Continued from Page 2 A lot of work has been done by many state colleges and com mercial feed handlers on the value of hay made into pellets. Recently Oregon State college summarized some of the known information. First they listed the advantages; Jess feed wasted, less hauling and storage space, less labor, mechanical handling and possibly more dry matter eaten. Experiments show that increas ed rate of gain on less total feed has been demonstrated for lambs and yearling steers. Illinois re ports timothy-alfalfa mixed pel eted hay fed free choice to calves resulted in 50 more dry matter eaten and 90 more gain per ton of feed over either baled or chopped hay. Ohio reports Increased gain in dairy calves when fed a pelleted coarse ground hay and grain mixture. Pelleted hay takes about one half the space of bale hay and fifth the space of chopped hay. Listed as disadvantages were: cost, no commercial machines now avail able for large pellets of coarse chopped hay. Dairy cows fed ground pelleted hay had a greatly reduced butterfat test. There is a lot of interest now fn a machine to pellet hay in the field. California has done some work along this line; capacity and cost are the main problems. More technical information on feeding, rates of gain, carcass yields and grades under various conditions are available at the office for those who are interest ed. . There may be a number of reasons for this hewever, my guess is that there are two that are most Important; one is the rock bottom cheap price of grass and legume seed; the other Is the excellent soil moisture con ditions we have now. Some of the seedings will amount to several hundred acres. Some will be put in the Soil Bank, 'other seedings will be used for pasture. If you nave been considering doing some of this seeding, better re consider now while grass and le gume seed prices are low and soil moisture conditions are as good as they can ever be.
