Feeder steers on high protein rations this winter gained 10 to 15 percent faster when pellets were implanted under the skin on the back side of the ear as compared with addition of stil bestrol to the grain ration. Both methods are used by ranchers, Tests were conducted with Hereford steers at OSC's Mai- heur branch experiment station near Ontario during the 126-day feeding period ending April 1. Neil Hoffman, station superin tendent, said advantages of im plants were lost when not accam panied by high protein rations. Highest gains 3.06 pounds per day were made by steers re ceiving a 30-milligram stilbestrol implant at the start of the feed ing program. The basic feed ra tion consists of free-choice alfal fa, about 11 pounds of ground ear w..., w.u ui.c-.iaii jjuuiiu ui wneai bran. Added protein was about nJ ... I 1 1 m 1 - I four pounds of ammoniated beet pulp, a new product measuring , - , 20 percent protein. Steers on the same ration, but with 10 milligrams stilbestrol daily mixed in the bran, averaged daily gains of 2.72 pounds. Cost per pound of gain from "fed" stilbestrol was 18.3 cents com pared to 16.4 cents with the stil bestrol Implant. The feeding trials further showed that ammoniated beet pulp produced beef gains at less cost than standard protein sup plement also rated 20 percent crude protein. Beet pulp can be treated for approximately $5 a ton, Hoffman reported, with total cost of the finished product about 20 percent less than the protein supplement consisting of regular beet pulp and cottonseed meal. Steers implanted with stilbes trol and receiving the protein supplement averaged daily gains of 3.03 pounds at a cost of 17.5 cents per pound of gain. Animals on "fed" stilbestrol and protein supplement gained 2.69 pounds a day at a cost of 19.3 cents per pound of gain. i New Night Highway Safety Program Congressman Kenneth A. Roberts, of Alabama, Chairman of the House Subcommittee oh Highway Safety, places the first of a new type reflectorized decal on the back of a truck to launch a nation-wide trucking industry night time safety program. Many truck operators will be putting similar safety decals on their trueks in advance of the summer Slow Down and Live Safety Campaign sponsored by the governors of the forty-eight states. The night safety project, headed by Goley D. Sontheimer, (right), director of safety of the Ameri can Trucking Associations, is the first of a three-part drive of the ATA in conjunction with the governors' program to cut down highway accidents during the summer months. Importance of high protein rations for effective use of stil bestrol implants was pinpointed when regular beet pulp was used with the basic ration of alfalfa, corn and bran. Gains dropped to 2.73 pounds a day for animals receiving stilbestrol implants but went up to 2.83 pounds for steer on "fed" stilbestrol. Tests were conducted with 50 high-quality yearling Hereford steers from OSC's Squaw Butte Harney branch experiment sta tion' Burns- The steers averaged about 810 Punds ,at the start of the feeding period. Average weight on April 1 ranged from 1153 pounds for the group on "fed" stilbestrol and protein supplement up to 1190 pounds for those receiving stilbestrol im plants and ammoniated beet' pulp. Finished live grades for all ani mals ranged from "high good' to "choice" with the fastest gain ing group consisting of two "high goods" and six "choice" or "low choice" animals. Early Marketing Of Lambs Pays; Pointers Listed Oregon sheepmen slated to market more than a half million fat lambs this spring and sum mer, mostly to out-of-state con sumers, could net an extra $3 a head from lambs finished off be. fore mid-June, say Oregon State college extension specialists. W. Y. Fowler, livestock market. Ing specialist, says lamb prices are expected to hold strong, fol lowing the pace set by beef. Best prices will go to the early spring lambs, he adds, that fill the mar ket gap between California's peak April sales and late June mar ketings elsewhere. The old rule of the thumb that a 75-pound lamb on Memorial Day may be worth more than a 90-pound lamb on July 4 still holds, the specialist says. Sharp price drops normally hit here about June 15. Fowler and John Landers, OSC livestock specialist, offer the fol lowing suggestions for boosting lambs to early markets: Shear ewes early to keep them pasturing well and producing milk rather than "holding-up" In the shade to escape warm wea- ther. See county extension . .mi.' agema iui ieiiijiei it-commen dations to keep pasture produc- ing at maximum Give lambs to pounds of grain daily, right up to loading time. Any locally-grown grain, alone or in mixture, will do. Keep plenty of fresh water and salt available. Drench lambs immediately if they show symptoms of internal parasites scours, inability to gain, and deadllooking wool. Drench with one ounce of com mercial liquid phenothiazine. Re. peat in two weeks. Keep a nine-to-one salt and phenothiazine mixture before the flock at all times. When lambs reach 80 pounds and grade 'choice", get them to market rather than waiting for the entire lamb crop to ripen. Over-ripe lambs not only go down in grade and value but re quire extra feed and care in the process. Neighbors can often pool transportation for small lots of market-ready lambs. Keep earliest, heavy ewe lambs at home for flock replacements, The specilists also advise grow ers with old-crop lambs to move them to market within the next two weeks to avoid price loss in competition with the 1957 crop. IONE NEWS The Ione extension unit met May 9 at the home of Mrs. Os car Peterson with Mrs. Bryce Keene and Mrs. Edward Baker co-hostesses. The topic was "Car ried Lunches." The new officers were installed. They are Mrs. James Pettyjohn, president; Mrs. Elmer Holtz, vice president; Mrs. Edward Baker, secretary-treasur-er. Mrs. Jim Pettyjohn was elect ed as delegate to the state coun- cil in June. Mrs. Robert Peterson received the door prize. o . WRITE A WANT AD CASH IN ON STUFF IN frir THE ATTIC it.
