SYLVIA McDANIEL 51tfc FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER I hereby announce that I am a LEXINGTON CHURCH Ways of Improving Child's Spelling Given for Parents OREGON STATE COLLEGE Parents can help their children spell better by putting correct spelling in the home on the same basis as proper table manners. Mrs. Faith G. Norris, assistant professor of English at Oregon State college, says parents could go a long way toward improving a child's spelling by encouraging them to realize its importance. Help your children become aware of words, advises Mrs. Norris, and when they mispell a word show them the right way. Mrs. Norris, who has taught two spelling clinics at OSC for students who wanted to improve their spelling, found that many college men and women can't spell many of the words they learned in their early school days. However, they have little trouble with the more difficult words learned later. The OSC professor suggests several do's and don'ts for help ing children. First, she says, the parent should consult the teacher to find how they can best help their child. Mrs. Norris suggests making up games to aid children in learning to spell. Make it fun. You can keep the children out of mischief and improve their spel ling by making up spelling games while on long automobile trips, she advises parents. Don't nag or fuss if the child mispells a word, she cautions. Some children rebel if the parent tries to force them into spelling and they adopt the attitude of purposely not spelling correctly. Do help the child to pronounce correctly. Mrs. Norris says that much poor spelling comes from a sloppy habit of pronunciation. For instance, she finds that many students pronounce convenience and con-vi-ence, and they spell it the latter way. Athlete is often spelled athe-lete because it is pronounced with an extra "e".
