Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday, January 17, 1957 Page 7 4-H Club Leaders Banquet Held Thursday at lone By Echo PaLmateer The 2nd annual Morrow County 4-H Leaders banquet was held at the Community church parlor Thursday evening Jan. 10. The following program was given: Harold Beach was toast master, the U. S. pledge led by Janet Wright, the 4-H pledge by Karl Beach, invocation by Rev. Lloyd Knight, welcome by J. R. Huff man, manager of Pacific Power and Light Co., response by Mar dine Baker of the Junior Leaders club, a musical number by Janice Martin and Carol Anderson, a talk by Cecil Root of the Pacific Power and Light C6., an accor dion solo by Barbara Gantebein, a presentation of awards by N. C. Anderson and Miss Beverly brad shaw, and slides and a talk by Patsy Wright on "My Trip to Na tional 4-H Camp Club". Leaders from this community receiving awards were Mrs. L. A. McCabe, a 12 year award, Mrs. E. M. Baker a 7 year award. Alfred Nelson a 2 year award and Mrs. Louis Carl son a 5 year pin. The junior lead ers, Mardine Baker and Judy Howton each received a 2 year award. Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom, who was absent, received a 1 year pin. The banquet was sponsored and served by the Maranatha club and made possible by the Pacific Power and Light Co. Around 2 inches of snow fell here Sunday afternoon and even ing. Miss Ruby Ann Rietmann re turned to Pendleton to resume her work as teacher In the schools there. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dobyns returned home last week from Eugene where they visited their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tad Hardesty. A stork shower was given in honor of Mrs. Rex Melena Wed nesday afternoon Jan. 9 at the C. E. Brenner home. Mrs. Richard Rea assisted with the gifts. Games were played and those receiving prizes were Mrs. Noel Dobyns, Mrs. Delbert Emert and Mrs. Ida Coleman. The hostesses were Mrs. Phil Emert, Mrs. James Barnett, Mrs. Herman Blettell, Mrs. Vester Hams, Mrs. Herbert Ekstrom and Mrs. Brenner. A Morrow County Farm bureau membership kickoff breakfast was served at the Donald Heliker home Monday morning. Other members present were Harold Beach, president of the Morrow County Farm ffureau; Gene Cuts forth, Gene Majeske, Ervin Rauch, 0. W. Cutsforth, Jack Barak, Herman Blettell, David Baker, Robert Jepsen, Arthur Crawford, John Wightman, Bill Barratt, Leonard Rill and Nels Anderson and Mr. Heliker. Mr. Anderson was the main speaker. Mrs. Arthur Crawford and Mrs. Herman Blettell assisted Mrs. Heliker with the breakfast. Donald Heliker and Herman Blettell attended Farm Bureau meeting in Bend Jan. 7. They made the trip in a chartered bus with over thirty others from this part of the state. Coffees Held A kickoff coffee hour was held at the home of Mrs. Milton Mor gan Monday morning for March of Dimes. Co-hostesses were Mrs. Garland Swanson and Mrs. Earl McCabe. The following women will have coffee hours for their groups: Mrs. Franklin Lindstrom, North lone; Mrs. Harold Dobyns, and Mrs. Marlon Palmer, Rhea Creek; Mrs. James Lindsay, Wil low Creek; Mrs. John Eubanks, West lone; Mrs. Lloyd Howton, South lone; Mrs. William Berg strom, Gooseberry; and for the town, Mrs. Roy Lindstrom, Mrs. Delmer Crawford, Mrs. R. H. Woodroof, Mrs. Fredrick Martin and Mrs. Noel Dobyns. Dates to remember: Jan. 18 H. E. C. of Willows grange at the home of Mrs. Mabel Cotter with potluck dinner at noon. Members will bring des serts and salads. Jan. 19 Basketball game here with Irrigon. Jan. 20 Willows grange meet ing in the afternoon with a pot luck dinner at noon. Jan. 25 Three Links club meet ing at the home of Mrs. Adon Hamlett. Jan. 27 Grange county confer ence meeting at the grange hall in the afternoon. Lyle Kincaid who has been going to the blind school In Salem finished his school and is staying with his mother, Mrs. Ruby Nichols. Mrs. Milton Morgan gave a benefit coffee party Tuesday afternoon Jan. 