Others pre sent were Mrs. Elmer Newton (Continued on Page Four) Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, June 28, 1956 Rebekah President Visits lone Lodge By Echo Palmateer Bunchgrass Rebekah lodge held a special meeting at their . hall Wednesday evening June 20 wnen Mrs. Ethel Gibbs of Ocean Lake, president of the Rebekah Assembly paid her official visit. She was accompanied by Mrs. Burness Thompson of Newport, conductor of the Assembly. Mrs, Lola Osburn of Portland, past president of the Assembly. Mrs Claude White and Mrs. Kenneth Batty of Hardman and Mrs. Ted McMillan and Mrs. Alex Hunt of Lexington were also, visitors. Mrs. Gibbs gave a very interesting talk at the meeting and was pre sented with a gift from the lodge. The presentation was made by Mrs. Wallace Matthews who read a poem composed by Mrs. Gordon White, and Mrs. Paul Pettyjohn sang a song of which she com posed the words. The hall was decorated with spring flowers. Mrs. Gibbs also showed slides of the I. O. 0. F. home in Portland. After the meeting refreshments were served from a table deco rated with pink roses and pink and green candles. Mrs. Gibbs conducted a school of instruction at the hall in the afternoon. This was followed by a pot luck buffet supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Morgan. They were assisted by Mrs. David Rietmann and daugh ter, Julie and Mildred Bristow. Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Thompson were the guests of Mr and Mrs. Wate Crawford while here and Mrs. Osburn the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Claude White near Hardman. Garden Club Meets The Garden club met at the home of Mrs. Fredrick Martin Tuesday June 19 with a potluck dinner at noon. In the morning members went on a tour visiting the following yards and gardens: Phil Emert, Cecil Thome, W. E. Melena, G. Lun jdell and Fredrick Martin. At the meeting in the afternoon, the following new officers took charge, Mrs. Monetta Aldrich, president; Mrs. 0. L. Lundell, vice president; Mrs. Phil Emert, secretary and Mrs. Edith Nicho son, treasurer. Mrs. William Raw lins, past president, presented the out going officers with gifts. It was decided to place a garbage can in front of the Hatfield store on Main street for trash. Mrs. Aldrich named the following heads of committees to assist her during the year: program and year book, Mrs. William Raw lins; ways and means, Mrs. Phil Emert; publicity, Mrs. Echo Pal mateer; park, Mrs. Fredrick Mar tin; historian and scrap book, Mrs. Sam Esteb; junior gardeners, Mrs. Rawlins; photography, Mrs. Leonard Carlson; corsages and arrangements, Mrs. Edith Nicho son; membership, Mrs. Carlson; civic improvement, Mrs. Omar Rietmann; flower show, Mrs. Rawlins; nominating, Mrs. Kath ryn Yarnell; magazines, Mrs. Walter Dobyns. Mrs. Edith Nichoson and Mrs. Etta Huston gave a very inter esting reports on the State con vention at Ontario. The high lights of which were a Basque and Japanese banquet and en tertainment. The lone Garden club display at the convention was a little park, one side clean and the other littered. Over 400 registered at the convention. Miss Alma Rohrman was elected president of the Blue Mountain district. Bus drivers and their routes for the coming year are: North lone, Larl McCabe; BasPhne, C. E. Bids for the Dry Fork route will be given July 11. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Everson and two children of Colfax, Wash., are visiting at the Melvin Melena home this week. ..... Mr. and Mrs. Raiph Crum and family were recent visitors in The Dalles where they, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Strahm. Jack and Bonnie Crum remained in The Dalles for a longer visit. John Mason of Portland was a visitor here over the weekend. Private and Mrs. Ray Turner and son, Michael, were Pendleton visitors last week. Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Wade and twin daughters, Katherine and Kathleen of Walla Walla spent Sunday with his niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. David Riet mann. The girls remained here for a longer visit. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Emert of Walla Walla were visitors last week at the home of her mother Mrs. Mary Emert. Judy Mason and Richard Rea attended the wedding of Miss Dolores Buhman and Vester Jones in Burns Sunday June 24. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Buhman of Burns and a cousin of Judy and Alyce Mason. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Roach and son, Gerald, of Portland were guests at the Lewis Halvorsen home this week. A two mill levy ($6,943.96) to be used for black topping the playground and re arranging the classrooms. Miss Maryan Lee Foley of Port land and Lt. Lawrence Jerome McElligott were married at St. Peter's Catholic church in The Dalles Saturday June 23. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Foley of The Dalles and the groom is the son of Mrs. Charles McElligott of Portland and a brother of Richard and Donald McElligott of lone. Billy Lundell of Milwaukie visited relatives here over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of Baker visited her mother, Mrs. Olive Engleman and other rela tives here Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Hershal Town send gave a birthday dinner at their home Thursday June 21 in honor of her mother, Mrs. Ella Bleakman of Heppner. Others present were Mrs. Townsend's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Irby of Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirkelie of Tacoma are the parents of a daughter, Dixie Lee, born June 20. Annette Churchill of Elgin spent last week with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Botts. Strawberry Feed Held Members of the Masonic lodge attended the Community church in a body Sunday June 24. Spe cial music was given by Mrs. Kenneth Smouse on the violin accompanied by Mrs. E. M. Baker. After the church services the Masons and their families at tended the annual strawberry feed and pot luck dinner at their hall. Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mason, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mc Millan, Bert Johnson and MTss Olga Johnson all of Portland. Around 80 attended. Mrs. Ella Caples of Portland is visiting her sisters. Mrs. Clara Kincaid and Mrs. Mabel Cotter. The Altar society of St. Wil liams church met at the church Thursday evening June 21. After the business meeting refresh ments were served by Mrs. Den ward Bergevin. The Arnica club met at the Noel Dobyns home Wednesday June 20 with Mrs. Robert Jepsen and Mrs. Marion Palmer as hos tesses.
