing weight of calves.
