Turner, Attorney. 8-12c Two Range Grasses Look Good in Test At Branch Station Two range grasses that looked good in experimental trials may be useful on Eastern Oregon range lands, according to a re port from the Squaw Butte-Har ney branch of the Oregon State college agricultural experiment station. Scott Cooper, agronomist, re ports that in 1953 to 1956 yield trials, Siberian wheatgrass out- yielded the standard crested wheatgrass in all four years And big bluegrass topped both wheat grasses in yield the last three years. The big bluegrass was slower to get started, Cooper explained, but was a consistent high yielder once established. It starts growth much earlier in the serine than crested wheatgrass but is easily! pulled up by livestock a charac. ' teristic that will probably have to be corrected by plant breeders. Yields in the trials were fig ured as pounds of air-dry matter, about the some as field-cured hay. Rainfall during the experiment averaged a little over 11 inches a year. Cooper also found that tall wheatgrass was a higher yielder during wet years, but fell down on yields during dry seasons. In contrast, hard fescue ranked higher during drier years than in wetter years. Twelve grasses were tested in the trials. 4000 Soil Samples From Oregon Farms Tested by OSC Lab More than 4,000 soil samples from Oregon farms were tested during the past year by the Ore gon State college soil testing laboratory as cost-conscious far mers tried to boost returns from each dollar spent for fertilizers and lime. The testing service, started in 1953, provides a standard $2.50 soil test that shows potash and phosphorus needs, degree of acid in western Oregon soils, and an alkali test for eastern Oregon. An analysis for magnesium require bents was recently added to the western Oregon test. An instruction leaflet. "How To Take A Soil Sample And Why," prepared by soil conservation specialists T. L. Jackson and Arthur King is available from county extension offices or the OSC bulletin clerk. County agents can also explain special tests available and ACP cost sharing programs for liming soils. Larry Alban, soils scoentist in charge of the laboratory, says 75 percent of soils tested to date are from the Willamette Valley. Add liquid to flour mixture, stirring only until flour is em Willamette Valley soils showed indications that magne sium applications may boost yields of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. High School Driver Training Aided Under New Measure A bill providing state aid for high school driver education courses was signed into law Wed nesday morning by Governor Robert D. Holmes. In signing the bill, Governor Holmes said he believes increased driver education for all age groups is important to improve the state's accident prevention program. "State-aided high school driver education," he said, "is a very significant step forward in the state's long-range program to re duce accidents." The Governor pointed out that studies have shown that young drivers who have received both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction maintain better driv ing records than do untrained drivers. This fact is reflected by reduced insurance rates offered by many companies to parents whose teen-age children have had driver training. State school superintendent Rex Putnam, superintendent of public instruction and a member of the state traffic safety commission; Marshall Dana, executive secre tary of the Oregon Highway Lifesavers; Father Kevin Murphy, representing parochial schools; Charles Snell, president of the Oregon State Motor Association; Senator Jean Lewis and Repre sentative Norman Howard. Under provisions of the bill, money to partially defray school expenses in conducting courses will come from an additional $1 fee for each driver and chauf feur license issued in the state. Collection of the additional $1 will begin sometime late this summer and all drivers will re ceive reminders notifying them of the increased cost by the De partment of Motor Vehicles, ac cording to James F. Johnson, di rector. Motorists will pay $2.50 when their licenses are isssued or re newed, Johnson said, but only $1.00 of this amount represents the cost of the license Itself. Fifty cents goes to a fund for medical and hospital expenses of indigent traffic accident victims and the other dollar to the De partment of Education which will administer the driver training program. Licenses are good for two yeais. The death rate for the month was 5.3 deaths per 100,000,000 miles traveled. This was nearly two full points below the Decem ber rate and compares with an 8.1 death rate scored in Novem ber. The Commission said the death rate is based on the number of people killed in each 100,000,000 miles of travel, Mileage during the month totalled 504,087,978.
