Heppner Gazette Times, TKurs'day, November 1, 1956 Page 2 Ground Observer Corps Operating At Boardman By Mary Lee Marlow The Ground Observer Corps is now working here, and had an other training meeting Friday night. Civilians are taking the 8 a. m. to 4 p. m. watch, and per sonnel of the bombing range take the watch from 4 p. m. till 8 a. m. More civilians are needed to sign up for the corps. .19 of an inch of rain fell here Monday night. Maximum tem perature Monday was 52, mini mum for 44 Tuesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hamilton announce the engagement of their daughter, Carol Ann, to Larry Everett Thorpe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Thorpe, all of Boardman. The wedding will be an event of Nov. 30, at 8 p. m. at the Boardman Community church. A board meeting of the 4fh Dis trict of the Oregon Federation of Women's clubs was held one day last week at the Saddle Room of the Hitchin' Post cafe. There were 31 ladies present from Moro, Pen dleton, Milton-Freewater, Hermis ton, Arlington, Wasco, and Board- man. Mrs. Harry Pinkerton, dis trict president, presided at the meeting. Special guests were Mrs. Marion Weatherford, Arling ton, and Mrs. Hildred Zell, of Wasco, of the general Federation board, and Mrs. George Shane, Arlington, of the state board. Plans were made for the next two years for clubs in the dis trict. The Tillleum club met Tuesday of last week at the home of Mrs. Gunnar Skoubo, with 11 members present. Guests were Mrs. Delmer Hug and Mrs. Charles Higuera. Final plans were made for the annual Hallowe'en party for the school children to be held at the school house Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p. m. The children will be In costume, and following the party will be taken in cars to "Trick or Treat" for pennies for children of the world, UNICEF. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Oveson, Wallowa, visited at the home of Oveson's brother-in-law and sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Black, Thursday on their way to Port land. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Nelson took their son Norman to a Port land hospital last Thursday for further treatmimt. He has been in the Good Shepherd hospital In Hermiston for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Davidson, Wenatchee, Wash., were overnight visitors at the home of Mrs. Davidson's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely, Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Ronald Black, treasurer of the North Morrow county fair board, announced that fair checks are now ready for distribution. Marie Potts, student at E. O. C. E., La Grande, spent the week en at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Potts. Mrs. William Garner and Mrs. Dewey West attended a project leaders' meeting at Pine City on Wednesday of last week for the county extension meeting for No vember. Subject Is "Oregon sweets." Friday Mrs. Garner also attended a meeting at Pine City for leaders of the shirt sewing class. First meeting of the class was held here at the grange hall Monday, and others will be Wed nesday and Friday of this week. 2nd Lt. and Mrs. Emsley Rog ers arrived at the home of Rogers' parents. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Rogers ' went to St. Helens this week to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Wright. Rogers was recently transferred to Offutt Air force Base at Omaha, Nebr. . Mrs. Blanche Garner, Bend, visited at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Garner, from Thurs day till Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Newell Vaught and daughter Gail, Richland, Wash., visited at the home of Mrs. Vaught's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely Sunday. There will be a community meeting at the grange hall Thurs day. Nov. 8. to nominate a can didate to serve on the cemetery board. The annual school carnival will be held in the old gymnasium Friday. Nov. 9. Bill Thorpe, sen- or. is carnival chairman, and Barbara Ganlenbein is chairman of tickets. Princesses and escorts are Su san Tartlow and Kurt Gantenbein, Lorelei Hamilton and Nelson C'ruthers, Donna Watts and Gary Moore, and Connie Baker and Jerry reck. One of the princesses will be elected queen. The P. T. A. is sponsoring a talent show to be held Nov. 16 In the school gymnasium at 8 p. m. Those wishing to take part In the show should contact Mrs. Freda Thayer, give the name of their selection and the division the contestant is in. There will be three divisions: Grade school, high school, ana adults. Follow ing the show the seniors will give a ciance.
