CIGARETTE TAX HELD UP The expected referral of the 1955 Legislature's 3-cent-a-pack tax on cigarrettes was subjected to the referendum, filed last Tues day. If the petitions filed against the law are found to be in order, the question of having such a tax will be voted on at the No vember election, 1956. Burlingham Seed Company, who have developed Nomad Alfalfa, will also make a seeding at their Umatilla river ranch. There are small lots of seed available for any Morrow county rancher who might be interested. While in Canada, Mr. Jackman had the opportunity to observe a new kind of brome grass from Korea which is growing at one of the experiment stations there. The brome is much finer leaved than smooth brome, more of a bunch tvne. recovering far more rapidly after cutting or grazing and makes two crops of hay in stead of one. It does not go out under Brazing such as our smooth brome does here in our irrigated pastures. The new brome has a heavy basal growth of leaves like orchard grass or alta fescue. Paul L. Patter son last Friday, It is the first time a governor has commuted a death sentence since the 1937 legislature substi tuted the gas chamber for hang ing. Imlah, now 19, will be eligible to parol when he is 26. GERLINGER FOREST Dedication ceremonies for the George T. Gerlinger State Experi mental Forest at Black Rock, Ore gon has been set for August 25. George T. Gerlinger, lumber man and conservationist has been called the father of Oregon's state forestry program and the designer and developer of the tree farm plans. The 1000-acre forest of 40 year old Douglas fir is a memorial to Gerlinger who for 30 years was a member of the Oregon State Board of Forestry an unequaled span of service for the forestry department. He also served as president of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association. FIREMEN ON SMOKING Changes made by the 1955 Le gislature on no-smoking restric tions prompted Salem fire depart ment officials last Friday to talk to the girls at Hillcrest School of Oregon for socially maladjusted (adjudged delinquent) girls be tween the ages of 12 and 20. Starting next Friday the older girls of the school will be allowed to smoke, but only in their day rooms.
