S. Treasury ex plaining that rats had eaten them. Some were pieced together and she was reim bursed. Most of it was lost. Many people hide money in a receptacle and place it in the furnace. U. S. Treasury restorers can sometimes identify burned money, even when nearly reduced to ash but not always! There are lots of ways to lose money especially when you are traveling. You leave it in a hotel room, send it to a cleaner; it may fall from your pocket, be left on a restaurant table or lost on the many occasions when you handle cash. However, American Express Travelers Cheques can never be "lost." Full redemption is made because no one but you can spend them. CAPITAL PARADE Continued from Page 2 received when she drove her car off the pavement at the end of a city street, was reversed this week by the State Supreme Court, in an opinion by Justice Earl C. Latourette. The court held that while the absence of warnings or barricades at the end of the street consti tuted a defect in the street, the City of Portland was absolved from liability by the express lan guage of an exemption provision in the city charter. TAPE RECORDER O. K. Mechanical recorders can be used in the conduct of labor dis pute hearings to record testimony of witnesses, Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton held in an opinion this week. The opinion was requested by FredG. Scherer, State Labor Ex aminer. "In pomulgating a rule or regu lation describing the manner of recording testimony the labor examiner should be guided by those methods approved by the legislature in the conduct of court proceedings," Thornton averred. Thornton said during the re cent legislature a law was passed to permit the use of mechanical electrical or electronic devices in making audio records of testi mony when the same is used in connection with, and in addition to, the taking of testimony by shorthand notes or mechanical typing devices using paper tapes. TREASURER UNANDER HONORED The Legion of Honor, the high est in the gift of France, was re cently conferred upon Oregon's State Treasurer, Sig Unander, who returned from Paris this week. The award was in recog nition of Unander's contribution to France during World War II. Unander was a colonel in the army, serving in France, Italy and North Africa. In France and Italy the aver age workingman has improved his economical condition marked ly since the last war and the peo ple are now getting enough food which was scarce during the war. Rents are controlled by the gov ernment and are very low. Mrs. Unander accompanied the treasurer to Paris and on a conti nental trip including Italy, where food, they reported, is cheaper than in France. They left Paris Monday morning, continental time, and arrived in New York Tuesday morning. In New York, as Oregon's State Treasurer, he signed $700,000 worth of Oregon State Forestry bonds. They were turned over to the First National Bank of New York. TOUR OF STATE'S PARKS " A four-day 1,206-mile inspec tion trip of Oregon's highways and state parks will be made by the Oregon State Highway Commission next week, begin ning July 11, The commission, accompanied by representatives of the press, highway interim committee, parks advisory committee, state parks superintendent and rep resentatives of the Bureau of Public Roads, U. S. Forest Service and Automobile Club, will leave Portland on U. S. Highway 30 in In Menominee, Wisconsin a farmer lost his billfold in the field. Two days later he was slaughtering a calf and discovered the lost bills in its stomach. He got full re demption from the Treasury. 0 In Atlanta, Georgia a recluse died with a will leaving $22,000 he had stored in a mason jar. They found the money but mold and damp had solidified it so it couldn't be pried apart. X-rays saved some; most was lost. specting state parks and the Col umbia River Highway enroute in the morning and New Emigrant Hill section on Route 30 and Emi grant Springs State Park in the afternoon with a planned over night stop at Wallowa Lake. While headed for Ontario, for overnight, the group will inspect Wallowa Lake State Park, and other parks and highways. New locations on U, S. 30 between Baker and Ontario will be in spected.