8 for the public library. Others present were Mrs. E. W. Bristow, Mrs. Raymond Lundell, Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn, Mrs. Lloyd Rice, Mrs. Earl Mc Cabe and Mrs. Ray Heimbigner. Patients from here in the Pio ner Memorial hospital are Mrs. Carl Bergstrom and Mrs. O. L. Lundell. Mrs. Ernest Heliker was a patient in the hospital at Hepp ner a couple of days last week following minor surgery. Lois Ring, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ring, underwent a tonsillectomy last week in the Heppner hospital. Mrs. Monetta Aldrich and Mrs. Charles O'Connor have been ill at their homes the past week. Victor Rietmann returned home from the Pioneer Memorial hos pital last week. Girl Burned Jackie Howton, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Howton, re. ceived second degree burns on her ear, hand and leg Saturday while playing at her home. Her brother Jimmy, poured gasoline on a fire in the yard that he thought was out and the flames caught her clothing on fire. He quickly extinguished the flames before much damage was done. She was taken to a physician In Heppner where the burns were treated. The men had charge of the pro gram at the P-TA meeting at the school cafetorlum Wednesday evening Jan. 9. It consisted of a pantomime "A Dress Rehearsal", by Bill Salter, Don Brostrum, Gary Stephenson, Loy Keene and Judy Howton; Sidney Zinter played a couple of numbers on his ukulele, Joe Hausler played on his zither and also imitated Elvis Presley, the Hungry Five played several polkas on Instruments. Lloyd Howton was chairman of the pro gram. Refreshments were served by Ernest and Earl McCabe, Phil Emert, Raymond Lundell, Berl Akers, A. A. Stefani, Leo Crab- tree, and Earl McKinney. Mrs. Charles Ruggles .showed slides and gave a talk on wild flowers in Morrow county at the Garden club meeting at the home of Mrs. Ernest Heliker on Tuesday evening Jan. 8. At the business meeting, conducted by Mrs. O. L. Lundell, the roll call was answered by naming a garden resolution for the year. Several dried arrange ments were brought by the mem bers. Mrs. Etta Huston received the door prize. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Dale Ray, Mrs. Echo Palmateer and Mrs. Heliker. The Valby Lutheran Bible class was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carlson Tuesday evening Jan. 8 with 32 present. Rev. Zier of Heppner conducts these classes which are held each week. A bridal shower was given In honor of Mrs. Alvin McCabe in the Community church parlor on Saturday afternoon Jan. 12. Mrs. Jimmy Pettyjohn and Grace Mc Cabe assisted with the gifts. For the program, Arleta McCabe gave a piano solo, Whispering Hope; Linda Halvorsen sang, Whatever Will Be Will Be, accompanied by Karen Lundell; Karen and Cher yle Lundell played a piano duet. Refreshments were served from a table with a centerpiece of white carnations and candles. Mrs. Leo Crabtree and Mrs. L. A. McCabe poured. The hostesses were Mrs. Archie Munkers, Mrs. Lewis Hal vorsen, Mrs. Earl McCabe, Mrs. Raymond Lundell and Mrs. Bryce Keene. Mrs. Hattle Crabtree and Mrs. Blanche Scheelar of Salem, grandmothers of the bride, at tended the shower. Mrs. Ernest McCabe gave a birthday party Wednesday after- non Jan. 9 in honor of her son, John, who was 5 years old. Other persons present were Ronnie Pal mateer, Anita and Cynthia Craw ford, Terry and Cathy Cannon, Greg Jacobs, Bill McLeod, John Hall, Susan Jane Jepsen and Lisa McCabe. Mrs. Wate Crawford Is visiting relatives In Portland. Rev. and Mrs. Charles Wilkes and sons were called to Seattle recently on account of the death of her father, W. Beech. Funeral services were held at Kirkland, Wash., Jan. 8. Rev. Wilkes re turned home Wednesday of last week but Mrs. Wilkes and sons remained there for a while. Mr. and Mrs. Heinz Pruss and children were recent visitors at the Ralph Crum home. He is teaching in the Junior College in Wenatchee, Wash., and wag a former teacher here.
