Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday, December 19, 1957 lone Sorority Accepts Budget Tho December business meet ing of Beta Omega chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha was held Wednesday, December 4 at the home of Eulenna Corley. The 1957-58 budget was pre sented by the budget committee, Eileen Padberg, Melba Miller, Ro setta Palmateer, Marilyn Riet mann and Gladys Heliker, and was accepted. It was decided to send a con trlbutibn to the E.S.A. disaster fund and also planned to serve the banquet for the 4-H leaders on January 7. After the business meeting, Ir ene Leathers read an entertain ing poem, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", by Dr. Seuss; Christ mas decorations made by the members were displayed. Hostesses for the evening were Betty Hausler, Eulenna Corley and Mary McLeod. CALLING ALL BOYS AND GIRLS . to the Star Theater's Annual Free Christmas Show, Saturday Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. Free candy given by Elks lodge. Feature picture is "Boys' Town" 0?EN mm UNTIL EVERY NIGHT UNTIL CHRISTMAS STiLL HUNDREDS OF LAST MINUTE GIFTS HEPPNER VARIETY Rebekahs to Hold Christmas Party On December 20 Noble Grand Esther Bergstrom presided as Sans Soucl Rebekah members held their regular busi ness meeting Dec. 6. It was voted to donate to the TB Christmas Seal drive. Noble Grand elect Hazel Bau man and vice grand elect Betty Rood gave some memory work, Dorothy Edwards and Leona Mc Lachlin were elected to member ship by transfer. The lodge was presented with the gift of an el ectric mixer by Eugenia Huston. The quarterly birthday party and annual Christmas tree with exchange of gifts will follow a brief business meeting Friday, Dec. 20 at the hall. All Rebekahs, Odd Fellows and their families are invited to attend. Rainbow Reception And Dance Slated Saturday Evening The Heppner chapter of Rain bow for Girls will hold a recep tion Saturday, Dec. 21 for Phyllis Quackenbush, grand representat ive to the state of North Caro lina. The reception will be held in the Odd Fellows hall and will start at 8 p.m. Following the reception the an nual formal Snowball dance will be held at the IOOF hall. Friends and the public are invited to both events. Harry Bongers Tells Soroptimists About Holland Harry Bongers, administrator of Pioneer Memorial hospital, spoke to the Soroptimist club Thursday noon at O'Donnell's about his native Holland. He told of the geographical structure of the country and spoke of some of the industries. After he gave his talk he answered questions asked by the club mem bers. Beulah Davis was the senior girl representative to the meeting. Duplicate Club Meets At Gribble Home Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Gribble entertained the Duplicate bridge club at their home Sunday ev ening. Playing were Mr. and Mrs. Gor don Pratt, Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne VanMarter Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Rich ard T. Meador, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas I. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Blakney, Dr. and Mrs. Wal lace Wolff, Mr. and Mrs, Clinton McQuanie and the hosts. Couple achieving the highest score was composed of Mrs. Gribble and Dr. Wolff, second high Mrs. Wil son and Mrs. Wolff. Two Birthdays Feted At Bridge Party Mrs. LaVerne VanMarter Jr. en- tertined with a bridge party Thursday honoring the birthdays of Mrs. Pete Cannon of lone and Mrs. Eugene Hall of Heppner. Present were Mrs. Howard Bryant, Mrs. Dick Wilkinson, Mrs. Don Bellenbrock, Mrs. Kemp Dick, Mrs. Oscar George, Mrs. Wallace Wolff and Mrs. James Mallon of Heppner; Mrs. Robert Jepsen, Mrs. Robert DeSpain and Mrs. Del mer Crawford of lone, the honor -ees and hostess. , High score was won by Mrs. George, second by Mrs. Wilkin son. Poinsettias were used by the hostess for both prizes and birth day gifts. Decorations carried out the Christmas theme. Carnation Club to Decorate Trees The carnation club held its Christmas party in conjunction with its regular monthlv meet ing Thursday evening at the home oi Mrs. K. G. McMurtry. Secret pals were