-Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April 18, 1957 lone Clubs Meet During Past Week By Echo Palmateer Mrs. Roland Bergstrom gave a report on the book Africa World of New Men, by John Joseph Consedine at the Topic club meeting at the home of Mrs. Charles Carlson Friday af ternoon April 22. The roll call was answered by naming a negro who made notable contri butions to American culture. At the business meeting conducted by Mrs. William Rawlins, presi dent, Mrs. Verner Troedson, Mrs. Norman Nelson and Mrs. Mary Swanson were named on the pro gram committee for next year. The meeting will be held at the Carlson home April 27. Refreshments were served by Mrs.Carlson, Mrs. Bergstrom and Mrs. Arvilla Swanson. Mrs. Walter Dobyns is visiting her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tad Hardesty in Eu gene. The Garden club met at the home of Mrs. Echo Palmateer Tuesday April 9 with Mrs. Ernest Heliker as co-hostes. Mrs. Edith Nichoson gave a reading on birds and what to plant to attract them. The roll call was answered by naming a nesting bird. At the business meeting, conducted by Mrs. O. L. Lundell, it was de cided to hold a plant sale in May. Fred Ely donated three benches to the city park. These are being painted and will be placed in the park soon. Mrs. Nichoson received the door prize. Y. the Noel Dobyns home Wednes day April 10, Mrs. Berl Akers, president, appointed her commit, tees for the Easter breakfast and for the Mother-Daughter tea to be held May 5 at the Community church. The club is gathering used clothing to be sent to some organization. Refreshments were served after the meeting by Mrs. Dobyns and Mrs. Grace Ware. Mrs.' Omar Rietmann received the door prize. Mrs. Kathryn Yarnell and son, Alton, visited her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Yarnell in Madras over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin McCabe of La Grande spent the weekend here. Dennis Swanson of Portland University and Jean Ann Swan son of Marylhurst college spent the weekend with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland Swanson. Mrs. Corliss McLeod spent last week in Ridgefield, Wash, and in The Dalles with relatives and friends. Kerry Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Peterson, underwent a tonsillectomy in the Pioneer memorial hospital last week. Mrs. E. M. Baker attended a 4-H conference in Portland last week. Mrs. Wate Crawford, who has been visiting in Portland returned home with her. Paul Barnett, who is employeB in the Standard Station in Pen dleton, spent a couple of days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barnett. Walter Bergstrom, student at Chico State college in Chico, Calif., is spending his vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bergstrom. He was accom panied by Walter Sherman. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Marcum of Portland spent the weekend with their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Bergstrom. They brought their granddaughter, Shauna Bergstrom home with them. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Lester Croft, also of Portland. Mrs. Leo Crabtree took her mother, Mrs. Blanche Scheelar, back to her home in Salem last week and brought her mother-in-law, Mrs. Hattie Crabtree back with her. Guest over the weekend at the Arthur Keene home were Mr. and Mrs. George Blum of Tillamook and Mrs. Marion Krake of Day ton. Mrs. Blum is a niece of of Mr. Keene. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Tucker and two sons of Salem spent Sunday with his brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Tucker. Mrs. Ida Coleman was honored with a birthday dinner at her home Sunday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Emert and daughter Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ekstrom and Ann Belle Coleman. Mrs. Rodney Crawford Jr. of Portland spent last week with her mother, Mrs. Ida Coleman. Mr. and Mrs. Paul O'Meara and Mrs. Leo Crabtree made a trip to The Dalles one day last week. Miss Gloria Christopherson of Rock Creek was a visitor at the John Botts home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Keene en tertained at a family dinner Fri day evening of last week. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. L. A. McCabe and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Keene and family and Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Pettyjohn and family. Mr. and Mrs. James Botts have moved into the George Ely house on Second street. Berl Akers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bed Akers and a junior in the lone high school, has been chosen as a delegate to Beaver Boys State by the American Legion to be held in Salem in June. Berl has been lettered in baseball, football, basketball and track. The I F Y E benefit party at the Legion hall Saturday evening was a great success. The party was sponsored by the 4-H groups with Mardine Baker as the chair man from this community. Games were played, and dancing was enjoyed. Mrs. Ruby Nichols went to Portland last week and brought her son, Lyle Kincaid home with her. He has been attending the Blind school there. The services will be in charge of the young people. Breakfast will follow in the Community church basement in charee of the Maranathas. A! free will offering for the break fast. At the Community church the childrens program will be given at 10 a. m. and the morning worship at 11 a. m. At St. Williams Catholic church Stations of the Cross at 8 p. m. Friday evening; Mass at 8 a. m. Sunday and Holy week ser vices in Heppner Thursday, Fri day, Saturday and Sunday. Mid night Mass Saturday in Heppner At the Nazarene church A children's program at 10 a. m. and morning worship at 11 a. m. April 26 Three Links club at the home of Mrs. Cecil Thome in the afternoon. April 27 Topic club meeting at the home of Mrs. Charles Carl son at 2:15 p. m. A pink and blue shower was given in honor of Mrs. Robert De Spain Friday evening April 22 at the Legion hall. Mrs. David Ras kin of Pilot Rock and Mrs. Roy Lieuallen assisted with the gifts. The hostesses were Mrs. Corliss McLeod, Mrs. David McLeod, Mrs. Walter Corley, Mrs. Ernest McCabe, Mrs. Pete Cannon, Mrs, C. E. Brenner, Mrs. John Eubanks, Mrs. Ray Boyce Mrs. Gordon White and Mrs. Delmer Crawford. Mrs. Omar Rietmann is a pa tient in Pioneer Memorial hos pital. Mrs. A. E. Stefani returned home from Pioneer Memorial hospital last week where she was a patient. Mrs. Robert Miller and her mother, Mrs. D. S. Rice of Con don were visitors here Friday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. David Raskin and children of Pilot Rock spent Fri day evening here. Grant Rigby took his son, Grant Jr. and Kenny Lynn Smou&e to Corvallis over the weekend where Grant Jr. entered an exhibit in the state science show there on Saturday. He received a silver star, which is a second rating on his repulsion coil. Mr. Rigby stated that it was a very inter esting show and hoped that more would attend next year. Grant Jr. also, entered his exhibit in the science show In Pendleton last week and received a superior rating. Weekend guests at the C. E. Brenner residence were Charlotte and Janice Garrett of Portland.
