CAPITAL PARADE (Continued rrom page 2) POLITICAL TEMPO SLOW This is just a breathing spell for the Monday morning politi cal quarterbacks. Next week when the primary election returns have been re checked and the vote by coun ties has been tabulated, the real fine combing statistics will re veal whose political fleas hop ped on whom. The top analytical poser is in the First Congressional District, where Walter Norblad made a decisive victory in the primaries just as he has for the past seven consecutive biennial elections. Oregon Republicans are dis turbed over their only represen tative in the congress. Norblad's leads over his Democratic op ponents have been slipping for the past six years. In 1952 he won over Robert Jones (Dem) with a majority of 65,924. ' In 1954 his lead over Dan Mitchell (Dem) was 40,710. In 1956 Jason Lee (Dem) cut Walter's lead to 18,793. Just now there are no meas uring sticks for the gubernator ial race between incumbent Ro bert D Holmes and Secretary of State Mark Hatfield. STATE PIONEER MUSEUM The Oregon State Fair Board is keenly interested in creating a pioneer museum on the Fair grounds by refurbishing the "Parsonage" built as the nucleus of Salem in 1842, before Salem was Salem and before Oregon country was American territory. In this building, still standing in Salem in comparitively good preservation, there were held the strategy meetings Which were successful in securing the Amer icanization of the "New North west." Bert Brown Barker, Oregon his torian of note, names the "Par sonage" as the oldest public building west of Fort Kearney, Kansas. Plans call for furnishing it accurately, as it was in the days of its builders, the early trail-breaking pioneers. No elec tricity or gas, not even kerosene Just candle sticks, whale oil lamps, knot hole bootjacks and other ingenuous appliances that were mothered by necessity. All intriguing to this pushbutton age. ADVERTISING CENTENNIAL Coquille's mayor and Oregon's governor have combined efforts to put a rolling show of the state's position in the lumber in dustry on the road. Governor Holmes said Thurs day he had been advised that George Burr, mayor of Coquille and owner of the local lumber company, had answered his ap peal for loan of a log truck and log for Oregon Jaycees to parade in Los Angeles at the National Junior Chamber of Commerce convention later this month. The loe truck and its six-foot- thick, 32-foot long Douglas Fir log was displayed in front of the Oregon Capital Sunday be fore beginning its journey to Los Aneeles June 12. Enroute it will be displayed at San Francisco for a day. TEACH OUT-OF-DOORS With the "Let's Teach in the Out-of-Doors'V leaders so timely, we quote what Luther Burbank once said: "Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water lilies, wood chucks, bats, bees, butter flies, various animals to pet, havfields. oine cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets. Any child that has been deprived of the best part of these has been deprived of the best part of his education." Students Chosen For Summer Institute OREGON STATE COLLEGE Stevan Flug and Renn Harris of Heppner have been selected to attend the third annual Junior Engineers and Scientists Sum mer Institute, June 15 to 28, at Oregon State college. Renn is the son of Mr and Mrs Mike Saling and Stevan is the son of Mr and Mrs Jack Flug. Both will be seniors in Heppner high school next year. Students must demonstrate high scholarship and be recom meded by their high school principals to apply. The JESSI program, first start ed in Oregon, has now been adopted across the nation. The program is sponsored by Scien tists of Tomorrow, a Portland corporation formed to promote educational activities in science.
