Colleges in the 10 western states, including Oregon State college, are conducting a five year study on the effects of diet and enviroment on certain fatty substances that sometimes col lect on artery walls and restrict the flow of blood. Effects of vitamins, fats, age, altitude, climate and other factors on these fatty substances will be studied by project cooperators. At OSC, studies will concen trate on the roles that certain vitamins may play in the body's use of these fatty substances, known as cholesterol. In a part of the study already completed, four women were placed on iden. tical diets for 30 days to learn how individual differences can cause day-to-day changes in the amount of cholesterol found in the blood. Ann Stirnlman, OSC foods and nutrition graduate, 'completed the study under di- rection of Betty Hawthorne, pro ject leader. Results of OSC and regional studies will be pooled at the end of five years. Scientists want to I learn why cholesterol from the diet is assimilated more by some 'people than others and what causes some persons to manufac ture much more of it than others.