revealed. Christmas trees are to be dec orated for the elder patients at Pioneer Memorial hospital and re freshments were served by Mrs. Theta Stratton and Ida Sue Strat ton and the hostess. Extension Sewing Classes Completed The closing home extension sewing class on childs play clothes was held at the home of Mrs. C. E. Brenner, lone, Thurs day evening, Dec. 12. Those takin advantage of th course of lessons were Mrs. Roy Lindstrom, Mrs. Howard Crowell, Mrs. Charles Hudson, Mrs. James Barnett, Mrs. Pat Doherty, Mrs. Roger Kincaid, Mrs. Elmer Holtz, Mrs. Adon Ham lett, Mrs. Art Warren Mrs. Delmer Crawford and Mrs. David McLeod. Another similar class will be gin In January, the date to be de cided later. There will be no charge for the lessons, and anyone interested may contact Mrs. Har old Snider or Mrs. C. E. Brenner, instructors. Many Attend Yule Season Open House Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Gribble and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McQuarrie entertained Saturday evening,8 until 10:30 p.m. with a Christ mas open house at the Gribble home. The rooms were lovely with decorations of the Yule Season, and Craols were playing for the 100 guests that called during the evening. Final Rites Held At Monument By Martha Matteson Final rites were held In Long Creek on Tuesday, Dec. 10 for Jess Bernard Hyke, who died at his home in Ritter, Dec. 7, while sorting the mail. Death was caus ed by a heart attack. He was born March 2, 1903 in Hill county Michigan. He had spent the great er part of his life in Grant county, in Monument for many years. He is survived by his widow, Ruby Hyke, Ritter; his mother, Mary Hyke, Monument; one brother in Portland, one son, Clifford, Pilot Rock, and one daughter, Mrs. De lano Johnson, Seattle. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Ogle are mov ing back to their ranch on Serv ice Creek soon from the ranch on the mountain. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cavender and three girls have moved from Ham ilton to below Monument to the old Lynn Forrest place. Airman Floyd Vaughan return ed by plane to Germany last week after spending a month here visit ing his mother Mrs. Bill Gienger, and other relatives and friends. Lyle "Happy" William Cork, who drove truck and U.S. Mail stage for about 20 years, passed away at Heppner Monday even ing, Dec. 9. He was born in Caton, South Dakota, August 14, 1911. He had spent most of his life here in Grant county and serv ices were held Friday afternoon, December 13. Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Earl "Fayr" Sweek, Ridgefield, Wash.; four brothers, Erlin E., Roseburg; Clayton, Salem; Dar rell O., Burns; and Owen, Port land. Rev. Albert Chan officiated at the service and pallbearers were Stanley Musgrave, Roy Cork, Har old Cork, Rho Bleakman, Carl Cox and Arlet Flemings. Mrs Harold j Cork sang a solo, accompanied by Mrs. Pat Chan at the piano and the choir, composed of Gail Hall, Pat Chan, Oneda Cork, Reta Cup per, Don Ayers and Wayne Lea thers, sang "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown". Among his relatives here were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sweek, all four of his brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Musgraves of Mt. Vernon, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton H. Sweek of Spring field and many more relatives and friends. Creswick Mortuary of Heppner had charge of arrangements. PI ELUTA CAMP FIRE GIRLS We had our mothers' tea Tues day, Dec. 10 at the home of Mrs. Victor Kreimeyer. Guests present other than our mothers were Miss Marguerite Glavey and Mrs. Grace Schmidt. We sang two song games. "This Old Man" and " "Shoo Fly Shoo". Vicki Kriemey er Lynn Burkenbine, Karen Mc Murdy and Vicky Barratt sang "Gonna Find Me A Blue Bird." Each girl received her honor beads. At the close of our Christ mas party we all sang Christmas carols. Refreshments were served by several of the girls. Barratt. Mrs. Farley Hostess For Christmas Party Mrs. James J. Farley was host ess for the Christmas party of the Ronegers' bridge club at her home last Wednesday. There was an exchange of gifts.
