Bumble Bees Fade Away in Oregon; Crop Value Noted OREGON STAT0 COLLEGE The colorful and valuable bum ble bees that once were among the state's leading crop pollin ators before wide-spread use of chemical sprays are now disa ppearing .from some sections of Oregon and Western America, ac cording to an Oregon State col lege entomologist's study of the king-sized bee. Dr W P Stephen has found bumble bees all but gone from intensive farming areas where sprays are used constantly to check destructive pests. j Some still remain along the coast and in other sections of open land where their ground i nests are not exposed to sprays In those areas, they are partic ularly useful as pollinators of cranberries, blueberries, and red clover. They are more effective than honey bees on red clover and blueberries and honey bees do not like the cool, wet condit ions under which cranberries grow. While the decline of the bum ble boe can't be helped or halt ed, it can be "lamented," Stephen said, and every attempt made to check indiscriminate spraying that uselessly kills off wild bees. Honey bees are protected by mov ing them in and out of spray areas, he noted. Stephen recently published a technical bulletin on bumble bees of Western America and has been given a $9,500 grant by the National Science Foundation to continue work for another three years. He plans eventually to compile data on bumble bees of the world. The tiling that makes some bumble bees particularly effect ive as pollinators is their long tongues, Stephens said. The three-jointed tongue is some time as long as the bee's body and twice as long as the tongue of the honey bee. Twenty-four species of bumble bees are found in Oregon. Desert ed mice nests are favorite homes for the bees and the big build up in mice this year may mean more bumble bees next summer, Stephen believes. All but new queen bumble bees die with the first frost each fall. The queen overwinters and builds the col ony. Bumble bees vary greatly in behavior and color. Some are vicious, others docile. Unlike the honey bee, the bumble bee can sting more than once. In Oregon, they are mostly yellow and black. The State withheld all shipments until affected fruit could be recognized nnd destroyed. You'll find fixing Florida grapefruit halves or sectioning the whole fruit for use in salads and fruit cups really a cinch if you use the right tools for the task good sharp paring knives. Experts seem to agree on a short, straight hlade-1 knife for separating the fruit from the dividing membranes in h&'ves. If you like the seeded fruit (and many people prefer it) but not the chore of removing the seeds, cut around the seeds, removing them with the core from the center. To section the whole fruit, peel like an apple, and then cut from the outside down to the core with a knife blade about 5 or 6 inches long; slip out section by pulling knifn back along next membrane.
